Any news on whats happening up the hill in Kalamunda. Is Clarke still going to run that "Havoc" style of ball? How is Davis and Timms fitting in?

Reply #675043 | Report this post

Coach Clarke
Years ago

Same style of play for us in year 3. Davis is going well and is a great fit. Timms is still rehabilitating a serious knee injury - not sure if and when he will play - but he will also blend well into our style.

Curious concept.

Is there a cap on "Development Officers" per team in the SBL? If not a legislated cap, an ethical position ?

I think Perth Redbacks have a ratio of about 1 : every 10 Basketballers.

Let's assume and trust, for a moment, that they actually deliver Basketball programs, and don't just play SBL as a feature of their employment.

Must be lots of development outcomes, great for the game.

Anyway, I'm sure the SBL, who are charged with upholding the integrity, equity and standards of the competition, are reviewing this clearly emerging circumstance post-haste...

The Slammers could have 8 imports, with the muppet they got coaching the mens they still won't win hardly any games, save perhaps against Mandurah. If you don’t believe me, just watch! I give Voelkel about 4 games before he goes off at him.

Hawks 4-0 looking deadly, first the blitz champions, now my bet for the End of season champs, will probs also take home the award for most $3.50 pints sunk at the Vic. #WhoWillStopEm

The Vic
Years ago

We would just like to announce our official sponsorship of the league in 2018.

Although there is no economic sponsorship in a financial sense we will be offering the same $3.50 pints all day everyday to any person that tells us they are SBL players.

We will also be serving them to any people who don't say they are SBL players.

there is one exception to the rule, if any memeber of the Wolfpack orders a bargain pint they will have to pay 14.90.

My take on the Blitz, and how I think the teams will go considering what players they have to come in....

1st - Redbacks
Their championship to lose. No imports or Vigor at the Blitz, and Redhage with the cameo one game. Still went 3-1.

2nd - Wolves
Hardly an SBL player to be seen on the weekend, and have a pretty handy starting-5 to come in.

3rd - Hawks
Thomas and Cummings come in to give them experience (Thomas) and depth in the backcourt. Garlepp and Hickert also back to help out with the bigs.

4th - Buccs
Natsesan was okay but Lasher was underwhelming. Ross is a big "in" though and will be their go-to player.

5th - Tigers
Similar team to last year except Diagne/Johnson replace Turner/Cody, though there's a tiny chance Cody will be back before seasons end.

6th - Giants
One of the big improvers. Imports look good, particularly Sharpe, but the surprise was Martin who was their leading scorer and the Blitz's best 3-point shooter.

7th - Lightning
If it's true about Alexander (along with Prue also being back) then they are back in the top-8.

8th - Senators
Justin King looks pretty good, however Ellis and Ashila were the only ones missing and they could only get one win. I actually see a drop-off in 2018.

9th - Eastern Suns
No imports, Horn or Timms on the weekend, and Timms might not be ready until halfway thru the year. Will improve from 2017.

10th - Flames
Import + Hire didn't play on the weekend so hard to judge. If that is all they have to come in then they won't make the playoffs.

11th - Cougars
Field (Blitz leading scorer) and the import will have to average 60 between them as I can't see anyone else scoring in double figures.

12th - Eagles
Import Morse was solid and they were okay on the weekend but don't have anyone of note to add. Won't finish last but won't make the top-8 either.

13th - Slammers
Robinson was okay but they will need a stud with the second import. Weeden a shadow of his former self on the weekend.

14th - Magic
Stewart will be good but Shabazz was average at best and the Blitz looked a bit out of his league. Pal didn't play so he will definitely help but won't get them off the bottom.

A week out from the season and not much advertising or fanfare from Bowler and co. No radio show this year? I heard cecins has said he won't do it any more. It would be great to have a YouTube channel or weekly episode like they do over east. Far out even R@nD0m doesn't do his previews any more. The league is going downhill faster more than a Wildcats fourth quarter! Too soon?

