Game Day: Boomers v Philippines 9:30pm EST Fox Sports 505

Boomers play Philippines tonight at the 55,000 capacity Philippine Arena with tickets reportedly being sold out. It will easily be the largest crowd ever the Boomer have played in front of, even PH who usually don't play at this arena (it's owned buy a church group).

We are level with Philippines on the table with a W-L of 4-1. Wins carry over to the final group stage so there is no time to relax even though Lemanis seems to now think he is too cool for school.

Based on Friday's performance it's anyone's game tonight.

Philippines now know Australia can be beaten so they will be playing with 110% intensity which we also need to match.

If Australia run some plays inside and stop jacking up lazy threes we should be good.

Carl I do follow other basketball. Love Euro ball and read Eurobasket forum. Also don't mind South American teams like Brazil and Argentina. Aus could learn a lot from Europe but never do.

I don't care for Asian zone though because they are aimply inferior - boys trying to be men. Kind of like in FIFA too, they are simply not good enough. Sorry if that offends you.

Interesting seeing Maker in this one. At halftime, some lowlights but also some big highlights. That block on Blatche was an incredible recovery. It is exciting seeing him in a Boomers uniform and he looks promising for future Boomers teams. I hope we see Maker commit to a lot more internationals. He could really benefit from the experience and can consolidate an important role on the team.

In this team, we really need his defensive presence. We have just he and Brandt offering any solid interior defense.

Of course Kickert's response went too far. It wasn't a punch, but an elbow shove that was uncalled for. If you see the replay, it looked like Kickert responded to a nasty elbow to Goulding. Does that excuse Kickert? Of course not, eject him. Same applies to most of the Philippines team. "No wonder they reacted like that"? Really?

Players make bad aggressives responses, and it doesn't justify any tit-for-tat, or in the Philippines case, tit-tit-tit-tit-etc-for-tat.

The Philippines team escalated the situation to an absurd degree by ganging up on and pinning Goulding to the ground and throwing a chair at Sobey, but Kickert instigated the brawl. That was a fucking dog act on Kickert's part and a suspension doesn't cut it: he shouldn't be allowed to represent Australia after that shameful display.

"If he did not throw that nasty elbow there's no brawl."

Of course. The same could be said about the unsportsmanlike foul moments before by Pogoy when Goulding received a very nasty elbow himself.

If we analysing a trail of violence, then you need to look at events prior Kickert: this shows that the initiator actually should go back to Pogoy for starting it all. I'm not making this argument, by the way, but just following your logic.

It is the response by players to aggression that is important. Elbows are not uncommon in basketball. Yet we rarely see brawls like this.

PlaymakerMo

Semantics matter, that's my point: you're downplaying Kickert's involvement by labeling his act as "unwarranted" and the Philippines as "disgraceful", "terrible" etc. We ought to show Kickert as little respect as we do the Philippine players involved in escalating the brawl - it doesn't seem like you quite agree by again trying to deflect Kickert's blame onto Pogoy.

FYI it was Goulding that was piled on, not Sobey. Watching the footage I don't think Sobey did a thing: he was hit by a Philippine player just for being in Kickert's vicinity.

For example, that "Removing the Decal from the Floor" bullsh@%, what kind of cr@% is that? Coming from a supposedly first world country, that was a disgrace. Then their players nitpicking about our players crossing the half court line during the Pre-Game Warmups? How about their top scorer constantly thrash talking our players?

I know they must pay a lot the Coaches there in Australia, but a Win at All Cost or the End Justifies the Means mentality has no place in sports, there is such a thing as Sportsmanship also.

As a result of FIBA's investigation into these events and after careful consideration, the following sanctions have been handed down:

- Coach Robert Donewald Jr. is suspended with immediate effect for three official games. Donewald is also fined CHF 40,000.00. He will serve a two-year probationary period during which an exemplary and sportsmanlike behaviour shall be expected.
- Player Zhu Fangyu is suspended with immediate effect for two official games.
- Player Sun Yue is suspended with immediate effect for one official game.
- Player Zhang Bo is suspended with immediate effect for one official game.
- A fine of CHF 20,000.00 is imposed on the Chinese Basketball Association.

Additionally, the game’s three FIBA referees - Jiang Tongbiao, Jan Jun and He Luwei – were banned from nomination for official international competition for a period of one year after failing to officiate according to the letter and the spirit of the Official Rules of Basketball.

Any attempt to defend Gilas should be met with derision.

