Draft a team from players who have played NBL

A little bit of a different approach to those greatest NBL players threads.

You have the chance to select a team from all the players who have ever set foot on the court in an NBL game.

I would think that in this case longevity, titles and performance while in the NBL will have less influence on the selection.

Select 5 starters and 5 bench.

From and the foul

Luc Longley was born 19 January 1969 in Melbourne, Victoria. At age sixteen Luc was a member of the Australian Under19 side and the following year, 1986, he joined the Perth Wildcats with whom he played two games. After 1986 Luc went on to attend University of New Mexico. From there he was drafted into the NBA where he spent 10 years.

That is the whole point of this thread. You can pick thee best team from anyone who ever graced an NBL court in a regular season game.

Pretty sure those 2 games Longley played for Perth were pre-season games weren't they?

Re Longley's NBL career, he played 2 regular season games, against Brisbane Bullets and Coburg Giants.

Luc Longley

Mark Davis
Robert Rose
Rimas Kurtinaitis
Mark Bradtke
Doug Overton

Doing this, it struck me that the NBL has had a lot of very good 3 and 4 men over the decades. Leaving out players like (Rocky) Smith, Ennis, Fisher, Andersen, (James) Crawford, MacKinnon and Hodge (cancerous personality aside) seemed wrong. And that's a short list.

Nice topic fstos.

Longley had two games in 86 before hitting Uni of NM in the NCAA ?? I'm shocked, shocked I say, shocked.

But i do know that the NCAA tightened up the eligibility of NCAA age-compliant players who had already played pro overseas, after Gaze had his time with Seton hall in 88/89. For some stupid reason I thought thats why Luc had not played NBL earlier, later was because of the NBA injury payout of his contract - I was wrong ... Bugger

I was unsure but had a faint memory that I had read about him playing a few token minutes so I spent some google time before posting my team.

Very Old I would be interested to see your team.

I think I will change Andersen to Bradtke in mine.

Hell of a team, fstos.
About the only tweak I'd make without extensive research is swapping Anstey out for Chris Williams.

2 imports, a few naturalised players in there though.
Lots of defense, scoring and winners on the bench as well as great role players and glue guys.

My starting PF was a toss up - I had thought of Ray Owes, Clarence Tyson, Jervaughn Scales, JC but went with the explosion of Trimmingham.

Forget about "best"- I'm picking a team I’d pay to watch. An 11 man roster in the spirit of 2011 NBL (and only 3 imports- I reckon all the other Americans here were naturalised)

We’re playing small ball, a bit like Dream Team circa Rio, but we’d be very hard to beat.

Starting 5:
Rosell Ellis*
Lucas Walker
Tucker*
Gaze(C)
D-Mac

Bench:
Anstey
Donta Smith*
Penney
Copeland
D Martin
Rob Rose

Yeah. I guess if you are picking the team based on their prime years Harrington needs a gig as well. Not talking about the bloated version that we saw at the Kings.

I too considered Brunson but didn't see enough of him in the NBA and only a few games here to sway me to include him.

Classifying Ced as naturalised a little early. Probably should have put Patty in for D-Mac.

I noticed LV put Lucas Walker in the starting 5 of a team where the OP wrote;

"You have the chance to select a team from all the players who have ever set foot on the court in an NBL game."

I didn't place any restrictions on imports.(or said you had to include one low IQ spud in LV's case)

Just try to pick the strongest team.

Aussie team - this is tough - Its really about how much they dominated their leagues at their peak. I'm not certain that Mills has a long enough track record yet - but then Larry S and Ray Borner absolutely dominated when at their peak.

PG
1 Phil Smyth
2 Cj Bruton
SG
3 Andrew Gaze
4 Ian Davies
5 Patty Mills
SF
6 Joe Ingles
7 Andrew Vlahof
8 Mark Worthington

9 David Andersen
10 Mark Bradke

11 Chris Anstey
12 Luc Longley

13 Ray Borner C
14 Larry Sengstock C
15 Bret Maher PG
16 Tony Ronaldson PF
17 Michael johnson SF
18 Darryl Pearce SG
19 Shane Heal SG

I think Brad Newley should be somewhere as well.

It depends if you want to go big with 3 centers from 10 to 14 above or go smaller with only 2 of them and add Maher/Heal or Newley .

I'd love to see a 3 way playoff amongst those three teams.

Who did Overton play for and when? I'd never even heard the name prior to this thread.

Penney isn't an import.

Penney is not an Australian Citizen, and is not eligible to play internationally for Australia, and probably does not even pay Australian Income tax, and you want to me to classify him as an Australian ? - stop trolling :)

From the Hawks website.

His one and only season with the Hawks was a weekly highlight reel, with Overton leading his side into the play-offs after averaging 24 points, 6.2 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals.

After being selected in the All-NBL's first team, Overton headed back to the US and played 11 seasons in the NBA..