I have it on very good authority there is an email in circulation from late last year that states if identified players transferred to the club, then the costs involved with attending this year's Dandenong tournament as well as this year's wabl fees, would be covered by the club, sent from the club General Manager. If proven true this must make both of their teams ineligible to compete at the national championships?

Green with Envy will BWA look into the recruitment of players to Stirling No they won't.
Don't think many BWA look into any matters.
Another club did the same thing a couple of years ago, Willetton lost a couple of boys that were starters to them with free WABL fees for their touring team.

Suitable refs, refs will make mistakes, most are learning just like 13 year old players.
When players can make every shot, pass and rebound can you then expect perfection from refs etc.

Dont think BWA have assigned resources to spend all day looking though all the basketball forums for "rumours" in junior basketball to investigate from posters who are unknown. Perhaps if you really want them to investigate, and have evidence, arrange a meeting with BWA to show them and discuss your complaint!

Refereeing WABL/grading games is the responsibility of the CLUBS.

If you think the refs are not suitable, speak to your clubs ref supervisor or WABL admin.

MSBL Round 1

Redbacks vs Lightning (Friday)
Redbacks missing a few versus a Prue-led Lakeside. Redbacks still impressive at the Blitz without half their team and will get up in this one by 10 points. Prue with 4p & 18r.

Flames vs Senators (Friday)
Unlikely to see Washington play as he's not even in the country yet. Will come down to whether Hire plays. If he does I'm picking an upset Flames win by 8 points. If he doesn't it will be Stirling by 12 points.

Cougars vs Eagles (Friday)
Two teams who will struggle to make playoffs. Is the Cougars import here yet? I still see them getting up by 6 points whether he plays or not.

Redbacks vs Buccaneers (Saturday)
If both teams had full line-ups, this will undoubtedly be Game of the Round. That aside it will be an 8-point win to Perth over a Buccs team fresh off the bus.

Hawks vs Magic (Saturday)
Should be a walk in the park for PL as they should have a full line-up and the Magic line-up oozes a bottom-2 team. Hawks by 20.

Wolves vs Tigers (Saturday)
Wolves not showing any of their cards at all at the Blitz while the Tigers were average with most of their line-up. Wolves by 12 points and Willetton underwhelm us.

Flames vs Giants (Saturday)
The Aussie line-up of both these teams look even, but it will be the Giants 3x imports versus the Flames 1x import+Hire that will get the fresh Giants a 6-point win. Hire doesn't play then it's a 12-point win.

Eagles vs Buccaneers (Sunday)
Eagles with the extra 24 hours break will take it up to the Buccs who may still not have Ross. However Gero should sneak a 4-point win which will be far greater if Ross is actually here and plays.

Senators vs Giants (Sunday)
Giants a bit worse-for-wear after a tough win the night before, while the Senators will be fresher and at home. Stirling by 12 points.

Eastern Suns vs Slammers (Sunday)
A late Sunday game to finish the round will see the Suns hammer the Slammers with their press and get up by 16 points.

Love the people who gather favoritism before the first show has even gone to air. Regardless of who the host is, for it to be a knowledgeable and fairly educated show that is well liked by the basketball community - then naturally the person hosting would have some affiliation with one of the clubs.

Chech, for all his knockers, did a great job for many years in covering the League for the most part as a regular fixture in the local media - whether it was on Sport FM or with current League partner 98five.

For those on here who think that only certain clubs are favoured (In this instance with me hosting this year - Rockingham for example), then I genuinely challenge you to get your clubs to get in contact with me via email or through someone at your club who knows me... I think i have someone at most clubs who has my info, or just message me on Social Media. Part of the direction I want to take the show this year is to have lots of interaction from all of the clubs - in particular the coaches for your respective Men's & Women's teams.

Simply put, we want the clubs to take a bit of ownership with the radio show as it essentially is for everyone in our close knit basketball community to enjoy, have input on and be as informative / inclusive as possible.

We will also have an SMS line this year where we will have some weekly competitions with some great prizes from station sponsors, and we would love to also get feedback or questions on that line also that we will throw out on air if appropriate. Like I said and I know Chech was also very proactive about - the radio show is for our entire League to be proud of and want to be involved with... If you want it to be better, then tell us how we can improve it or if it's because your coach is 'never' on, I will do my best to get every coach we have in the League on air sometime this year.