Okay, Daniel Kickert threw an elbow and deserves a ban for however long they want to ban him. And there was some "thing" about stickers that happened before the game that made them all a little pissed, but let's look at what Gilas did:

* Coach was encouraging them to fight
* They cleared their bench while Australia's stayed put
* The bashed men who weren't aggressors, 5 on 1
* Their bloody OFFICIALS who should have been trying to diffuse the situation, were throwing in opportunistic hits and chairs on men who are lucky to have walked out without serious injury
* They threw coward punches from behind guys who could not have possibly defended themselves
* And like some sort of street gang, they laughed and posed for selfies after

In short, Carl, your team lacked any of the class, humility or humanity befitting a national sporting team. Every member of your national team program acted like common thugs with complete disregard for human life, and they fucking laughed while doing it. It showed that basketball in your country lacks professionalism, class, and the scoreline showed the complete lack of skill.

But thankfully, we won;t have to read stupid comments from Filo fans everywhere about how "good" your team is, how they'll beat X or Y opponent because they've got gastro (whoops, I mean Castro?) because they won't be at the World Cup. There is NO WAY in hell that your team isn't about to be sanctioned such that you'll be able to compete. So the biggest loud mouths in world basketball will have to shut it for at least a year. Should be nice to see.

"The Boomers bench and staff were incredible staying put. There were some serious hits in there" -- Christ Anstey on Twitter.

Have to agree with that. The bench staying there following those scenes, especially with Goulding being pummeled behind the basket. Longley was great, someone who stayed cool and helped the situation and was free to do so within FIBA rules.

Meanwhile, on the other team, several Filipino bench players and support staff managed to get some hard kicks and punches to make contact. It is amazing how many Filipinos are defending it all.

According to Foxsports, this is what Romeo tweeted: "That tweet is loosely translated to: "To my fellow filipino players who say we're embarrassing. I don’t give a f***. Us teammates inside have to help. We can’t let them be on their own. If we’re embarrassing in your eyes why don’t you become an australian".

What authority does Fiba have over domestic competitions? Could FIBA suspend these guys from national comps like the Filo national comp etc?

The Boomers bench was a disgrace! The person telling them not to help should be sacked!

Aussie doesn't watch as there mates get the shit kicked out of them!

Regardless of who starts it etc the bench should have cleared to protect each other and it didn't, this shows why we lost against Japan we simply aren't united.

As its on FIBA they are much like FIFA they will give out a few small slaps of the wrist and all will be forgotten so those saying people will get long term suspensions are dreaming as FIBA have no balls on these issues.

Another ran from bench and attempted a flying punch at Dan Kickert.

Then Goulding was on the ground and support staff kicked him... another support staff threw a chair at Nathan Sobey.

Yes Kickert is a dick and deserves a hefty suspension, but anybody trying to defend the actions of the Phillipines team needs to have a look at themselves. If the Aussie bench had reacted like the Filo bench then it would've been 10 times worse again. Imagine that

Philippine coach saying that Kickert was hitting players before the game. Typical tactic by people that are clearly in the wrong. Throw mud, just like they'll now accuse CG of being racist. Aim for lowest form of accusations to deflect blame of their coach of inciting this during his timeout.

What are the precedents for this? Can't imagine a whole team/organisation being suspended for a period of time? Will be the case of a big fine for the local fed, with individual sanctions on a as-needed basis? I imagine several Australian players will also face some level of suspension?

Many things to talk about here. Firstly goulding will think twice about flopping which is a good thing for basketball because like joel selwood both players objective is try to draw a free kick or foul rather than going for the ball.

Kickert should be banned for life. If a footy player did that he would get a year suspension. Kickert should get a life ban for inciting a riot.

Other than that I don't think any other player from either team should be suspended but both national teams should be banned from competing for years I don't care who the countries are.

The phillipino officials who were fighting the aussie players should have criminal charges brought against them as well as being banned for life from basketball.

That takes care of fiba punishments but now lets look at what basketball australia will do. If our cricketers were banned for 12 months for organising to rub the ball with sandpaper then basketball australia should ban the aussie players involved for life no questions.

Lastly this is the risk you take when you go to uncivilized countries which are lawless and the people don't know the difference between right and wrong.
Countries like australia should never go to 3rd world poor countries with no laws.

Thon Maker is my hero. PH officials, so-called security and spectators were escalating the melee. Thon charged 2 piles of PH players and officials who ganged up on 2 Aust players, one on the ground behind the goal and another at the corner. In each occasion he scattered the PH pack for a moment. Given that security has completely broken down, the choices are pretty stark - either you defend your team mates against superior numbers; or stand by - be a good boy - and watch them get beaten to a pulp.

There is no way it would have been a good idea for the Aussie Bench to join in. Escalating an already bad situation could have brought the crowd into play and even more chaos. Get it in perspective. Kickett coped a solid elbow in the head in the first half by a "5 mins of fame" PH guard (some hood) who seemed to think it was quite OK to throw it out there. Kicket objected to the ref, who agreed with him and called the foul. and Kickett went on with the game. Also Goulding copped an elbow deliberating aimed at his stomach just prior to the melee. The game was physical in the first half because the PH were playing dirty. Aust coach responded in 3Q with a full court press and blew out the margin. The PH coach (who - appeared to me to be inciting thuggery in his players) could not handle it - losing so clearly in front of their home ground.

