Sixers set to reveal Drmic signing

It would appear that the Drmic signature may be the next one announced soon, as their Twitter said something is on the way.

As much as I think Drmic is a complete tosser, he is a good player and a great signing for the dirty6ers

SO that pretty much closes the curtain on Teys NBL career......?

I know Drmic has been confiremd by posters in the know previously but could this be a new player signing rather than a re-signing? The twitter post makes room for one more on top of McVeigh & Froling but doesn't mention DJ who has resigned. I don't know. It doesn't make any difference to the outcome i suppose but just something i thought about.

If we do re-sign Drmic means no room for Teys which would likely rule out Motum too I would've thought.

Genuine question, is Teys the worst player to be named captain in NBL history?

Only followed the NBL for about 5ish years, but hard to imagine too many players get named captain, hardly see any court time, then the following year potentially not even be in the league.

Does it necessarily mean anything final about Teys though? They've lost Hodgson and gained Froling. Plus McVeigh as a development player. Import spots still spare as well.

Unless I'm forgetting someone, they could bring back the same imports, and the roster-bar-Hodgson and still include Teys.

Then based on his level, McVeigh either gets Teys' minutes, or cuts his teeth until next season.

On Teys, other captains that people have questioned include Tommy Greer in Melbourne and Kevin White at the Hawks. Fans get more caught up on the captain needing to play or get stats more than coaches and players.

I agree Issac. There must be a reason he is hanging around playing in the state league. Something must be in the works.

I took Teys hanging around here rather than going back to Brisbane as he usually does as more trying to impress in the local league to get another contract.

I know there was some talk about McVeigh but there was no mention in the press release of him signing as a DP although the whole Creek thing is still up in the air and I suspect we might keep an import spot free to replace Creek with if need be.

I can recall two other captains of the Sixers who were only bit players: Peter Ali and (I think) Graham Kubank. Both defensive specialists who I saw captaining the side later in their careers because they set a good example.

I hope Drmic has in fact signed and don't mind at all if Teys decides to stick around as 10th man. Hopefully Creek returns to the Sixers and gets the captaincy back though!

Isaac, McVeigh signed as a roster player. In the 36ers' media release he specifically mentions his DP experience with Townsville Crocs and how pleased he is to get a full contract.

DJ / Froling
Deng / McVeigh
Creek(?)
Sobey / Drmic
Doyle

Assuming they go with 3 imports and Creek doesn't pursue a contract overseas, no room for Teys.

I think it's a good signing by the Sixers. Drmic has actually matured and shown some form last season IMHO. Could actually be a potential captain of a club if he continues on this path. I think he would be aiming for starting status at some point soon.

We have tried Creek as captain.

I hope people remember how he had chosen to repay that trust.

'882, that was Froling who talked about Townsville and getting a pro gig.

I'd guess that if McVeigh is talking about a professional role, it's because it's a multi-year deal where perhaps only the first year is technically as a dev player on the books. I can think of reasons that they might not explicitly speak of him as a dev player in a press release, but have it that way on the formal roster.

e.g., "So, we're expecting you'll get minutes, but we're going to put you down as a development player just for the first year of the contract. That way gives us flexibility with the rest of the roster, accommodating injuries, bringing in a late import, etc. Is that OK with you?"

"Sure, whatever it takes."

They can have Drmic, keep the rest of the locals including Teys and still bring Motum in to replace Childress, for example.

Really, believe whatever you want and I don't care a great deal, just telling you what I was told by people who'd likely know, and just guessing as to why things might've played out that way.

Isaac, from what you understand or know, is the problem with Childress a salary cap issue or is it got to do with Childress himself returning to a strong team being a concern for the legaue? Or is there a new rule similar to a points system that's preventing him from returning.

All this talk of equalisation makes no sense when you see how stacked Sydney is. On top of that, they're apparently in talks with Torrey Craig & Ryan Broekoff according to Aussie Hoopla.

Hang on, i re read your response to another post when you responded to this and it was 'equity' not 'equality' that you mentioned as the problem. Just didn't read the word properly.

Peter Ali was 6th man as captain of 36ers in 1995. Observers were surprised that he wasn't in the starting 5. A young Mike Mckay was a surprise starter. At this stage of his career he was less of a bit player than Teys is currently.

Was he co-captain with Daryl Pearce in 1988? His role would have been significantly reduced by then. I think retired from NBL around 1989-1990. In between these stints Bill Jones was captain. I think Ali may have been captain of West Bearcats at some stage also.

Was Kubank (Graham?) ever captain of 36ers.

Kubank wasn't 36ers Captain

It sounds like the question over Teys is based on an AFL/ Cricket like expectation where the best player is often the Captain. This has rarely been the case for Basketball as it is a honorary position rather than a performance decision. Greer led Melbourne as another example, Ellis in Perth etc etc etc

Master Chief, I have no info and am just guessing by putting parts together but I assume that he may now have in interest in the NZ ownership and may not be able to play for another team?

Yes, 85. 1995 he may have been in the stands. He used to work for BASA.

Unless the rules have changed.

Basketball captains are allowed to ask refs for clarification of rules. Others are not permitted officially. Therefore the captain can ask a question without risking a tech.

It follows that one skill a bball captain needs is communication. If your star players can't do this, you need a good communicator and leader as captain.

"Equity" can mean a stake in ownership, or just equitable allocation or distribution of wealth/ money. So the Chill to return to 36ers equity issue could mean a few things. Maybe Isaac’s just being inscrutable or vague to confuse us.

Wait, did someone just say Childress has interest in the NZ ownership? Or did I completely read that wrong?

Yes, you read it right. I had to do a double take at first as well. I assume in addition to Marion other players are also involved in consortium?