OK so with the permission of the crew at 98five - we will launch our first competition here. It will be open until the this coming Sunday Night (18th March) so make sure you share with your friends around the different clubs. Very simple competition and I am currently working with the Commish A Bowler to see if we can get some tickets to the GF as prizes - If not we will definitely have a great prize from one of the fantastic sponsors of 98five.

Pick the two Grand Final teams - One comp for the Women's, One comp for the Men's. Send your answers with the hashtag #SBLSlamGFComp with your name and a contact number to 0429 985 985. If there are multiple entries who pick the correct two teams, we will draw out of a hat on the last show for the year the winning entry out of those correct answers.

Also - To make the first show a bit more interactive, using the info line number 0429 985 985 & the hashtag #SBLSlamPredictor, send me the one thing you are looking forward to for the upcoming season and I will throw some shoutouts on air this Tuesday night to those appropriate for airplay ;-) If you want yours read out on air, put your name with it too!

Yeah as Lukosius has stated, the upkeep of the Tipping Comp is the hardest part unfortunately

In regards to the Grand Final Comp - I have been advised by the Commish that we will indeed have a Double Pass for each Grand Final on offer to the winners of the competition. Just for clarification, that does not mean if you guess the two correct teams for the Women's Grand Final - you don't however then a double pass to the Men's Grand Final also. For whichever Grand Final you successfully predict - that is the Grand Final you will receive the double pass for :-) (Yes i've had a few messages this arvo about it)

Impressive performance by the Hawks men tonight, they looked good albeit not much opposition.

Just wondering, if the Magic get 70 combined points from their two imports and Pal, yet cop a 30 point loss, how many do these three have to score between then to be competitive?

The gave up 121 points at 53% so they will probably need 100 points from them in order just to be in the game.. Scary!

Well, the Hawkies are legit contenders and the Magic look like the legit wooden spooners.

Ha ha ok i will bite. Shambles of a club? Womens team in gf last year and just beat the hawks ladies who won it.... mens team clearly going through rebuilding years. Losing mully remmerswal bowman jarrad jackson in last two years over 1000 games experience. Also was down by 26 at one stage last night got it back to 9 the next quarter. Take nothing away from hawks they were on fire from deep. But calling them a shambles of a club is pretty funny when the hawks dj plays the defense chant from a recording..... the country teams would enjoy hearing that. Its round one

Sounds like I touched a nerve there.. makes me think it is true. It's only what O hear but your overreaction has just confirmed it. And also confirmed you are one of the shambolic. If your club was 1% of what the Hawks are you would be in a much better position.

Granted your women’s team are pretty good but let’s see who wins when it really counts for something. Don’t make excuses, your men’s team have been the laughing stock for the last 20 years. Mullenox has been replaced by Pal who is far superior, Bowman hardly played last year and Jackson didn’t play. 20 years is one hell of a rebuilding program.

Anyway good luck in Shambolia and keep dreaming of a real club with prestige like the the good ol Hawkies

The Mandurah men's side was pretty ordinary. It was a decent hit out for Hawks. They smacked them in the first. They then had a period in the middle were they kind of switched off and let Mandurah score some easy baskets, but responded as they should. A good shooting night by Cummings and Smith complimented by their vets and imports just playing solid basketball. Tyler Monroe was impressive without really getting out of second gear because of early fouls. The Hawks rotated 12 guys through and they all contributed. None of them looked out of place.

Mandurah imports shot a lot. They probably should have used Pal a bit more. The rest of the combined for just over 20 points. They just don’t quite have the talent or depth you would hope for.

Imports wise, definitely King along with Sharpe (Giants - He kept them in the game on Saturday night, and looks like the only one who showed up yesterday) & my final puck would be Maurice Barrow.

Player of the Week though surely has to go to Loughton. Strong game Friday night then huge off the bench with Redhage starting on Sat night.

