United announce Demopoulos contract not renewed

Coach announcement
Today we announce that the club has not renewed the contract of Head Coach Dean Demopoulos.

Dean signed with us on a two-year deal and from the time he was hired, has come to work prepared and passionate every single day. He has led our talented group with class and dignity. He shared a wealth of knowledge, and brought professionalism and experience to Melbourne basketball.

We appreciate all Dean has done at Melbourne United, we thank him and wish him all the best with future endeavours.

We will undertake a rigorous selection process to fill the role, and will make an announcement as soon as a candidate is appointed.

If MU are prepared to pay $600k+ they will get Goorj, otherwise I would say no chance in hell...

Dean Vickerman shortlisted.

McLeod? Dennis?

Goorjian has proved that you don't need a crowd to win. In his hay days at the Kings won everything including smallest crowd ever of 1430. Boring methodical basketball

I think the league can move past Goorjian now. He was good at what he did, but he also presided over the ugliest period of NBL basketball.

I find it baffling that Shawn Dennis can't get a gig.

For a team that dominated like crazy Sydney sure loved to ignore them! Although smallest crowds in the modern era go to that ugly as hell last incarnation of the Titans/Giants.

Do you think a team with Goulding and Ware would do well with an old school, "rack em and stack em" style coach like Dennis?

Maybe reigning Goulding in to a more controlled % based game style could be a good thing?

Thoughts...?

Surely the Spirit takes the award for smallest crowds & if you want to blame the coach then that was Bevo. Hmm, now that I think about it, how have the Hawks crowds been in recent years?

If Dennis wants the job it should be his. Followed closely by Vickerman. Both have winning pedigree and are proven developers of players. It wouldn't surprise me if they go (again) with a former NBA assistant as the 'sexy' pick to help increase hype and keep bums on seats for the short term.

Don't you just love Wildcats fans and how they troll a former coach who won a championship for them - in a totally unrelated thread! So classy.

Spirit or Slingers? Slingers inflated their numbers pretty badly, from memory.

Can't think of a coach I would list as responsible for poor crowd numbers. Often it's the organisation or the situation that drives most of that.

Good point. Probably Slingers were the worst if not inflated.

The Bevo comment is ridiculous considering he led the Wildcats to record crowds at Perth Arena in its first season.

As Gomer Pile would say:
Well sur-prise, sur-prise, sur prise.

I would love to see Dennis get a go, just to see what he could do with such a squad and some money.

Assuming Gaze stays in control in Sydney, wouldn't you think Vickerman would be on the agenda for Melbourne?

vickerman is in the running. Heard crivelli talking about it on a Melbourne radio station today. Stated there are about 8 candidates so far they are looking at. whether or not he is the front runner remains to be seen.

Crivelli is part of the problem as is JVG. I find it highly unlikely DV would move back into a "Tigers Team" Gaze LC and DV and then decide to move back. He left NZ for a reason.

I just can't see egos like goulding and ware trying to conform to system basketball, they are too free. You need a coach that will teach them defence first

Are any of Fearne, Wright, or Lemanis off contract?

I know Bevo signed a 4 year deal and Gleeson wouldn't happen. Not wanted anyway, he was rubbish when in Melbourne last.
