Lakeside's new coach, David Daniels, has arrived from the USA and been working with his young roster.

From all accounts Lakeside haven't had much luck in recruiting locals. I believe they looked to get Jackson Hussey and Louis Timms who ended up going to Redbacks and Suns respectively.
Perhaps looking at Lay as another option for their PG spot?

The loss of Parkinson leaves their most experienced local player as Hayden Bell, who is still pretty young in his own right and had the second half of the 2017 season off.

It will be interesting to see how things play out for them over the remainder of preseason and who they get as imports. They do have some exciting young talent in Garbellini and Mackenzie who will likely have big roles in 2018

The Land bros both have full time assistant coaching gigs in NCAA II now. I would be surprised to see either of them play SBL again considering the months of their college off season (same time as SBL season) are where they do the bulk of their recruiting.

The land brothers were overrated anyway. One had two good seasons here then literally limped through his final one, and the other is a dirty, cheap shotting point guard who averages single figure points a game at a horrible percentage. Mandurah have made some stupid decisions in the past recruiting wise, but this would have to be up there with their worst if true.

After the season he had, I wouldn't expect Will McNeil to return to the sbl anytime soon. More likely he has moved onto greener pastures.
Remember the sbl is known internationally as a "development league for imports".. makes you wonder why some clubs don’t develop their own locals.. hello Mandurah Magic!
But not to worry they will import players to provide 80% of their offense and probably still finish last. They are definitely developing.. imports that is!

wow someone obviously has an axe to grind

Damon Ballantyne and fletcher klaztorny are as home grown mandurah as they come. They were both starters in Mandurahs line up and had good seasons considering their experience level and age.
Mullenax has to be considered a part of the Mandurah woodwork being an Aussie citizen now and having played probably close to 150 games there, maybe more?

I don't recall them having many, if any players from other clubs this year? at least any of any significance.

From all accounts Will didn't end up going and playing anywhere else after his season in the SBL. he would be a great asset to continue to help develop the young Mandurah locals

COCKBURN APPOINTS NEW GENERAL MANAGER

The Cockburn Basketball Association is pleased to announce the board has named Tyrone Thwaites as
the clubs new General Manager.

Thwaites is an energetic Cockburn local and began his junior WA basketball career with the Cougars
in 2005.

As a University of Western Australia graduate, Thwaites brings a broad range of skills and knowledge
to the club, including an extensive understanding of TV, radio and media.

After coaching elite WA state junior basketball teams for several years, Thwaites high standards of
positive leadership saw him appointed the director of Cockburn's WA Basketball League program in
2017.

Now ready to tackle a new challenge with the club, Thwaites said he was eager to get in to his new
leadership role in 2018.

"It’s an exciting time to be a member of the Cougar family, our aim has always been to be WA’s family
club, and we will continue to work to that goal," he said.

“I’m looking forward to leading Cockburn into an era that breeds a culture of sustainability, success
and family.

“I’m very proud to represent the club I love, and I can’t wait to get stuck in with and get working in
our community.”

Cockburn Basketball Association is currently home to more than 1500 athletes of all ages and abilities
and provides pathways from pre-school through to the men’s and women’s WA state league teams.

Thwaites will commence full-time with the association on January 29th.

Congrats to Ty on the appointment

on Cockburn - will they be getting a second import for 2018? They did really well in Nener's first season as HC and got a great import in Billups. You would think if they had another player of that similar level they could really push those top teams.
They will have Pesava for the full season this year. A healthier Field. If they can get Billups back and perhaps a gun wing import they would be extremely tough.

The "Oceania Player" exemption is nothing new and has been around for years. In fact most SBL clubs (if not all) would have had at least one player play for them over the past decade under that exemption.

But in 2018... no, the Giants are not looking at any player from the FIBA Oceania region (NZ, Guam, Fiji etc etc) playing for us in 2018.

1) Greg Hire to Rocko no way. Unless he's unrestricted and replacing Kernich-Drew?