Which is the biggest headline from the weekend:

1. The Suns massive win at home over the more fancied Slammers?
2. THAT 45 point loss by the Giants yesterday to the Senators, with only two players in double figures
3. Prue, after so long away from the game, showing why he is the Greatest Rebounder tgis league has ever seen. Don't sleep on that Lightning team once they get Alexander in that lineup

I watched the Suns v Slammers.

Going to be a long season for the Slammers if they don't play defence and box out. Suns have never had so many second chances.

Also helped that the Suns shot 40% from the 3pt line!

In offence why the Slammers had size and plenty of mismatch opportunities, they must have skipped the YouTube Post Up 101 Video!

The faster playing style of the Suns saw the Slammers slower in the 4th.

Good to have SBL back!

1) Not sure why the Suns would have been underdogs there Random. They have the same system and a bit more depth now with a legit big behind them for once. had them pegged to easily deal with the undercooked Slammers.

2) this has to be the biggest suprise? Giants were picked pre season to be a bit of an improvement. Lost an MVP but gained some depth? Tough start

3) The man is a freak. Once they have Alexander they will win the rebound count almost every game but backup big depth still an issue until Shervill arrives back from college

Bunbury didnt stand a chance against this new look suns. They were holding their shorts gassed as by half time. Davis adds a whole new element to their game, no one should take them lightly. Cant take advantage of mismatches and post ups when the pace is as quick as Suns play

POWER rankings after round 1....

1st - Redbacks (preseason 1st)
Roberts will come in for Loughton and they will also add Vigor. Will get better.

2nd - Wolves (preseason 2nd)
Jury still out on import Sullivan while Clausan seemed short of a run.

3rd - Hawks (preseason 3rd)
Confortable win as expected.

4th - Senators (preseason 8th)
Two from 2. King is good and they should make the top-4.

5th - Buccs (preseason 4th)
Underwhelming on the weekend but will improve with Ross.

6th - Tigers (preseason 5th)
Not as good as last year but a top-6 team.

7th - Lightning (preseason 7th)
Alexander is a BIG 'in'.

8th - Eastern Suns (preseason 9th)
Will give teams headaches, as showed yesterday vs Slammers.

9th - Flames (preseason 10th)
DKD out injured already.

10th - Giants (preseason 6th)
Tough weekend. True colours showing?

11th - Eagles (preseason 12th)
Morse looks pretty good. not much support though.

12th - Cougars (preseason 11th)
Import problems already?

13th - Magic (preseason 14th)
Scored enough but defence is atrocious.

14th - Slammers (preseason 13th)
4x imports means 4x the scrutiny.

Magic would be fine if they did what Perth do.
Add redhage/loughton/hussey/barrow to any team and they will contend.

Some clubs have the $$$$ to do it, some dont.
Its not good coaching, good recruiting maybe..
$$$ talks.

Would it hurt Redbacks to play some local kids for first few games instead of bringing in Loughton...?

At least Mandurah are playing local kids, along with Slammers and Flames

Gattorna - HAWKS
Giorgi - HAWKS
Hussey - COUGARS
Loughton - NBL
Redhage - NBL
Roberts - IMPORT
Vilardi - EASTERN SUNS
Vlahov - HAWKS

...

Claims to give Redbacks juniors a pathway, stacks team with non-locals.

I see the Catalano effect has taken hold on the previously playoff level Slammers. Te wooden spoon is between them and the Magic no doubt. Looking like they both struggle to win more than 2-3 games all year long.

Can't understand the logic behind the Slammers going with that coach. He wins what? 1 game in 2 seasons, then they get Harrelson and go all the way to the sbl grand final in the midst of several good playoff seasons. Last year they get a good coach and make playoffs. Now back to the dump.. crazy logic!

Also listened to it, nice show first up.

Two pieces of advice, don't breath so heavy through your nose mate. You can hear that wind tunnel during the Lako interview. Unless of course that was the hot air escaping lako’s head. After the 45 minute banner raising ceremony I was surprised there was enough time for him to do an interview.

