United vs Bullets, 20/10/16

Who wins the Boomer Battle?

The back story. Last week Bevo was generous to his players by refusing to throw them under the bus at his press conference, instead lumping praise on Blanchfield for his shooting.

In reality, Illawarra provided great offense at the defensive end last week, with a lot of work left to do in perfecting their Zone D. Melbourne turned it inside out with crisp passing, giving Toddy a bunch of clear looks from the corners. Brisbane, however, should make no such mistakes.

It remains to be seen whether the highly fancied UTD have a plan B, after their 8/38 effort from 3 resulted in a shock home loss to the 36ers, then the hot Toddy led them to a stunning 16/23 from outside en route to a comfortable win over the Hawks, who themselves shot poorly. Perhaps David Andersen needs to become a bit more like Rio Dave if this squad is to lift the trophy.

Meanwhile Bullets hadn't done a thing wrong this season, until late in last week’s game when Randle reminded us that he’s....in the words of Tina Turner, Simply the Best. The Bullets fearsome frontcourt presents a challenge for the great overlooked Majok Majok- who’s 5th in the league in rebounds despite playing 18 minutes a game- and Goggle Master Williams, who’s yet to impress in limited time.

This game will tell us plenty about both teams. Can United handle the Bullets on the inside? Or will they be manhandled like they were in the semi finals? Are the Bullets for real- do they have the fire power to run with the heavy artillery on Melbourne’s roster?

United by 8.

Brisbane just so unbalanced. Going to win a lot of games with the talent they have, but seemed doomed to stretches like this. Really need a shot creator at one of those backcourt positions.

The great no longer overlooked Majok Majok has been great tonight. Protecting the rim and hitting the boards like a fiend.

Bairstow struggling a bit. He was getting blown defensively for a bit there. Lemanis has to be smarter..teams will expose him in mismatches where possible. Lacks mobility to defend other mobile 3/4 and tweeners.

Contrasting styles this season. Bris, like Cairns will be a grind it out, win with D, go inside teams.

Perth will also struggle in their half court sets, and even with personnel changes will remain a physical, aggressive defensive team.

Then you have the finesse of Melbourne, and the pace of Adelaide and Illawarra.

So far, Sydney's showing the best balance of both worlds.

Ugly footage with Goulding there.

Not a huge loss though. I'd rather him go down for a few games than Cedric Jackson or Majok Majok.

Just asking the question, are Bairstow and Anderson auditioning for the WWE by any chance?

Devin Williams given limited opportunities again tonight. Clearly he isn't training the house down, otherwise he'd be getting more time you'd think.

Moore looking a shot at 6th man of the year.

United only put up 16 threes tonight. I wonder if that's a record under Demopoulos? Nice to see they didn't force it, and showed the patience to look at other options- and it worked.

Bris needs another guy who can create his own shot off the dribble. But, they can't sign another import can they- since Kenyon is a full squad member and therefore they've signed all 11? Can anyone confirm?

If they drop another game or two I wouldn't be surprised to see Beal gone.

Before the season started talk was Brisbane were not going to sign a third import this season as Bairstow was effectively going to be that player.

I doubt Beal goes though signed for this season and option for next season.

Still can't help but think Brisbane's problems aren't so much a product of poor player performance; but rather terrible roster balance.

I mean when you have Petrie playing the 3 spot surely that's a sign things are wrong.

Every basketball head i speak to says the NBL is one of the fastest leagues. Brisbane will suffer with a lack of mobility. Even their guards are a bit pedestrian. Need an athlete who can penetrate..ala Ced.
