Given it would be a team paying the money, their focus is on winning games and making money. Why would they care enough where they play to overpay them?!

Mathiang already has a two-way contract with the Hornets. We've already lost him to the league.

This is a typical argument about developing players etc etc.

The NBL is a professional league that is focused on putting the best talent on the floor, to attract $ and win.

State organisations are your 'developers' with good association development, good state programs and good State leagues that promote players.

its called earning your stripes, let them go to Europe if they think its better for them, why should kids yet to do anything be paid more than those who have done the hard yards

NZ have developed most of their squad and as a result get to sign them on long term contracts at a lower cost rather than other franchises who have to lure players with lucrative contracts once they are proven commodities.

Yes let's overpay young players who are unknown commodities $200K just for the hell of it. Which as we all know is half the salary of every NBL player nowadays.

Yes Mystro that sounded very smug but when you have a formula that's shown great success I can hardly blame you mate.

I agree that we should be encouraging those with name recognition to be paid well... those with potential but only heard about on here shouldn't be given far contracts unless GM/coach/owner really wants that talent on his books

Isaac's post is spot on. The NBL is about making money and the teams want to win.

e.g., NBL is okay with overpaying USA high school graduates $100,000 to be a 4th import because it sees it as an investment to raise the profile of the league and make more money; Sydney see giving Bogut part of the business as a way to do both - increase revenue and chances of a championship.

So rephrase your question - would anyone in NBL think that paying Jock Landale/whoever $200,000 to play would get them that much back in additional income or increase their chances of winning enough to warrant it?

Humphries was highly over paid last season and produced not much and didn't bring any extras through the door. Other than 100% switched on basketball fans most people don’t even know these college guys and most are overrated. The market decides what they are worth.