Secondly, it’s Saturday, not "satday", Probably a jerk comment by me, but when radio is about verbal communication it’s probably worth including all the letters in the word.

Great Job Trav,

First episode you can understand him interviewing Rocko coaches who are easier to access on game day at his home club. I'm sure more teams will be interviewed during the season.

Remember Trav is a volunteer spending his time to provide something of value to the league. Lets not burn people for trying to help the sport regardless of the content/opinion.

People like to rag on Carl Catalano but there was no applicants for the Bunbury role going into January and this guy has stepped up to save the club some face in not having a coach for pre-season. He is up against it this year with a roster he has yet to develop.

Hahaha I was waiting for the flack on having Sammy and Peto on the first show. Truth be told I had spoken with coaches from both teams pre-game on Friday and Saturday night to say if they won, could we do a interview for the show afterwards. As it turned out, the Flames won both of those games. In hindsight I could have done Mike after the Senators win on Fri night but hey you live and learn.

Thanks for the positive feedback (The breathing thing had more to do with back end of a head cold more than getting excited over interviewing Lacko haha) I will be the first to admit it will take some time to get used to the flow of the show, and I do want to make it as inclusive and engaging as possible - but as I said last week, that can only happen if all clubs are proactive in wanting to be involved on the show.

This week we will have Randy Miegel, head coach of the Mandurah Magic Women, and Scott Rubery from the Goldfields Giants on the show. We will also have a new 'Name the Player' competition where I will give cryptic clues on a current player in the League, of which you then sms through your answers to the competition line (0429 985 985) - then the following week we will select a correct winner from the SMS line.

Week Two Men's Preview

Eagles @ Perry Lakes
Eagles with a nice win on the road over the Cougars on Opening Night before just having a massive second half comeback fall short against the Buccs at home on Sunday, but this presents a much tough task for them up against a team I think will challenge for the title this year in the Hawks. Parso's boys easily accounting for the Magic at Headquarters last weekend and I see this going much the same way. HAWKS RELATIVELY EASILY BY 16

Suns @ Perth
VERY interesting game this one. It was only one game but alot of positives coming out of Kalamunda's 20+ point win at home over the Slammers in Week One, and they will head to take on the defending champs with a 'nothing to lose' mentality. For Perth, they have advertised as this will be Loughton's last game and given the form he was in last weekend, along with the strong return of Redhage, the Spiders could send Alex off on a winning note if they hold their form and contain Davis & Belger. LIKELY TO BE CLOSER THAN SOME MAY THINK, BUT I STILL SEE PERTH TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS, WINNING BY 9

Cougars @ Goldfields
Horror opening road trip for Rubes and the Giants, losing a close one to the Flames last Saturday night before being absolutely embarrassed against the Senators the following day. Sharpe is a very handy player and if he can stay out of foul trouble (9 fouls in two games last weekend!) then the Giants will definitely be a chance in this one. Cockburn make the annual trip east after also losing in Week 1, going down at home to East Perth despite strong games from 'Bob' and Seva. I SEE SHARPE AND FIELD CANCELLING EACH OTHER OUT OFFENSIVELY HERE, SO IT WILL BE UP TO THE LESSER LIKES FROM BOTH TEAMS TO CONTRIBUTE ENOUGH TO GET THEIR RESPECTIVE TEAMS A WIN HERE. FIRST HOME GAME OF THE YEAR IN THE 'GOORLIE ALWAYS MEANS A BIG CROWD, AND WITH THAT HOME TOWN SUPPORT I WILL PICK THE GIANTS IN AN UPSET BY 2 (I KNOW I PICKED THE COUGARS ON THE RADIO SHOW... A MAN CAN CHANGE HIS MIND HAHA)

Flames @ Geraldton
Rockingham head to the Midwest after splitting their Week 1 double header, whilst the Buccs have their first Home Game of the year in front of the Midwest Maniacs after also splitting their Week 1 double header. If Ross plays, especially given the current injury clouds over DKD & Hire, then the Buccs should have enough firepower to get the Win - But the Flames are getting closer each year to breaking their Geraldton Hoodoo! HEART SAYS FLAMES BY 2, HEAD SAYS BUCCS BY 5... WE'LL GO WITH THE HEAD ON THIS ONE BUT OBVIOUSLY HAPPY IF I'M WRONG HAHA

