Perth - fan disappointment thread

Seems with DJ and Gliddon off the table. The poor trend of not hiring established talent is becoming apparent again.

Likely to see hire walker and the rest of the crew back with a token aussie hiring from somewhere. We dont seem to be able to pick up anyone bar those who are without clubs. (Brandt, Steindl and Walker come to mind)

You have 13000 fans guys, best venue in Australia and we lose Cam to club who has a half empty stadium and propped up by an owner that wants to sell. Whats going on and why is recruiting at Perth so inept ?

- Cam - would have slotted in perfectly to allow Martin of the bench to prolong his career

Perth fans, share your disappointment here.

Ultimately, I think this is healthier for the league. Perth were in the mix this season and will be again - they've got the money and professionalism to lure someone back from Europe or get decent imports. And if they don't, then someone else can have a turn in the playoffs.

It's useful for Brisbane to get wins on the board so the NBL can extricate themselves from ownership and so they can hopefully lift their crowds.

If Perth get Kay, they will have regained a Matt Knight-type and be fine. Hawks might get decimated and not even have enough fans or expectation to start a fan disappointment thread...

Worried-no
Frustrated-yes
Its becoming a groundhog day kind of thing in Perth, silent in free agency with local talent then hype a few highlight guys out of summer league, roll them out with the same 6 locals we've had for 5 years.
We are a very happy bunch here in the West when we are winning but is anyone looking at the post Damo, Hire, Wagstaff era?

What is clear, many of the big free agents are signing multi-year deals so when cats ageing team does finally have to retire you wont find much quality available.

Short term strategy fails

Hoping for Nick Kay, if we don't manage to get him there aren't a lot of good Aussies left.
Froling and or one top level college returnee would be great we need youth on the roster.
Hoping DKD and Hire won't be back. Don't want Lucas Walker back either but have a gut feeling he will stay.

Need to get best imports possible, Cooke was a role player and Tokoto was slumping towards the end.

Ughh ... the Wildcats screw up yet again.
I don't know how much longer I can continue to be a fan of this team. All they ever do is disappoint.

Come on, it is 2 days into free agency. Is Gliddon the be all and end all, surely not! Lets not forget that Webster is out and about

I warned you all. Gleeson eroding all the goodwill the club built up. Also the club went cheap by not replacing Marvin with a real GM instead using a place holder in Troy. So of course nothing is being done.

Agreed still early days, but eerily similar to last few years with very stagnant off-season recruiting. Can be summed up as "lets see whats left in the market" approach or "who hasn't got a contract still"

Bullets out to the races.

Who do we realistically think might be coming to cats. No established players in Australia i dont think.

"Agreed still early days, but eerily similar to last few years with very stagnant off-season recruiting. "

But they were winning titles, so why would you change the formula? NZ and Perth have dominated the last decade due to roster stability.

This season was a huge wake up call that the core was no longer going to deliver. The way they played the last half of this season was woeful. The amount of home losses was not seen by the great wildcat teams of old.

You dont see serious renewal will be the same old team relying on a few stars to cover for others past their prime.

"This season was a huge wake up call that the core was no longer going to deliver."

yes I agree but the common criticism seems to be they should have been planning for this years ago. Why should they when it was a successful core?

To avoid roster like this when there is lack of young top tier talent on the books. Good teams plan for seasons ahead.

Maybe they can pick up a Vlahov type from the US. doubt it though

It will all come to naught when the Wildcats sign Prather, Norton and Kay. ;)

I wonder if they will sell the old Prather jerseys from the buyback last year at a cheap rate

"Good teams plan for seasons ahead."

Good teams also win titles, which they did. Good teams appear in 6 out of 8 GF's with the same core, which they did.

Awesome lets keep the core for another 10 years and see where that goes.

100% chance that Corey Webster won't be back at Perth. He’s in a Europe and they will need to move on.

Perth ditched Webster why would he go back there. Bad move by Cats early in last pre-season.

The main failure for Perth was Steindl "replacing" Knight and now they are stuck with him for another year. So no need for another 3 & NoD, 28yo in Gliddon.
McCarron was target #1 and missing out on him is the disappointment.
The development/young players didn't show anything of value compared to Melb, Adel and NZ's kids...
With Hire injured all season, Kenny only coming alive at the end and Walker falling apart at the end it's critical to get the support roster spots filled by someone useful.
Why worry about signing old local players that aren't delivering or getting better (DJ, Gliddon, Steindl, Hire, Walker, Kenny, Vukona)

Stiendl was such a lazy signing, "oh he's in town because his girlfriend is playing in Perth for the WNBL Lynx so let's sign him as we are now a body down" was so amateurish and pathetic.

He did also train/play for the preseason so it was someone who knew the system.

To earlier poster on "Why worry about signing old local players that aren't delivering or getting better (DJ, Gliddon, Steindl, Hire, Walker, Kenny, Vukona)"

Agreed but we dont have any australian super stars we can call in that are not free agents in the NBL now. OUr Australians are ageing veterans 1-2 years from retirement or career ending injuries like Knight. We are in a defensive mode almost, have to prop up the talent as we could be in the bottom 3rd by last years second half results.

Cats dont have luxury of a vast pool of players to start renewal process and other than Cotton havent splashed the money for top notch US imports like Boone at Melbourne. (we got the cookie monster) Our owner has got his cheque book closed it seems on giving free agents offers they cant refuse.

Prather was top $ and Ware wasn't budget either but Boone was a low cost import.

"Awesome lets keep the core for another 10 years and see where that goes."

No one said lets keep the core forever. Just saying that you are using hindsight to say the Cats should have planned ahead, but ignoring hindsight when it comes to the success they had.

"Boone was a low cost import."

Rubbish. Boone was a known quality player and I'll bet he does not come cheap. Any team in the league would have him in a heartbeat.

Any team in the league had a chance to pick up Boone, he was here for half the season before but chose not to, as far as imports go Boone was budget and just wanted to get back to Melbourne and play.

Perth has some drawbacks when it comes to recruiting. Its not necessarily about the appeal of joining a club with a winning culture, professionalism or playing in a great venue in front of huge crowds.

Some free agents, apart from better money on offer, might bypass Perth because they want to go to a club that still wants to prove itself. A chance to create new success at a club that is desperate for it, rather than one just has just had a ton of success recently.

Then you factor in cost of living, the appeal of other cities rather than living in Perth, and the appeal of not having to fly too long distances during the season, and they could be considered more appealing than playing for the Wildcats from a free agents point of view.

This isn't like AFL, or even NBA. There is no draft and there are no real equalization measures, so you don't need to build a squad for years.
And you really can't. You can only sign 11 players plus DPs.

Plus for all those rubbishing Perth's core, this is the same core that made up a third of our CG team.

I think Gliddon could have fit in well at Perth, but at this point he probably wants a high-minute starting spot, not coming off the bench.

Perth has won 3 rings in 4 years, and still made the finals, and lets be honest a 3-peat would not have been good for the league.

It will be interesting to see how the squad shapes up for next season. They had a few guys not contributing, so will be watching to see if they all get axed.

Yeah agreed #684374, I guess I see the available "older" NBL players as complimentary players not players to build around. The younger developing ones (ie McCarron, Kay) you can build around.

Don't think anyone is rubbishing the core but when a drop has comes (be it health, age, skill) for that core it's been shown we don't have the bench to step up anymore.

It's also been a while since we've acquired a quality Aussie out of college either (Wags the last one?)