If FIBA is not FIFA then the PH BBall association should lose their hosting rights for international matches due to gross violation of security and outright incompetence. I was very, very concerned that the Aust players might not be able to get off the court without further assaults, such was the scale of breakdown in security. If we get a bullshit reply by FIBA, then BA should ignore it and not play further matches there. This might seem undiplomatic, but at the end of the day it is BA that has the duty of care towards the safety of Aust players - and they should uphold that duty.

The comments section by Gilas fans are not good evidence. There is a tendency for them to 1) immediately claim racism when being criticised, when race had never entered the discussion whatsoever, 2) find any possible reasons to excuse the violence (stickers, incidents in pre-game warmups, trash talking); 3) support and even respect the bench coming out to "support" players on court; 4) refer to Filipino culture to excuse

In my mind, the claims of racist taunts are highly dubious. There appears to be a search for trigger events to spin the preceding events into a justification for the brawl.

As for the stickers, the Australian team pulled up advertising stickers the night before, which annoyed the the court staff. This was seen to be arrogant to do so without consultation. Australia did so because they believed they were slippery and dangerous. They apologised prior to the game, and the apology was accepted prior to the game. Yet somehow now this is used as an excuse for the aggravation. When stickers are being used as an excuse, you know you don't have much, so then something like racist allegations seem to be necessary. Those allegations didn't appear for a while.

As for the Boomers bench, the support staff was helping restrain the bench. You had guys like Gliddon pleading to go to help Goulding trapped behind the basket being assaulted, literally, but were held back. The bench appeared to want to help, but the support staff acted professionally to prevent the brawl from escalating. Imagine what would have happened if the bench went out there. There were many Gilas who appeared to want to fight anyone. Look at the start when Sobey was punched by two players when he wasn't even involved. It was already madness, so anyone criticising the Australian bench for not getting involved are absolute fools.

One filo fan posted this.

A shame it went on like that and I hate that most players on both teams got involved in that, but no sympathy at all for Goulding and Kickert.

Maybe Goulding won't be talking shit and instigating bullshit like that in the future - from trash talking repeatedly and instigating conflict to being in the fetal position lying down relying on his assistant coach to protect him on the floor, basically fearing for his health there. Fake tough guy.

Kickert - maybe he isn't such a tough guy after all despite his love of throwing cheap shots and elbows against a way smaller player, running away like a scared prck. Absolute fake tough guy.

I hate that Gilas had to go down to the Australian's level and have to brawl, and the blame lies on Chot who needs to resign tonight or ASAP. But not being on the court and having to deal with a team that, even up 30, still plays overly physical and rough, almost to make a point, you can't get in the minds of the Gilas players themselves and not fully understand and thus go after their character and whatnot too much. It's just a shame the brawl went on beyond the court with fans and officials involved - that is what people ought to be focusing on and the blame goes to our officials with SBP, some fans and the security.

That's what makes this so sickening. There is no way the Australian bench would have helped the situation based on the madness that was happening. It was like street gang warfare. Longley was the hero, by the way.

In a preceding timeout, the Gilas coach was recorded saying "Hit somebody, put someone on their arse". Frustrated and humiliated, this was a team primed for combat. Look at the way the bench came onto the court. Look at their coach when it all began. No attempt to intervene nor stop his players. The Gilas coach's comments after the game also gives an indication of their psychological state.

It really is remarkable reading the comments by Gilas fans. The eagerness to condone violence, the fascination with finding an Australian trigger event to excuse the violence. There are a lot of attempts to save face. There is a very common overwhelming street gang mentality.

Goulding rubbed them the wrong way with his cockiness (and presumably also strong play on the court). A lot of focus on his trash-talking, yet nothing about what he actually said. Goulding seemed to be enjoying the hostile environment throughout the game, which probably made him more of a villain. NBL fans should know about this. No surprise that Goulding has been used in these accusations.

Lazza just released the following statement:

The Owner and Executive Chairman of the NBL Larry Kestelman has made the following statement on the incident in last night's FIBA World Cup qualifier between the Australian Boomers and Philippines in Manila.

"The NBL stands united with Basketball Australia in condemning the behaviour of players, officials and fans during the Boomers game against the Philippines in Manila last night.

“Our players need to accept responsibility for what happened on the court and any sanctions that follow. However we do not accept what happened on the sidelines when Australian players were attacked by fans and officials including a chair being thrown at one of the Boomers’ players Nathan Sobey and another player Chris Goulding set upon on the floor.