Magic @ South West
Well, tough start to the year for both teams but at least with Trahair's troops - it was half expected given their redevelopment phase they are going through down there with alot of young kids getting opportunities this season. The same can't be said for the Slammers however who have on paper, a very decent team that were made to look very ordinary up at the Shed in the Sticks last weekend. For Coach Catalano's sake, I hope it was just a blemish on the radar and they start to find their mojo rather quickly! ALWAYS A BIT OF FEELING IN THE SOUTHERN DERBY AND EXPECT THIS TO BE NO DIFFERENT. SLAMMERS WERE HORRIBLE LAST WEEKEND BUT THEIR ROSTER IS TOO GOOD TO NOT BOUNCE BACK IN THIS ONE. SLAMMERS IN WHAT COULD BE A VERY UGLY GAME BY 11 POINTS

Hawks @ Lakeside
So we have our first service at The Church for 2018, as the Lightning get set to host a Hawks side coming off a Friday night clash with East Perth at Headquarters. Lakeside weren't disgraced against the Redbacks on Opening Night, and will go into this clash in the familiar surrounds in South Lake pretty confident of pulling off the upset of sorts. Perry Lakes backing up will be their first major test of the season, and locking down the God Squad's scoring backcourt of Bragg and McKenzie will be high on Coach Parson's priority list. DEFINITE DANGER GAME FOR PERRY LAKES, BUT THEIR DEPTH IS A MAJOR REASON I HAVE THEM GOING SO FAR THIS SEASON - HAWKS TO GET UP IN A CLOSE ONE, DEFEATING THE LIGHTNING BY 5

Wolves @ Kalamunda
Can the Suns pull off their second upset in as many weeks as the Wolpack head up to the Hills to take on a somewhat resurrgent Suns lineup. The big question for this game is will the Suns 'no-names' step up to contain the star studded Wolves lineup with names like Salinas, Iliadis, Huntington & Billups all capable of winning a game off of their own hands. EXPECT THIS TO BE A DEFENSIVE FOCUSED GAME FROM THE WOLVES, WITH AGGRESSIVE TRAP DEFENSE AND PHYSICAL MAN ON MAN BEING THE LIKELY RECIPE FOR ETTRIDGE & CO. WOLVES TO MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW, DEFEATING THE SUNS BY 7

Tigers @ Stirling **Game Of The Week**
Dear Tigers players who love to post on forums such as this one during pre-season on how well you are going to do, and where you will be heading for post-game / success celebrations... It actually helps Blacky if you show up for games, particularly the bench players. 11 points total against the Wolves last week from your bench, and 8 of those were from young gun Luke Jackson, makes me wonder if you spend too much time on here or working on your spray tans / mole hair removal and not enough time on your jumpshot, or heaven forbid defense - seeing you did lose last week... remember that? Otherwise it will be a loss to a Stirling coach who loves to beat anyone with the surname Black and suddenly you are 0-2, likely sitting outside the Top 8 heading into Week 3... happy, happy, joy, joy! SENATORS TO TAME THE TOOTHLESS TIGERS, WINNING BY 8

Sure - the post probably could have been a little less directive, but then what would you the keyboard warrior(s) hiding behind anonymous IDs have to talk about. Jake B has me on Facebook and I'm fairly certain if the post offended him or any of the other Willo boys in any way, I would've gotten a message from him by now. They have been told for years and years by their mummy and daddy that they are so good at everything they do and if they put their mind to it they can achieve anything they want. I bet they are also the ones who get a trophy for participating although they are move value to the opposition than their own team.
Anyone who has read your previews over the last 10 years would know that the tongue is planted firmly in the cheek with your comments and any player who is a little bit offended can always contact you and sort it out, not p*ss whinge and moan behind a cloak of anonymity.

