Under 17 Sapphires win World Cup

The Sapphires defeated Italy 62-38 in Saturday's FIBA U17 women’s world championship final to become the first team outside of the United State to win the tournament.

Australia beat the US in the semi-finals on Friday. Previously, no American team had ever been defeated in the men’s or women’s under 17s world championships.

The Australian women had never finished higher than fifth in the tournament, but looked to be among the world’s best at 2016’s event in Zaragoza, Spain.

The Sapphires’ starting centre, Ezi Magbegor, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player; averaging an impressive 12.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game, while shooting 54 percent from the field.

Magbegor was named to the tournament’s All-Star five, and she was joined by two of her teammates: the team’s captain, jasmine Simmons, along with star point guard, Monique Conti.

Great job girls,sensational effort!

Great work coaching staff! Hoping this places those coaches in good stead for the inevitable Opals staff re-shuffle that will be needed after Joyce is done mucking things up.

Conti reminds me of harrower a bit.

I think all 3 players on the all tournament team will get an u19 spot when qualifiers start in a few months.

I would also prefer Magbegor ahead of burton in opals squad...

Congratulations to a fearless young champion.

I've been waiting years to see an Australian team play like these girls did in Spain.

Such a positive and confident display of TEAM basketball.

US were shellshocked and of course instead of saying how well the Aussies played they were all about how they had not performed the way they should have.

Thats becuase they play for themselves not each other.

Well done Sapphires

Cole, Garrick, smart, madgen, Conti maybe in the backcourt?

I think we are a top 3 team at u19s next year also.

Also, we could see horvat at uconn next year...

Really like the way the Melb.Boomers are structuring themselves - fantastic turnaround from almost folding.

Can't wait for the U/19's next year, will be harder but if we can play with anything like the same confidence WOW.

Had a stacked squad and excellent assistants - that said he delivered big time. All that from a coach the Flames thought was no good.