“This disgraceful behaviour needs to be dealt with by FIBA in the strongest possible manner and we will await the outcome of their investigation. We commend the restraint shown by our players and officials in the circumstances and we are working with Basketball Australia to facilitate the players’ return home in the quickest and safest way possible and protect their welfare.

“We are proud of the NBL’s well earned reputation as a family sport and we are thankful that this sort of behaviour is not a feature of Australian basketball. We have record participation levels, crowds and interest in basketball and we are committed to continuing to deliver a first class product all Australians can enjoy and be proud of."

Players lives were on the line there, goulding wouldn't be representing australia in future if he was lying in a coma now would he. But if the aussie bench players evened up the numbers it would have been safer for him. In terms of the crowd getting involved, what people are saying doesn't make sense. I'm a fan in the stands watching the game and a huge fight breaks out but i'm still in my seat watching all of a sudden I see 5 australian bench players join in that enrages me to the point where I'm going to run on to the court and start hitting players. 2) LOL fuck off back to Oceania then and lose the opportunity to build the popularity of the sport on a grassroots level by having many home games over a certain period of time

3) LOL why can't SBP file criminal charges against Kickert who launched a cheap shot, without warning and essentially without Pogoy seeing and knowing what was to come. against a player way shorter than him.

Fuck these Aussies, the arrogance was in full display ever since landing in Manila for this game. Almost as if they wanted a fight or wanted to bait these 'Fillo dogs" into something. For what, I do not know, considering both teams have been qualified, plus Gilas were by all accounts gracious guests when they played them over in Melbourne.

Sadly, the Aussies - especially poor Goulding who was not as tough of a bloke as he tries to act when talking trash and instigating conflict when lying in the fetal position on the floor basically relying on his assistant coach to protect him - will be seen as the victim here and we will be seen as the "savages" who caused a major incident alone. I am not one who likes to see people ganging up on someone, but it's also hard to muster up sympathy for Goulding in that particular case having been acting like a punk all game long.

Like I said before, Australians have a bit of a Napoleon Complex about themselves when comparing themselves to Americans, Britons, Europeans, Canadians - and they take it out on their Southeast Asian neighbors such as us and mostly Indonesia. Ask any Indonesian what their opinion of the Aussies would be and it wouldn't be nice. I guess the arrogance shouldn't be shocking to us all.

Maker looked ridiculous with his arms and legs flailing, but the only contact he made was jumping into Blatche after he and another player had just simultaneously punched Sobey to the ground. Thon deserves the ejection but that's about it imo, Sobey and Goulding both came in to break things up but neither threw a punch and don’t deserve any action either. Kickert was similar to the Childress incident and probably deserves extra suspension on top for how far it escalated. I don’t think I saw a single punch throw by an Aussie other than Kickert and makers air swing.

Missed the game last night, just watched the replay now, why was Goulding and Sobey ejected, neither even threw a punch, Sobey ended up with an entire gang beating the crap out of him, how does that work.
Agree Kikart and Maker should have been ejected, Kikart in particular, Maker really was simply trying to get three players off one when he first jumped in, then Romeo gave him the cowards hit to the back of the head.
The Philippines should be thrown out of FIBA, the coach charged with inciting violence , the time out he clearly stateted, "hit them hard .,put them on their ass, “absolutely disgusting thug mentality from a team filled with immature scrappers.

And the Philippines should not be permitted to hold another international tournament again, disgraceful all round

What are people's thoughts on which Boomers should be penalised?

Definitely Kickert for the strike. Should he also be penalised for connecting on punches while Gilas players were charging him? He had a defensive fighting stance throughout as opposition players charged him and attempted and connected on several punches.

Maker involvement was very brief in the first few seconds: 1) he launched himself into the group of several Filipino players who had pounced on Goulding; 2) he launched a targeted kick at Romeo after Romeo punched him in the head from behind. He then backed away from the scene with 3 other Australian players. Later, when he noticed that Goulding was still down, he went towards the action but didn't seem to get involved in anything else.

Was Maker actually attempting to be a peacemaker with that clear-out charge/kick, justifiably defending his teammates, or was he provoking further violence? IMO, probably all three.

Sobey's stance in the first moments appeared to be trying to break up the violence, but was hit multiple times to the head by three separate players. He then shoved a Filipino bench player away with his feet while he was on the floor. I can't even find where Sobey's actions warranted ejection.

As for Goulding, we can't even see him as there is a crowd of Filipino players and staff laying into him. Also can't find ejection-worthy involvement from him. Anyone see it? Or is being the subject of violence enough to be considered being involved in the fight?

What is the recommended course of action for players when ganged up like that? What should players do when teammates are literally being repeatedly assaulted on floor?