Carlwell may be deported pending a hearing next week.

Cummings is very good, had an off night, but without 2 imports Hawks are going to struggle to make the 8...

Definitely hope Carlwell gets through his hearing, because he's given a lot to the SBL, Cockburn and Perry Lakes with coaching etc, plus a wife and child here in Perth. The league is better with him in it.

It isn't the usual PR process, he either remains as a PR indefinitely or will be forced to leave. It's the final hurdle, but will go one way or the other.

So either Hawks will be left with 3 imports (they have a back up pending) or possibly 1 if they send Monroe home.

That sucks for BC, but strictly on a basketball perspective this is great news for Hawks.

They either have BC as unrestricted and get another import, or they lose him and can replace him with a higher quality import.
They obviously have been keeping him on banking on him becoming a PR.

Mandurah made a big run and had all the momentum in the 3rd and catalano left a struggling 5 on the floor with no time-out or change up in offence or defence.
Mandurah sat in a 2-3 zone all game.

Re: Catalano.. I told you so!

An opposition 7-0 run to start the 3rd qtr and 20-9 run to start the 4th is a sure sign of bad or ineffective instruction being given in the huddle.

How does a coach at this level have no idea how to bust a 2-3 zone?

They need to start looking at who isn't coaching right now and may be available to get them in there as a replacement whilst the damage can be limited. Quick affirmative action will see them still make the playoffs, they have the talent to do it. If they wait til even 0-5 it may be too late.

Catalano is doing his club a favor by coaching and stepping up when they couldn't find anyone else.

Is he up to the standard? Maybe not, but at least he is in the arena while you guys take pot shots on a online forum.

Respect that he is trying to hold down the fort til they find someone who wants to coach the team down there.

Maybe a good year to blood up younger players and build to a sustainable future.

I heard 1 or 2 applied but no one suitable applied. Lets say they gave it to someone who did apply, you would be in the same boat complaining about them not being good enough to coach SBL level.

At least with Catalano you know as soon as someone that can coach comes along he will step aside instead of trying to push a coach out or letting them go and potentially burning a bridge

What would a coach of say the Slammers get paid?

If they are based in the city its 2hours down and back 2 x nights a week plus games every 2nd weekend.

So I see how its hard to secure someone that isnt local.

Let me just say Nix was on of the highest paid in the league last year, players and coaches combined.

Just saw on basketballwa facebook page the under 18 city versus country game is at warwick. why do we not share around these events at different clubs? senators have had this year alone development and spp camps run by basketballwa, sbl blitz and grading at warwick. how much money can one club be gifted by the state governing body rather than sharing around these kind of clinics and tournaments to all clubs so they all get to have some financial gain rather than all at the same club, who it has been established use that financial gain to pay off other clubs wabl players for the purposes of getting them onto potential touring teams. its a joke and with basketballwa in their back pockets nothing will be done

Nix would have been lucky to make $5k, no way he was even near being the highest paid coach let alone including players.

whilst I agree with the sentiment that camps/blitz etc should be shared/moved around, I think that you would find it is alot more to do with court availability than being in anyones back pocket. feel free to raise your concerns with BWA of course!

btw - SPP camp last weekend was at Kalamunda and Bendat

definitely court availability would be the key factor and which clubs are prepared to give up their courts for these events!
SBL blitz and the metro v country are free entry events so not a lot of $$ made from them! I'm sure if your association gave up their courts for these events and you approached BWA to host them they would be happy to share them around.

everything BWA-related would be at BBC if they could, but BBC obviously has multiple tenants and outside clients. Warwick is no where near as user friendly for BWA - there's no way they *want* to use Warwick

Monroe was a really good fit for the Hawks. Hopefully he can get over this injury and possibly get another opportunity in the SBL.

POWER rankings after round 2....

1st - Redbacks (last week: 1st)
Seen nothing yet that would tell us they shouldn't be no.1

2nd - Senators (last week: 4th)
I had them 8th in the preseason and I'm now eating my words.

3rd - Wolves (last week: 2nd)
Clausen struggling despite the hype. Luckily Seb stuck around.

