If you don't read the article and are wondering about the odd percentage totals, the players had multiple votes in some categories. e.g., could name two imports in the most-exciting category.

You know it's a good set of returning players when Jawai (who monstered the league when he last played) is only rated by 19% of players in the best-returning list.

Hopefully they still asked about best defenders, trash talkers, etc. Always good content fodder for the league.

Not to mention AJ Ogilvy not even making it into the Top 5.

Was this conducted before Webster announced he's leaving? Just find it really surprising that NZ are that highly rated.
Cairns and Illawarra pretty underrated.

I'd say players understand better than anyone that how well a team functions is as important as the individual talent.

Think about New Zealand's championship run, at various times they've replaced Penney, Braswell, Wilkinson, Bruton and Boucher but kept on keeping on. Having said that, I would have them in the leading pack rather than clear favourites without Webster, even though he hasn't been a superstar for them yet.

Webster's gone (hasn't been replaced afaik), Pledger's injured, Abercrombie's injured, Jackson#2 looks like a clear downgrade on Ibekwe, the 3 direct rivals have improved, NZ didn't finish top in the minor rounds last year, just had a good finals series.
There's more than enough reasons to doubt NZ this year.

Webster is gone for sure yet.
Pledgers back in round 1.
Abercrombie is also expected back in round 1.
No one rated Ebekwe at the start of last season so why should anyone rate Charles Jackson?
Their rivals would want to have improved, NZ swept the finals.

Each year everyone gets their hopes up that NZ will fall from grace but Cedric Jackson & Mika Vukona will make sure they compete each game.

Is this a regular thing? If so who would be curious to know who was the players choice for champion last year and in fact the general track record. Would hazard a guess that they're wrong most of the time so no title for new Zealand this year