Re Claims: There are plenty of cameras around, until footage comes out otherwise, treat the coach's claims about Kickert pushing their players during warmups as mad and madeup rantings. Racism claims, again without proof are mad rantings.

Filipinos don't seem to get this point, but even if either mad ranting came to be of truth, it provides zero justification for coward punches and thuggery displayed.

Working on what we DID see:

Kickert: Dropped a guy with the forearm, it's within the realms of behaviour you see in basketball through NBL to NBA. Kickert should not be blamed for Philippines totally disproportionate behaviour. Even doing something dirty, you don't expect the entire Filipino team act as disgracefully as occurred - that behaviour is solely on them.

Ejection was right, a 3-4 game ban for the arm drop and the fighting behaviour is more than sufficent.

Goulding: The annoying flop aside, cannot be blamed for fighting if he's locked on the floor being kicked and punched. Impossible to expect him to somehow break free and avoid the fight.

Ejection was wrong, should not receive punishment. Wouldn't surprise me if he gets a fine for the sheer fact he was part of the fight. If he got a ban, that would be very wrong.

Sobey: Clearly acted to split up the fight, didn't engage much. Ejection was wrong, should not receive punishment.

Maker: Acted like an idiot jumping into people's backs and making air kicks. Didn't connect - thankfully.

Ejection was correct, fine for fighting behaviour reasonable. Borderline on any suspension, if he had connected on a kick it would be a very different story. Wouldn't surprise me if handed down a harsh 1-2 game suspension.

Fan/Official who punched Sobey: Ban for life from Basketball; Criminal proceedings for assault.

Fan/Official who threw chair at Sobey: Ban for life from Basketball, perhaps Criminal proceedings for assault.

Filipino players who engaged with punches towards players heads, kicking or locking Goulding down to the floor: Full year ban & fine.

Filipino Coach: Apology, fine, banned for 2 years from coaching basketball & sacked.

This gets worse and worse as we hear more details. Goulding's agent claimed that an assistant coach got involved using a chair! "The assistant coach grabs a chair and pummels it down on his head while multiple cowards stomp on him." Players fighting is one thing, but coaching staff and support staff too? Atrocious behaviour. This suggests a team-wide punishment is required.

Not condoning any of the following actions whatsoever, but the nature of these things is that "justice" has to be seen to be done and he's going to be the sacrificial lamb that gets wiped out to justify what happens to the Filos

BA chief denies the claim that Kickert was hitting players in the warm-ups. Not surprising as it did seem implausible.

"Filipino coach Chot Reyes alleged after the match that Australian players had been hitting opposition players during the warm-up.

"We absolutely [deny] that," Moore said."

I wouldn't be surprised if the coach is making up stories to not only try to excuse the fight, but also incite hatred of the Australian team. Vilifying the opposition helps him gain support.

@Carl, I think you are missing the point of 'justification' for the seriousness of some people's actions here?

Anyone who has any objective view of this incident based on what we know and have observed so far agrees that Kickert has a serious case to answer and will likely be sanctioned for his over-reaction and seemingly reckless strike. What possessed him to react this way, rather than not go over and help Goulding up from the court is difficult to comprehend. It will probably come out in time, but it cannot be reasonably justified in the circumstances presented thus far.

Then there are a number of extremely violent, potentially life threatening and serious incidents, of which it appears many players wearing blue (and their associated officials/other representatives) are the perpetrators of and some players wearing yellow the victims.

It is acknowledged widely in the public media that Goulding has a flopping issue (he isn't alone here) and something has obviously triggered a clash between him and No.16 in blue. But what triggered the incident where he was at the bottom of a pile of opposition players/others being pummeled, punched and kicked, how can this be justified?

It has also been acknowledged by those being objective in what they have seen so far that Maker, while not seemingly connecting with his wild kicking motions, did appear to jump carelessly/recklessly into a pack of players and once again will likely be dealt with accordingly. Hard to justify that action, but some appear to think his primary objective was to defend, after his initial jump, maybe he was?

Sobey appears to have only one thing in mind, try to defuse the situation and protect himself and his team mates, but how on earth can someone justify the way he was punched to the face and hit from behind by a chair for goodness sake?

Other than coming up with excuses or justifications for hating Aussies because of your (and others) perception of arrogance, confidence/cockiness, alleged on court trash talking or disrespect and accepting that we also do not condone this type of violence from any player, what is your problem exactly?

During warmups, while both teams were running through their respective layup lines, a Filipino player is seen putting his leg out to trip Daniel Kickert. Kickert then turns and pushes a different Filipino player, before both teams came face-to-face, and had to be separated.

The incident appears to be among the things that helped ignite what ended up being a violent third-quarter brawl, where 13 players were ejected.

I know there have been more than 450 posts to this thread but as 300 of them have been from Carl I don't think it has been done to death yet.

