Wildcats Game-Night Entertainment 2015/16

What did everyone think about the game-night entertainment in the first game? Here are some of my thoughts:

Live drums - a nice touch, using drummers to make the beat for the defence/other chants. Wherever "natural" noise/sound can be used over artificial, I'm in favour of that. Reminded me of a similar setup they have at Lakers games.

Music - was it just me or did it seem louder than normal? and too loud. Also there were a couple of 'dreary' tracks on the playlist that need to be eliminated. Basketball is known for its fast pace so lets keep the tunes to ones which have a clearly discernible beat and one that is medium to fast. A differentiation for bball as an entertainment product is its non-stop action. Don't put fans to sleep with poor music choices.

Starting 5 - They should take more of a NBA-type approach where they play the introductory "hype" video before announcing the Cats starters. Usually in the NBA this is accompanied by dimming of the lights but not sure if this is possible at Perth Arena. Liked how the players got involved in the starting 5 theatrics with choreographed handshakes/routines etc, the fans love this stuff. But the whole starting 5 thing is an opportunity to make it even more exciting for the fans and "celebritise" your team. Also the music was too loud whilst the starters were being announced so you could barely make out what the courtside announcer was saying. Which is a shame because I think he did a good job of hyping with the ol' "from "

Half-court shot: I noted the prize is only $1,000 - seems pretty cheap? Surely the NBL with their vehicle partner could do up a sponsorship deal to give away a car. The car sponsor would get several mentions during the game and could spread their risk over the whole schedule of all teams. If they wanted to minimise their financial commitment then make it more difficult for the contestant to win (e.g. the "Triple Shot" approach used last year by the Cats). If my memory serves me correctly, no one hit from half court last year so it is low probability.

Regarding the "Dunk" team and the cheerleaders, I would prefer a more professional outfit instead of what appears to be younger kids/adults, but I guess this is constrained by budget.

Liked the marching band and drums a lot.
The theatrics of Wilbur from the roof top (flying fox/bungee) was great also.
I thought the court side announcer was pretty awesome also, not quite a Lachy Reid but much better than previous years. Not sure if he was there last year.

The music was OK at time but still think it needs to be limited more and not as loud.

There was a Fiat 500 on offer for the half-court shot at Cairns last night.

Wasn't a fan of the marching band tbh, also who the fuck thought those P&N Bank fly swatter things were a good idea?? Of course people were going to hurl them around. Nearly sliced through one of sound guys' neck, and another clipped a security guard. I will say, the Wildcats focus too much on their game night sponsors. Too much P&N Bank shit, no one gives a shit about P&N Bank

The music and sound was way to quiet.

The problem is the Wildcats use the emergency PA system at Perth Arena. It was never intended for that PA system to be used for any gigs.

It's just too expensive to get a specialised sound rig up for every home game.

The DJ and music was the same it has been for the past 3 seasons. It was very quiet though.

The marching band has potential, so I'll give it time. Their tempo on the defence drums was too fast for the crowd at times. Also there was too much of them during the 2nd quarter.

The atmosphere felt extremely flat. The new Foxtel settings interfered with the wireless mics and mc and national anthem singer mics.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that everything announced via the PA system is inaudible. Where we sit we can't distinguish anything being said.

Wil ur was cool... Just get ready to see that same act 13 more times.

Dunk team looked like a gymnastics team throwing a ball through a hoop.

Marching band members lacked a bit of swag/charisma.

Traditionally the first home game of a season always has some bugs.

Ideally they'd get rid of the current DJs and hire us.

Taipans Fiat 500 prize for half court shot is due to Ireland's car dealership sponsorship.

Sixers have had Dave Cooper Honda for a while but nothing. we are fast becoming the weakest club

LOL RMQ keep being negative in the hope of becoming the DJ. Time to maybe give up a childhood dream how long have you been trying to get a gig with the Cats.

Haha. The fact remains we are the best Bball DJs in the country. I stand by that.

I've been involved with the club in the past in producing a number of items. It's not really a dream to do it. I honestly think we'd be better at it then anyone else, even with all the restrictions the club have in place.

Music production at games has been ordinary ever since DJ Paul Malone left.

Thanks to the annual fuck-up with out seats (seriously they need to sack the bozos running Perth Arena) I missed the pre-game and barely made the tip-off.
Was Wilbur the same deal, or is it different to previous years, cos it was getting a bit old.

Marching band? Meh.

The dunk team IS kids. It's ok to fill in the quarter time break, I wouldn't want to see adults doing it, (unless they were hot chicks in bikinis.)

The dancing is getting a bit old after all these years. I imagine its all new "routines" but its just starts to look the same after a while.

The half court shot, yeah lame.
It used to be you got a small prize for a free-throw, then something better for a 3-point, then something major for half-court.
Having half-court only is pointless. There's no buildup, and lets face it, how many randoms could hit a half-court shot? Most can't even make the distance, although the kid this time made a go of it.

Yes, the frisbees, not well thought out. And the Mascot for P&N bank (an ampersand) must be the dumbest I have every seen.

On the subject of the PA, one thing I don't understand is why they insist on doing a live interview with a player after every game. You can NEVER hear a word he says.