4th - Hawks (last week: 3rd)
Lost an import but we assume a replacement is lined up.

5th - Buccs (last week: 5th)
Will move into the top-4 when Ross arrives.

6th - Lightning (last week: 7th)
Batting above their weight at the moment with one import.

7th - Tigers (last week: 6th)
One starter short of being a top-4 team at the moment.

8th - Eastern Suns (last week: 8th)
A couple of thumpings brought them back to earth.

9th - Cougars (last week: 12th)
Tonight we will see if they are a top-8 team.

10th - Flames (last week: 9th)
When's the help arriving (Hire, Washington)?

11th - Eagles (last week: 11th)
I'll repeat from I said a week ago - Morse looks pretty good. not much support though.

12th - Giants (last week: 10th)
Is this the worst team if you take away the imports?

13th - Magic (last week: 13th)
Won the battle of the cellar dwellers last week.

14th - Slammers (last week: 14th)
Should be better than this.

Perry Lakes just gave Cockburn a beatdown.

Reply #681429 | Report this post

Beat down for the Magic too. Julitz scores 17 last week and comes off the bench?

Slammers won't have a chance to win another til they play Magic again. Adding a Voelkel will help but he can’t beat teams by himself.

I honestly don't think the past players or coaches of cougars hold any contempt for the organization to make any victory sweeter than another. They won a championship there and Cummins got his breakout year there. I doubt they were sitting in the locker room saying "Man we gotta beat these boys to prove a point"

What happened at the Perth v Wolves game? Was it just a case of wolves belting them early and Lako giving up? Or did they jut get beaten by a better team?

Nener didn't know what hit him last night. PL Completely shit down the cougars offense. . There was no plan B once plan A got smacked. Holmes got absolutely smoked by Purser. It was over early. PL took the foot off in the 4th otherwise it could have blown out to a 40+ pt loss. Two very differently run teams. One looked like they had scouted and had a game plan. One looked like it just showed up to have a run. That’s the difference. Cougars have some talent, but it doesn’t get used properly.

I actually think it's the other way round. Nener can coach. They don’t have the talent. It’s smoke screened talent. Field is the only talent at cockburn.

Redbacks will still be very good this year but I doubt they are a lock to go back to back. Redhage last year was 36 but coming off an NBL season and still fit and strong. While he will still be good and a handy SBL player... he could drop off significantly as he hasn't been with an NBL team all SBL off season. And now he's 37 and pent the off season travelling to commentate NBL.

Games over the next few weeks I believe will sort out the contenders from the pretenders this year...

Week 4
Wolves @ Stirling
Buccs @ Willo
Week 5
Wolves @ Gero
Week 6
Senators @ Perry Lakes
Week 7
Redbacks @ Willetton

Wolves took advantage of the lack of Vigor and Roberts. Wolves at least 10 deep this year, ran the redbacks out of steam. Don't know if it will work later in the season but the wolves showing good signs.

The wolves just played with more intensity... Ran all 10 players at them all game. It was neck and neck for the first half. I think the Redbacks just ran out of steam towards the end.

At the risk of sounding silly, can someone (Random perhaps) explain how the +/- on the SBL boxscores are calculated please? Thanks.

plus minus works as the points difference while you are on the court.
Example, say Player A starts. So the score is 0 - 0. At some stage he gets subbed out and the score might be 20-12, so he is +8. While on the bench the other team goes on a run and ties the game up at 20-20. Say he subs back on and finishes out the quarter with his team up 30-28. Player A plus/minus will be +10, even though the team is only +2.

a common mix up with the plus minus however is when a sub is made during a free throw. Say Player A is on the court and his team mate is fouled. Player A takes a seat before the first attempt. His team mate goes 2 from 2 from the free throw, technically he should get those +2 points added to his plus/minus. Problem is sometimes when the stats people make the change on the live stats those +2 goes to the go who just subbed in for him.

So take the plus/minus with a grain of salt. Sometimes its a good indicator of a players productivity on court while he isn't filling up his own personal stat line.