Haven't been able to watch the incident again from last night until now but I would like to apologise to Chris Goulding for calling what he did a flop. Although he sold it a little he was hit hard and high so I don't consider what he did unreasonable and I don't attribute any blame to him.

Kickert definitely went too far with his reaction but his record speaks for itself so this was probably out of character for him. Still a big mistake.

For the record Cadee went in and defended Sobey who was trying to stop things from escalating. Maker was in there helping and defending his team mates also.

While some of the actions of the Filipino players were really bad the most serious infraction is that of the team and stadium officials. Their role in such an incident is to quell the melee. It is accepted that adrenaline will get the better of the players at times but the officials don't have that as an excuse.

Those officials should receive the most serious penalties followed by the players who went too far and that includes Kickert.

All I'm trying to point out here is. We are talking like we are the victim's yet we all know how kickert and goulding play. They hosted a lot of different countries even powerhouse Euro teams. Rugged tough new zealand and their mortal enemies china but no brawl what so ever. Just maybe it says something about us. Our attitude. Just like anon is showing. Mate they have vids I saw one it's clear that kickert is doing nasty stuffs pregame. Yes there was a kick but after how many times kickert push them in the warm ups. Goulding is a different story. Let's talk again after the fiba sanction. And you will see our so called players are not what you think they are playing the victims. (I played Div 1 so got a lot of contacts and access to vids.) Peace out anon. Haha.

My big concern about this is the toxic vilification campaign throughout Filipino media and social media against the Australian national team. There is campaign to smear the team in various ways, from "racism" to "vandalism" to "disrespect" to other kinds of provocation. We would of course have a totally different team by 2023, but the seeds of animosity have been laid in this incident. There is strong tribalism on display, so even with different players, it doesn't matter. Perhaps it is a very vocal minority, but there seems to be very little acknowledgment of wrongdoing, with various provocations listed is an excuse or reason for mob violence. Very few Filipinos are critical of Filipino violence, and when they are, there is a harsh backlash against them. It may be the saving face culture creeping in, but it has gone beyond defending themselves. The vitriol of the campaign against the Aussies is shocking. It has even included death threats to people criticising the Gilas role in the violence. I would be seriously concerned as a player going to Philippines again.

The Filipino team not showing any remorse is probably not going to play well for them when FIBA lays the smack down on players involved. There's a good chance that their coaching staff and majority of their team will face multi game suspensions. If that eventuates it’s very possible they may not even qualify for the World Cup. Boomers can easily cover Kickert, Sobey and Goulding and Maker.

I don’t think the Filipino team or fans realise just how much shite they are in.

Disagree entirely. Where the points will come from is a question. We also dont have a good enough pick and pop guy to replace Kickert - and Lemanis will not use Johnson. We will have to find a way to fill the gap, and Iran can potentially beat us if we don't have those four. I'd hope that only Kickert gets suspended.

All up, it's a pretty tawdry affair, by players from both sides, and commentators. Australia already has an international reputation as a pretty bad sporting nation. Bad in the sense of our behaviour. This latest incident doesn’t do much to dissuade the world of that notion. More importantly, it looks like we’ll miss another opportunity internally to have a reasonable discussion about the behaviour of our sporting icons.

As if they don't have players to fill those 9 spots. It's a blessing in disguise for them. They want the coach out since 2013 not they got a chance.

The only comment I'd like to make about that brawl, all despicability aside, is that it typically doesn't arise from just one thing. The offensive foul on Goulding followed by the Kickert elbow were certainly the triggers but this had been building up for some time. This was not normal from either team / nation and my prediction is that FIBA will come down hard on both teams. Given the footage I'd estimate the blame will be apportioned 60-40 Phil - Aus.

60-40 turn it up. 60-40 up (or 50-50) to the Kickert foul. But after that the main issue - the brawl - is 100% on the Philippines team. ABSOLUTELY NO JUSTIFICATION FOR THAT CONFLAGRATION. NONE.

Honestly I quite liked and respected the Gilas team up until that game. Though i didnt like the punk, above it all attitude that some of their players manifested on court at times - Pogoy, Wright, Blatche, and the absent Abueva being the worst offenders.

This occurrence though unfortunate doesn't surprise me - given some of the warning signs seen in their on court behaviour.

What happened (i think) is that they saw Japan beat Australia and they thought they had a real chance to do the same at home no less - then when reality struck, that they were still manifestly inferior - given some incitement they just lost their minds. End of story.

A lot of what is being said in the media and on forums is reactionary and full of passion, some a bit nationalistic and some just outright racist or subjective in the eye of the beholder but some also dealing with facts and common sense thankfully.

