Lachlan Dent, like many other NSW U20 men, did not trial. Add to that list Joel Rauch (reserve last year), Matur Maluach, Brandon Freire, Ben Fakira (already in the US), Jaidyn Goodwin - all who played top age 18's for NSW Country and Metro.

That kid works his tail off. If he wants to be a footy player I'm sure he'll do fine. What a shame for basketball.

The number of real players who either didn't make themselves available or withdrew in the first few weeks reinforces the irrelevance of this event. It’s been dying for years now... could be time to end it. The men’s teams contains a number of players who could be the Steven Bradbury of their time... good luck to them, but no way should government funds be spent on this indulgence...

Gives those who aren't on college radars one last chance.

Maybe a further opportunity for any first year players that get selected that arent college ready yet. I know 1 SA player that fits this category, so the sample size may be thin.

How much govt funds do you think are spent on this 'indulgence'?

Very relevent for college kids. If they are on the radars but schools are not ready to jump in just yet this is the best way for kids to get that final push for a scholarship. Remove this event and you remove the opportunity for quite a lot of kids to gain that lucrative scholarship they have worked their whole junior career for, investing big bucks into being inovlved in previous nationals. For other kids who might have always just missed out there are sometimes a spot or 2 for them to finally represent their state. Take the U20 nationals away and you do MAJOR damage to the pathways and opportunities for athletes.

So do you think those players who already have signed with colleges or have been offered scholarships or signed in the wnbl/nbl should Play?

That would rule the entire vic women's team out.

I think 20s serves its purpose. The kids who get the most out of 20s are often those who are younger, not just bottom-age, but born in the later part of the year and therefore an academic year behind. They have only just finished year 12 when they go to 20s as top-agers, unlike the older college-bound kids who will miss their top-age 20s Nationals. Given that they spend their whole junior careers competing against kids who are 6-11.9 months older than them, I'm actually really glad that they then get the opportunity to be among the best or oldest kids at a national tournament.

18s certainly retains its place as the peak junior nationals, in my opinion. And it's a shame that 20s is losing kids not only to college, but to other sports or lack of interest. But that doesn't mean we should do away with it altogether. If you're going to make that case, you can make the same case for 14 club champs, which never feature all the best players in the country, nor the 24 best club teams. As noted above, sometimes it's about pathways and opportunities as much as anything else.

Always has been a lot of talk about losing good male basketballers to footy.
A lot of young women have dropped basketball completely now for afl.