I thought the cheerleaders were underused, we're just sitting down during a lot of timeouts.

Music seemed worse, my girlfriend pointed out a few one direction songs.....you can't have that.

Looking at Twitter apparently most of the arena had really sticky floors, which was the same where I sat, not great.

I went to the first Lynx game and TBH that was a more entertaining night, entertainment wise and the fact both teams shot better than most nbl teams.

I liked that the music at the Cats wasn't too loud. To me it should be background music, not the focus of the game.
At the first Lynx home game it seemed they were trying to mimic a nightclub with the extreme volume, and I found it quite unpleasant. Must be annoying to the players having it that loud as well.

Agree that the music selection was better in the DJ Paul days. Everyone that has done it over the last 15 years has badly lacked variation though. I'm good with having regular songs for certain notable times in the game, but not virtually the same songs played every game. Surely it's not hard to have a rotation big enough so that a song only appears every 3 or 4 games.

As for Friday's game in particular, I find that the first home game of a season is always a bit flat. No one's fault - it just takes everyone a game to get back into full #RedArmy mode. I'm tipping that the crowd will be more into it next game.

RMQ give it up, you are NOT the best at it. Just keep trying to suck up to Nick Marvin more, that's how people get gigs at the Wildcats anyways.

If they had any morals they'd get Paul back, but they'd need to apologise a lot first after screwing him over massively. Remember he didn't leave, they fucked him over and stole his playlist when he had to miss a couple games.

Wonder how they can claim to lose a Million dollars yet get even more "performers" involved. Hmmmmm

Didn't know DJ Paul got screwed over. Interesting but not surprised.

There was another aspect of the game night entertainment where the business was never paid for their services to the club. Maybe that's how you survive running a club in the NBL, survival first, morald and paying bills second.

There's two sides to the Paul Malone story. I don't know which is true.

We are the best at it. We aren't perfect, but we are passtionate. the SBL gf was tough and a unique situation (two home teams) a sound technician isn't really needed to be honest.

At the end of the day I just want the product to be better - I'd much rather like to be able to sit in the stands and enjoy the spectacle without thinking "wtf are they thinking".

The wildcats powers that be have a style in mind that they want played. Any DJ can do it and any DJ is interchangeable u wouldn't and shouldn't notice the difference who is doing it.

The problem lies in what the powers that be are willing to let be aired. There's all sorts of politics going on. Some that I agree with and make sense and some that are just too wacky to even comprehend.

The problem isn't so much the individual DJs but more so the direction and freedom they are given.

The pre-game's been getting progressively worse ever since they started at the Arena, IMO.

Away team is introduced, lights go out, video plays, Wildcats are introduced, the national anthem plays, and then the lights come on. Alright so far. But then during warmups, the lights go out again, the cheerleaders come on and do a routine for no apparent reason, the lights go back on, and a band comes out and plays for a bit. Meanwhile, the warmups (try to) continue, completely ignoring what's going on at center court.

Then they drop the mascot from the ceiling, have announcements of the starting fives, then the warmup concludes, and the game commences.

It's just absurd. The cheerleader routine has no purpose. It used to be that they'd turn the lights out, do that, then introduce the starters. But if they're not doing that, they should just get rid of the whole thing. It just seems like they're doing things for the sake of doing things, the lights are going on and off all night, and I can't imagine the players are too happy with it.

And if we're in such financial trouble, do we really need fire coming out of the lighting rigs every time we hit a three? Okay, it'll only happen a handful of times a year with this team, but surely there's something better to spend that money on? Red decals in the out-of-bounds area come to mind.

Yeah I felt the atmosphere was pretty flat especially for a close game between great rivals and yet it was just 'eh'

Next game should be better but what have we got for our 11% extra expenses on our membership?

Would love heaps more changes and as for the band, it was noticeable that when they played that focus went to them and not on the game

I have never thought that gimmicks like hand clappers or toys of any kind are worth the money or effort, just not necessary.

I don't mind the idea of a T-Shirt for everyone though...

I thought the atmosphere was good when the game was close at the end. The lack of music volume helped in this regard

Depends. How much does fire cost these days?

One thing no one has mentioned (which might be telling) is the red morph suits guys. Time for them to go. They seem to be multiplying and all they do is run around the crowd annoying people. I want to punch one of them.

I saw that United were blowing steam/fire/whatever after a made three. Unless that's breaking the bank, it's a great idea. I went to an ice hockey game in St Louis a few years back and after a goal was scored, they played some massive ship foghorn sound. The place went nuts. Huge atmosphere.

I saw a bit of Wildcats/Breakers over the weekend and wondered what fans thought about the guys in red suits. There are so many of them now and they look really annoying. What do they actually do?

Reply #556078 | Report this post

Annoy me, thats what they do. They do it will.

Reply #556084 | Report this post

*well

I guess they are there to try and motivate the crowd but they do everything in such a lame fashion that it just doesn't work. Daggy dancing and playfights dont do it for me, or the crowd it seems.

The sneaking up behind someone routine is getting old too.

Many NBA teams have people dedicated to energise their particular section of the crowd with giveaways. But it's done in a straightforward way though rather than trying to be comic relief.
