NBL halfway mark report cards

Completion of tonight's games between Cairns and Sydney, and Perth and Melbourne, mark the half-way point of the season.

How have teams fared so far, against early season predictions? Here's my report card. :P

Adelaide: A-. They've done a whole lot more than I would have expected with such a young crew, without their Captain, and with Joey as coach.

Brisbane: B. It's been a very solid first half of the season for the new guys. LemonAss has done a very good job of drawing his team together. They still lack cohesion in big stretches of games, which will probably come with time.

Cairns: B+ (I'll give them an A if they win tonight!) Fearne has done a really good job with the team he has to work with, and being in fourth place after playing 8 away games and only 4 at home is very good going.

Illawarra: A. After struggling in the early rounds, Bevo has got his men believing in each other, and the team's lack of individual egos has them performing their roles really well.

Melbourne: E. Even given the injuries the team has suffered, Melbourne have massively underperformed, after the huge expectations placed on their star-studded roster. Hands up if you didn't have them in the top two, and streets ahead of the main bunch, before the season began.

Perth: C. I want to give them a lower mark, but Perth have been the most injury ravaged. I toyed with giving them a B, but they are the reigning champs, and haven't done a good job with personnel this season.

Sydney: A. What can you say? They're 2.5 games ahead of anyone else. Even 'though they are winning largely on the back of Lisch and Newley, they're still getting it done.

How does having Joey Wright as coach hinder the 36ers? He's no X's and O's specialist but he is by far the best motivational coach I have ever come across, players love to play for him.

Players rally around Joey and respect him, then you have someone Like Dean... Players ignore him and don't respect him.

You'll always get sharp offense from Joey and his teams will always score a lot of points on average, however you won't get a decent consistent defensive effort from his teams or much in the way of defending the perimeter. Which is the only thing holding the 36ers back this year.

You forgot New Zealand and Sydney are only 1.5 games ahead of Illawarra and Brisbane. For your report card I give you a D!

Sydney are also only 1.5 ahead of Cairns and Adelaide, meaning they could be fifth by the end of this round, or 2.5 games clear on top. It is truly a crazy season.

Melbourne United certainly have belly flopped into the season. They might not be far off of the pace but they;re just not playing at the level that you'd assume they would with their talent. Dean has to be gone next season.

Your marks are inconsistent.

How can you give Cairns B+ and Illawarra A? Cairns have had a tough fixture and injuries to Jawai, Loughton, and most importantly Trice. Hawks have been impressive lately but were horrible with a capital H for a few weeks earlier in the season. Very few injuries for them. Cairns A and Illawarra B for me.

And Sydney A? Hardly. I think they're underperforming given their talent. Sure, they are on top but thats where they should be. Underwhelming for mine. Maybe a B.

And Melbourne E? You do realise Goulding and Blanchfield missed 5 games each and Barlow missed 9 games? (Don't laugh, he's been handy in the last 3 games after a rusty first game back). Melbourne deserve about a C.

I don't see how their can be much difference between any of the teams given how even the season was expected to be and how even it is!

Adelaide B+
Brisbane B+
Cairns B+
Illawarra B+
Melbourne B-
New Zealand B-