2) On another topic, interesting that SBL is so far behind leagues like SEABL etc in terms of fixturing and media etc. SEABL website up to date and easy to use. Constant video and fan engagement. SBL have many resources and last video was of the Blitz last year? SEABL fixture release today clean quick and easy to understand - shortened 20 week season and those guys have to fly to games??? 20 weeks and neat and tidy finals series that doesn’t drag out. Start in mid April to allow for lengthened NBL season like any league should in Australia not start in Mid March and done by mid August.

Have to wonder why the local NBL players don’t play and those that do take off.

SBL being killed by players leaving for SEABL ... from last year NO Holmen, Turner, Nichols, Jack and Possibly Billups. All headed east. Bragg, Vague, Kernich-Drew all highly unlikely to return and Redhage may be done... weak competition coming up. Too many teams and too long of a season. Condense the talent and shorten the season to allow for more NBL guys to be interested. Compete with SEABL and QBL dont just admit defeat. Has to be some change. 10 teams 16 weeks. Final 4 format like NZNBL.

The SBL has it's own Restricted Player Policy, and as of January 2017 the policy is based around the 25% rule. In other words 10mins per game is the limit.

I haven't heard anything from the SBL in respect to this changing for 2018.

Reply #665397 | Report this post

Lukosius
Years ago

The SEABL rule is different and quite complex, as you can have up to 3 'restricted' players, based on their level of restriction.

Further to this, SEABL teams can also have up to three Asian born development players who are not classified as restricted players. However only one Asian born development player can be included in a game day roster of 12.

1) Hire will be at Rockingham. They are paying him big $$$
2) SEABL is a better organised fixture no doubt.
Most of the NBL guys a the Wildcats who play SBL aRE from the East anyway. They only play here because they are under contract by the Wildcats. Bragg and Kernich Drew must be close to not being Wildcats next season.
Redhage is playing for Perth again. its one of those"Im playing for free" deals.
Jack is coming back and will be the second import/Restricted Player for Rockingham next to Hire.
Turner is trying to Naturalise so he can compete for NBL gig as an Aussie. He wants to be close to the East to be close to the majority of teams eyes.
Billups is 95% back to Cockburn.
Holmen Injured.
Nichols See Turner explanation.
Vague needs to explore life outside Perth as he will never be anything more than he is with the Wildcats. he needs to find a new opportunity asap.

No assumptions Perth are bringing back pretty much the same team with Hussey taking Nelson's spot. That being said if Nelson doesn’t get an SEABL gig he may be back as well. Everyone’s seems to forget that a salary cap is not an issue. That can be worked around quite easily. Personal sponsors, sponsors employing people are a thing in a semi pro league.

Again this is why the SBL is such a crap league. SEABL make the adjustment to bring in more NBL guys and compete with NZ NBL to make the league more appealing to play in. SBL stays as is, loses good imports to east and does nothing to fix it.
No Kernich Drew, No Bragg, No Vague, No Wroe, No Redhage.

Watch when Jackson Hussey goes for 30 points a game and everyone carries on like he should be the NBL. No NBL team will take those numbers seriously in the 4th best state league in the country.

Comparing the SBL with SEABL is ridiculous. Everyone knows that the SEABL is the premier competition in Australia outside of the NBL. Has been for 30 years since it was called the ABA, and will continue to do so in years to come.

A lot of their policies (including the restricted player policy) are significantly different from the other 2nd-tier leagues like ours, and a lot of the reasons behind that is because the SEABL is the next level down in the Australian basketball pyramid.

Players who head to the SEABL from the SBL, QBL, BigV etc etc, are doing so because it is the "next level up", not because the SBL is crap, the QBL is crap etc etc.

Fair is fair - if you want to compare the SBL with other leagues, then compare with the QBL and BigV (and even now the Adelaide Premier League). Don't compare apples with oranges. It's just a stupid argument.

Wroe and Redhage are all returning this year so...

The number of NBL players in the league has increased in recent years as well.

If the SBL is such a terrible league, why are you on this forum?

