Melbourne sign Peter Hooley to one-year contract

Melbourne United today announced that Peter Hooley has recommitted to the Club for the 2018-19 NBL season.

Re-joining the Club on a one-year contract, Hooley played a key role in the Club's 2017-18 Championship, stepping up as a reliable option off the bench for Head Coach Dean Vickerman deep into the finals.

Averaging eight minutes per game, the young guard was called upon for big plays throughout the year, including the final play which secured Melbourne’s spot in the Grand Final when they narrowly defeated the Breakers in overtime.

Underwhelming, considering they already have Adnam.

I was impressed by Hooley's performance in Game 1 of the GF after Casper went down.

I like that he has the size and skills to play both guard spots, and I like his competitiveness and toughness. He's 25, and so hopefully will develop into a long term NBL role player.

United's roster as of right now:

Goulding
Moller
Adnam
Hooley

Plenty of work to do! Although Moller had 27 points and 20 rebounds in the SEABL on the weekend. I'm hopeful that come next season, he'll be able to consistently play like he did in those handful of very impressive games when he got the opportunity whilst Prather was out.

Based on the Aussie Hoopla site, United's roster should look something like this...

Pledger/Smith-Milner
Import/Barlow
Import/Moller
Goulding/Hooley
Import (Ware?)/Adnam

DP: Sam Short

With one Aussie spot left.

Which positions they try to cover with those import spots? Presumably a point guard, a big and a wing player/3 man. Like this season. Depending on who the last Aussie is. If Boone returns then Smith-Milner won't get many opportunities

So the import spots will really depend on who the last Aussie is.

You always sign Aussies first and then take imports to round out the roster. But, if we just assume for a second that last year's imports return.

Boone/Pledger/Smith-Milner
Barlow
Prather/Moller
Goulding/Hooley
Ware/Adnam

They'd obviously need a 4 man to round out the front court. Motum? Jois?

Essentially that would be last year's roster with Pledger replacing Majok, Smith Milner replacing Andersen, and Motum/Jois replacing Wesley.

But it all depends which Aussie is available. They have the flexibility to look for the best available Aussie player, and then sign 3 imports to fill the gaps.

Wouldn't be surprised to Trist in the mix with Jois for that spot.

Good signing for Melb I'm surprised they couldn't lock him in for longer hopefully he envisages a return back home soon. Hooley looked really good in the GF series and has gone right past Adnam now.

Hooley is 26, good signing.
Jois and Trist probably not tall enough for the 4 in the nbl, and neither would be starters ahead of Barlow.
Moller had his 27p and 20b playing the 4 spot at Hobart. Averaging 18 and 15 in four games.
Hopefully Boone comes back to combat Bogut, Ware would be good as well.

Going purely off stats, Jois and Trist need to work on their 3 point games.

If United has Pledger, Moller and potentially Boone, they need a 4 man who can spread the floor and reliably hit the open threes. Like Wesley.

Having said that, Wesley has improved his outside game over his career. It's something that players often improve after several years as professionals. It may be that Jois and Trist were physically dominant in college and were able to star without needing an outside game. But they might have the potential to improve it- eg Trist hit a few in his 2017-18 season.

Heard from reliable source that united are keeping eye on Teys in premier league and may sign him. And everyone knows that Motum will only sign with team that has Teys! Apparently money, etc is secondary.
