Opals - 2017 FIBA Women's Asia Cup

FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2017 - 23-29 July Bangalore, India.

Tournament Website

Teams competing: [FIBA Ranking]
- Australia [4]
- China [10]
- Chinese Taipei [34]
- Japan [13]
- New Zealand [38]
- North Korea [64]
- Philippines [49]
- South Korea [15]

Time to start thinking about Opals squads.

The tournament clashes with the WNBA season, so as it stands right now that likely rules out:
- Leilani Mitchell
- Sami Whitcomb
- Bec Allen
- Steph Talbot
- Cayla George
- plus our head coach

No clash with other seasons, so hopefully that means everyone else will be available for selection.

IMO

Mansfield/Clydesdale
Cumming/Cole/Seekamp
Blicavs/Kunek
Griffin/Mijovic
Cambage/Bunton/Scherf

No tolo, ohea, jarry or Lavey.
Give some other players an opportunity.

I agree it's a good opportunity for some younger players.
But keep in mind that there are some decent teams in the tournament so we can't afford to take it too lightly.
I'd still be including some more experienced players in the mix, for leadership as much as for results.

Not going to give Clydesdale a look in?

We only have to beat South Korea to qualify.

^ It's high time that Cumming was an Opal!

I'll go with

Mansfield/Clydesdale
Cumming/Ebzery/Phillips
Blicavs/Jarry
Griffin/Mijovic
Cambage/Tolo/Bunton

... though it's looking a tad top-heavy. I'd prefer youth, but am tempted to swap Bunton for Bishop just for team balance. No need to be too big vs the Asian teams IMO.

Exactly.^

China have 4 6'7-6'10 post players in development and a plethora of almost identical pgs.

Japan are super quick.

Not sure about nz...
Women's program is getting better but no real threat.

What happened to the camp they were meant to have in Phoenix early May? It either didn't happen or Liz skipped out because she's been steady DJing around the country.

^ apparently not enough players were available from the 30 they named in the squad for a camp, Lizzie was DJing that same week so she was one of them, be interesting how she goes with her WNBL commitments and her DJ aspirations if she cant for go for Opals commitments Boomers have no hope LOL

I thought I read the camp didn't go ahead due to the players and/or BA not getting travel paperwork done in time as well as the players not being able to attend. iirc the camp will be in June though I'm not sure how that would work because surely Sandy would have greater commitments and travel with the Mercury. Perhaps it will be held in Australia - but I've got no clue.

Does anyone know of the list of players who were/are invited for the first camp?
