Aussies in the 2016 NCAA Tournament

Conference tournament week saw the highest of highs and lowest of lows for the Aussies. Stephanie Reid led Buffalo to a most unexpected MAC title, whilst Ashleigh Karaitiana led Hawaii to the Big West title. Idaho's quartet of Aussies also secured a spot in the national tournament with a win over in-state rivals Idaho State. Unfortunately, it wasn’t such good news for some of the Aussies, with South Dakota and Saint Mary’s falling agonisingly short of reaching the big dance.

NCAA Women: Reid’s game-winner sends Buffalo dancing

Australia will be represented in the 2016 NCAA tournament by just two active representatives; Isaac Humphries at Kentucky and Jakob Cornelissen at Hawaii. Humphries and Kentucky qualified for an automatic berth in the big dance thanks to securing the SEC Tournament title, while Hawaii won a thrilling Big West Tournament final to book their ticket.

Three of the twelve Australians have survived the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, with Kristy Wallace and Baylor moving into the Sweet 16, whilst Alanna Smith (Stanford) and Rachel Antoniadou (Florida State) are each a win away from doing the same. Meanwhile in the Women's NIT, 7 Australians in six teams still remain in with a shot at taking home the silverware.

all three Aussie women advance to NCAA Sweet16, looks like Baylor(Wallace) and Florida State(Antoniadou) will play off, so at least one Aussie will be making the Elite8.

I think Baylor has a legit shot at winning it all.

The Aussie representation in the NCAA Tournament has come to an end, as Alanna Smith's Stanford and Kristy Wallace’s Baylor both fell in the Elite Eight. However there are still Australians in the hunt for a trophy. South Dakota’s Jasmine Trimboli and Nicole Seekamp will take on Jacinta Vandenberg and Oregon in the NIT semifinals after both teams got through the week with two wins, but not without scares as both teams survived nail-biters.

Nicole Seekamp cemented her status as one of South Dakota's all-time greats as the South Australian led the Coyotes to the WNIT title, securing the Tournament MVP award in the process. South Dakota’s NIT triumph was the school’s first postseason title in any sport, male or female.