I would like BA especially to start dealing with any issues that come to light in regards to character, the reports of a clash in cultural differences, misunderstandings and perceptions of disrespect which seem to have gotten well and truly out of hand in the build up and have likely been a contributing factor in the resulting affray.

Not making excuses or looking for anything that must be done to be seen in a lighter manner, just saying that it is obvious that with more coming out and in the days to come we will start to understand that there are real leadership/cultural/sportsmanship issues that may need to be addressed within the Australian international sport.

I am not concerned with other countries, they need to address their own issues, I am concerned with real investigation and real solutions to any underlying problems we may have in light of what is going on in the world today which our country in some ways is getting sucked into.

Only interested in those who understand what I am referring to, no dick heads please...

What was Kickert thinking? Way out of character. Regardless of Goulding or pregame, that was bad. But it should have ended there. Maybe had a heated confrontation between all players, with a bit of push and shove, and that's it. Kickert gets ejected, the other players get a stern talking to. Move on.

I have a lot of time for the Philippines and it’s people, but the behaviour we saw was despicable and has no place anywhere. That was extreme violence and worse than the Pacers and Detroit because of the way everyone got involved and how after the event many were celebrating and gleeful. Sickening.

The Australian bench showed incredible restraint.

New video emerging of Goulding during the game doing what Goulding does - initiating contact and then bitching about it. He headbutt one of their shoulders while another Filo was on the freethrow line. He tried to barrel through a few players and pretend it was an accident. The Filos showed this and I can';t help but think they have a point. He was doing the underhanded things he always does and this time he got absolutely walloped for it. Did he deserve what he got? No. But I am not sure it is as clean cut as Gilas bad, Boomers good. However, of course when you look at the severity of what the Gilas did, they have brought their basketball nation into disrepute. But I think an argument could be made for multiple game suspension for Goulding, banning for Kickert and the banning of Gilas for up to a year.

What is worse is that no one from the Philippines thinks they have done anything wrong judging by the gloating on social media and the "selfie" the team took court side and their statements to the media. Their accusations of racism and violence before tip off are nothing more than a weak attempt to justify their appalling behavior.
The Coaching Staff and Support Staff deserve the book thrown at them for their conduct and shouldn't have the privilege to have anything to be involved with Basketball again ever and the Players involved deserve every sanction (Kickert included).

https://www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/basketball/gilas-pilipinas/206479-sbp-al-panlilio-prepares-for-sanctions-fiba-brawl-philippines-australia

FIBA's disciplinary panel already notified SBP on Tuesday night, July 3. The letter contained incident reports from the referees and technical committee, as well as a request for SBP to submit all materials to support its statements.

"We're hoping we’ll be able to present our case to FIBA. We’ll be given some time to do that and submit our own statement, videos and evidences to show our cause. I’m sure they’re asking for the same from the Australian federation then give it to FIBA and await for the decision," explained Panlilio.

The Australian and Philippine basketball federations have a week to submit the materials to FIBA, which will release its decision during the tribunal held at the end of the qualifying window.

"The tribunal will take a look at both sides and also their own assessment. I'm glad they [gave] us this opportunity because again we will present the whole context not only the 4:01 mark of the 3rd quarter," added Panlilio.

Can't believe more people didnt do that though tbh. A few months ago we had an incident in a social game where an opposition player went after one of our players who was half his size (took some swings, put him in head locks, etc). My instinct was to just get between the players and separate it. I still can't believe the barbaric instinct of 90% of the Filo players to run in and smash a few blokes.

Boti's article is an interesting point of view, while I think he isn't wrong with most of what he has written so far, it is an objective and impartial review by FIBA that we are all wanting I believe. But also a decision that makes some impact on the world stage, because like it or not, this is world stage stuff...

I tend to agree with Boti's assessment too. Kickert's initial actions should be judged in isolation, not given further weight by the outrageous response by the Filipino team that followed it.

I'd like to know what weight FIBA places on provocation and retaliation, which will be the Gilas main argument for brawling. I would also like to know how FIBA treats intent to harm versus actual harm (for example, Maker's flying kick seemed to be intended to hit Romeo, but he missed). There is also the question whether violence to break up the brawl is more excusable (again, Maker appears to be aiming for this in his first clearing strike).

Is provocation and acts of retaliation any excuse whatsoever? Is intent as serious as actual harm? Is violence partially excused if the intent was to prevent others from assaulting a teammate?

From what I have seen on Filipino media and social media, I suspect Filipino fans and Australian fans will answer these questions very differently, with FIBA acting closer to the Australian assessment.

I don't know or care what biased boti wrote about the incident but I do agree that Kickert actions should be judged in isolation. In isolation his actions were unwarranted and thuggish and he deserves a substantial suspension.

BA should be suspending Kickert, not FIBA. He embarrassed the sport and the nation.