Back to reality, Senators are putting together a nice little squad:

PG - WROE
SG- *JUSTIN KING* IMPORT
SF- ELLIS
PF- *ROBERT ANSHILA* IMPORT
C- LITTERICK

King last played in the Big V, 6'5 SG
Anshila has bounced around a few Middle-Eastern leagues, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi and the like. 6'7 SF but will play PF in this league.

Doesn't exactly confirm that Benjamin is the other import. In fact the use of the word 'prospect' says to me that they are 'hoping' both of their imports will be marquee-level.

I'm sure that if Benjamin was still contracted then he would have been mentioned by name in the release.

Have spoken to parties both extremely close to Rockingham and Wanneroo and let's clear some things up. Rockingham were well aware of Hire's restricted player status, they are more than happy to have him in that position.

In regards to that 'healthy' offer that the Wolves offered - it definitely wasn't healthy. It was insulting and disrespectful to a player that has done quite a bit for that club. The Wolves have prioritised paying 2 Imports a considerable wage as well as up to 6 players from their current squad; with Hire not being guaranteed for finals, for those that remember there was a pretty big agreement between Wildcats & the Wolves two years, subsequently they have not prioritised him as off-season signing which is perfectly fine. They are a club with a talented roster with plenty of youth coming through.

Hire going to the Flames gives him an exciting challenge and a opportunity to get out of his comfort zone. I'm sure he would've loved to play for the club he grew up playing for so something has obviously happened along lines of communication. Hopefully this pushes the Flames up the ladder and get's another club into Finals calculations.

My very early predictions based on signings. Feel free to comment.

Wolves - Billups plus a core, don't care if Benjamin's there or not, team to beat.

Redbacks - Redhage, Vigor, Roberts and Hussey. Easily 1 or 2.

Tigers - Face value says a downgrade on Turner only because we've seen Ray, but could be a like for like.

Senators - 2 imports but will have to rotate Ellis it looks. Should be up there with Litterick improving year on year.

Giants - 2 imports + PR import + home court worth 3+ wins. Holmen is a huge loss but they've got their group together early this year to hit the ground running.

Hawks - Monroe looks average but they were close to the best team in the second half of the year last season when Parsons sent a rocket.

Buccs - Not much news, but always recruit well + deadliest home court advantage in the league.

Eastern Suns - My pick to play post-season this year, albeit lose first round. Davis is a 20/15 machine and Belger is a stud. Timms and a few locals fill in the gaps.

Flames - Hire's flakiness will be a worry, good recruit but would be more value for money as an unrestricted player. The only way I see them making Finals is if Cooper comes back.

Cougars - with a change in management, I wouldn't be surprised if Cougars go a year without an import... though we always write them off and they always come Goode.

Lightning - 1 import secured, looks okay. Good youths but they're all away at college or AIS (Ferguson, Shervill, Grida). Another tough year for the purp.

Magic - no news so far. Lack players in most positions and their one local Klasztorny kid is at college I'm pretty sure.

Slammers - Add Catalano, minus Nichols. 13th

Eagles - no news again, if Pinder or Dech came back, maybe Jervis, then 7th/8th but the reality of that is very very low.

The fixture this year has not been kind to the Cougars... only 3 of the first 10 games at home and a heap of Friday night away and Sunday games. Could be a tough start for the boys at Wally Hagan.

Rockingham with six out of their first ten away also so it's not just a bad draw for Cockburn. That being said though, it both teams get through those first nine or ten games above .500 then having more than half of their remaining games at home should put them in.good stead

Fair play to Lako, won a championship. I ask the question, would he have won it without Redhage. No.

This year, he goes out and gets Hussey and Barrow, to ADD to Vigor, Roberts and Redhage. He isn't going to get any praise for winning with a stacked team. Redbacks shooting themselves in the foot again giving all their money to SBL when they're Juniors are falling apart.

Matt Parsons has earned the leagues respect with what he did with his team 2 years ago, and even the Hawks last year after a terrible start. Randy Meigel, Doccy, hell even Nener. But Lako is just opening the cheque book. for shame.
