36ers to play Christmas Eve

36ers are set to play Cairns Taipans at 3pm on Christmas Eve according to article in the Advertiser - page 3, basketball doesn't get too many page 3 articles even in season

Subscriber only article (unless you know the "hack" to read them without subscribing) http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/basketball/adelaide-36ers-to-host-nbls-first-ever-christmas-eve-fixture/news-story/4b27b9ed19e512506e6443e4ee399718

I don't mind it but then I would go to just about anytime game

The "hack" that I use is:
- go to the link posted
- the subscriber-only page only gives you a couple of lines of text, but it does give you the headline (in this case "36ers set for Christmas Eve present")
- copy & paste the headline into the search box of Google News search (news.google.com)
- the link that comes up from that search will usually get you to an unblocked version of the article

OMMMGGGG finally NBL are using special dates since changing to Summer in 1998. It's a.... Christmas miracle! It only took 19 years!

I like it also because it's not the literal eve of Christmas but earlier at 3pm (my family celebrate on Christmas Eve night which is the most important day to us rather than the commercialised morning of Christmas Day).

Because Christmas night isn't commericialised lol

I don't mind a 3 pm game on Christmas Eve. Anything before 6 pm won't interrupt most family's Christmas Eve traditions (if they have them).

Ricey Eve hasn't been commercialised. Very traditional still as opposed to the morning after.

I think loads of pubs would consider it commercialised.

lol... and the award for the most pretentious anon post of the off season goes to...

Great to see a Xmas Eve game on this year, I'm amazed that it took so long for it to happen!

If it hasn't been commercialised then what are all those movies and tv shows and everything else focused on that night for?

And what's more commercial than celebrating the birth of somebody on the wrong date lol

Ricey, what a cynical view on life. Next, you'll tell me that Christmas is just a Pagan festival taken over by Christians and that the Jesus story is just the retelling of the story of an Egyptian boy called Horus.

Wow... really? It's celebrating the eve of the birth. Moron! and saying "wrong date" goes to show you only view it in the commerical sense. Point made, thanks.

With this classic logic why do we celebrate New Year's Eve instead of just New Year's Day? hahaha

Alright now back to the bball...

It's a damn shame, Christmas eve I'm normally nude dancing around an old oak tree celebrating Dies Natalis Solis Invicti... as it the traditional Roman way...

I guess i can try and fit some basketball in before we get to the sacrificing of a goat to appease the great and glorious Sun God.

Yeah, got me on one point, but it's been shown that Jesus wasn't even born in December. So in the larger scheme of things I'm right. So yes, the celebration is still on the wrong date whether it be Christmas Eve or day.

Jus as long as the NBL don't try to schedule a game that clashes with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Rickey post # 63886

Does this mean you don't celebrate Christmas with the Griswalds?

I'll bet you don't even recognise the Easter Beagle instead. The Easter Beagle personified (or cananised, or canonised) the Christian message of Easter. Snoopy's Christmas also spread the Christmas message.

There are some great pop-cultural holiday appropriations that rise above the commercialisation of religious celebrations.
