U18 Oceanias teams?

With the u18 Oceania tournament starting in a couple months, what might our teams look like with no USA based players being available?

Will we easily qualify for u19 worlds next year? Nz have some nice young players.

This age group appears very deep and flushed with talent in all areas, guards, forwards and centres. If the US based players are also available Caporn will have some hard decisions to make. There are plenty of big players at the AIS/CoE to choose from, so as usual it comes down to who is fit and available as these tournaments get closer. Both men and women look good to me, they are very young but I can see them both doing very well at this level.

Age makes more of an impact in the men's than women's I think, so yes the more 1998 born players the better. Got to have strong bodies and those two are strong for sure. Add some versatility to those two with another couple of big players who can spread the floor and you have a good start. Once again, comes down to availability I guess, Kentucky and SMU may want them back in July!

Reply #598608 | Report this post

I can't imagine Humphries playing worlds in July. Froling more likely but I still doubt that SMU will let him go. Maybe some of the boys in mid-high major schools will have a better chance of being allowed to play

Does anyone know how Gould got an invite to try out for the Oceania team? Couldn't get a run for Vic Metro at Nationals this year and did very little when given an opportunity.

Yet Goodchild and Mclean from the winning world championship team don't get invited?

The FIBA Oceania web site has the draws, but no team lists for any team either, strange with only less than a week before competition?

The Junior Tall Blacks have a big 7 footer supported by two 6'9" to 6'10" types, then the men's team looks average in height for a NZ team to me.

I am intrigued to see them play, does anyone know the strength of this team, is it in the shooting, I do recall previous teams being excellent field goal exponents...

If Simmons was fit she would start ahead of Rocci obviously and most likely Shelley, but she is on the injury list with Cochrane & Pizzey. So perhaps Conti or even Cubillo, but certainly not Rocci starting.

Boys team will be in trouble against NZ in the final, and if ever the NZ women can win this would be their best chance.

considering they have not had any training as a team, so would imagine those at the CofE will be starting to begin with, and the teams they will get to play other than NZ will be their training games in reality, the Aussie women usually thrash these Oceanic teams till they get to NZ, and this years NZ team looks to be a very good one, so will be interesting to see just how it plays out.

Rocci is a pg and Simmons is primarily a sf. not interchangeable..

A tenacious rebounder Maley...
The other parts of her game though, can she compete with simons shooting? Rowe as a tenacious defender? Simmons the engine room, glue girl?

I don't think they will take all 3. Add Horvat and bibby also.

The Australian Emus have completed their final camp and named the team of 12 that will compete at the FIBA Oceania Championships in Fiji next week.

The winner of the qualifying tournament will book their place at the Under-19 FIBA World Championships next year which will be held in Egypt from July 1-9.

Five members of the Emus team are Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence (CoE) athletes with Lat Nai joining Angus Glover who is the only member of the side from the 2015 Under-19 World Championships.

"It's just a great opportunity to put on the green and gold," said Glover.

“I wear those colours with pride every time and everyone is focused on the job at hand. To get back and play on the world stage like in 2015 will be amazing and I feel very confident in our team to do something special.”

The other three CoE members, Kyle Zunic, Samson Froling and Tom Fullarton, experienced international competition this year at the Under-17 World Championships in Spain.

Having played eight games with the Brisbane Bullets in the NBL, Matthew Kenyon will put his season on hold momentarily as he heads overseas while participants at this year’s Athlete Development Camp in Makuach Maluach, Jacob Rigoni and Samuel Short will also compete for the Emus.

Rounding out the team are two SA Metro team mates in Ben Carter and Isaac White as well as Gabriel Hadley.

“I am very excited about this group and proud of the commitment and effort they have shown already,” said Emus head coach Adam Caporn.

“Every individual is clearly invested and passionate about upholding the ideals upon which great Australian teams have been built.”

“We have been preparing the team intensely, and we are ready to represent Australia proudly in this tournament,” concurred Timothy Mallon, Emus assistant coach.

“We have a great emphasis on team work, defensive intensity, unity and a desire to do our very best for every minute of the game.”

The Emus campaign will tip-off against Tahiti on Monday, December 5 with the full schedule for both the Emus and Gems teams available here.

Emu's Men are very young, hope that doesn't go against them! Talent is there but one or two suspect calls that could hurt us against NZ. I like the Gems team very much and any age difference doesn't hurt in the women as much as it could the men.

Goo luck to both our Aussie teams!

Looking to beat NZ men with shooting, lots of shooting in this team. Bigs are there to defend and run sets to open up drives and shooting out wide. If NZ has a chance it will have to hurt AUS inside, but they will also have to shoot well too.

I disagree with the gems having no weakness.
Ogler has a different game to Simmons.
I don't see a great facilitator on this gems team. Imo, Molloy should be starting with Conti as backup. Rocci or Shelley playing 3rd string pg.
Not a great perimeter shoooting team. (Bibby and Horvat probably playing closer to the basket) Conti, and simons the only real consistent outside threat.
Magbegor is facing more physical players, (Whittaker, Dunn etc) different to those she faced in u17s. These players will try to go through her, not around her. Could get into foul trouble early.

Nz have a much better lineup than previous years. bigger, faster, lots more experience. Won't be a whitewash...

leger walker, Ruske, fuiava, Whittaker, and Dunn is a very strong lineup.

Gems, from what I saw, had size over the Tall Ferns. Also had skill over them, so when the Kiwi girls started losing on the scoreboard and got physical it didn't help them.

The boys are not lucky enough to have size over the Tall Blacks and the game looks like it will be tight, so I predict this will be a war!