"Embarrassed the nation"... what BS. Committed a dumb foul, but it would barely have made a single ripple if not for the unbelievably disproportionate response by the Philippines.

Angus, he committed the idiotic foul, overreacted in the pre-game lay-up line, taunted then guys chasing him after they stopped (while Goulding was getting pummelled), and flipped the bird at the crowd ant the end. That isn't what you do when you represent your country.

Love the patriotism, but time to take off the blinkers and prepare for sanctions.

General rule of thumb is that you penalise both teams and all players participating in a Melee.

You can't argue Australians were only acting in self-defence, when Kickert sparked the whole thing.
And Longley won't escape either. Again, you can't proclaim him a hero whilst castigating Philippines officials for getting involved.

FIBA will start with Kickert and penalise everyone who got involved from that point on. Depending on evidence, there may be harsher penalties for particularly egregious behaviour.

Good guess AD. Nice try.
Kickert sparked the whole thing. Please show us where, there is enough video footage about.
Longley did exactly what wrong? Maybe he will get a warning for being on the court. That's all.

Anon still doesn't want to hear things like that AD. He wants our players to go scratch free. Hell if there's no video that kickert was caught doing some mma move he will said he's innocent.

Lmao longley literally just went and stood there, it's not like he came in swinging and throwing chairs. Longley will be completely fine.

Apart from Kickerts initial strike, the physicality from Kickert/Thon was self defense. The Other Aussies didn't do anything.

Coaches and assistant coaches are allowed to enter the court to stop fights. Longley did nothing but try and restore calm. He will be fine. Unlike the Gilas assistant coach who apologised on twitter for hitting Goulding with a chair. One is in serious trouble...one is not!

their reputation precedes them. i think this will show other asian teams do not let be pushed around. if australia keeps on doing these things, wherever they play in asia they might see a fight, if the small filipinos can defend themselves why we cant. for sure once they play here again they will remember what happened last time and tread very very very carefully

Because one hand picked comment from a Lebanese forums means anything right? I think you will find that anyone out there that matters would be disappointed in both teams and totally and utterly disgusted at the Filipino teams actions. Either way there's only one opinion that truly matters in all this and that’s FIBA.

If we go by comments in other forums and on YouTube, there is a strong sense of an inferiority complex. A lot of claims that Australians are racist, often relying on unsubstantiated trash-talk rumours, plus plenty of racist jibes too, focusing on a perception that 'whites' view themselves as superior. Never mind Australian multiculturalism. Perhaps also can be explained by a racially-based inferiority complex. Combine all that with blind nationalism, claims that the culture considers trash-talk as highly disrespectful, a culture that apparently considers the removal of advertising stickers as a great sign of disrespect, and a save face culture that will try to shift blame away from the Philippines team, it is a cocktail that has generated great hatred against the the Australian team and Australians generally. The ramifications of this will go beyond the current Boomers playing group.

If the trash-talking issue is genuinely true, it is going to be interesting to see how other teams handle this information. Will they be more culturally sensitive, or will they use it against the Philippines team? It has exposed the Philippines team as being sensitive to something that is common in basketball. Other teams may want to put them off their game by riling them up with some trash-talk.

When the game became 5 vs 3, how about this as an idea to stop it from becoming a total farce as it did: Lemanis instructs two players to stay off, making it a competitive 3 vs 3. Perhaps the Boomers also wanted to leave sooner after the debacle, but at least this idea would've made it a bit more interesting competitively when play resumed.

Neither side was really playing properly, both just wanted to leave asap I reckon. Even if you ignore all the commotion that went on and the circumstances that led to it, no ones gunna wanna risk getting injured in some pisstake 5v3 or 3v3. It's a joke they let it continue.

Carl, I have ready plenty of comments from the Asian community that contradict your statement. Opinions will differ on alignment. Both teams have to accept responsibility for their part in bringing the game into disrepute. The " they started first" argument is pretty pathetic. Even taking into consideration Kickerts actions, it's absolutely no justification for what most of the Filipino team and associates responded with. The whole sticker, racist propaganda is just nonsense.

I told you let's wait for fiba. If they can really prove the there are some racist rants from our players goodluck to us. But surely the one who throws the chair and the sucker punch should be ban in any fiba event. Also the assistant coach must be ban forever. All the players involved on both sides at least 2 to 10 games. Carl. :)

It is an interesting issue re: the stickers. On one hand you have PH officials suggesting it is close to desecration. OK, I accept that. Boomers staff did the wrong thing by taking matters into their own hands. However, I sincerely doubt Boomers staff removed the offending court advertising out of spite. Most of the gents in the Boomers squad have played on courts in many countries far and wide (I imagine)... could it be that the stickers WERE in fact slippery and a legit danger? Had any games been held with those stickers intact?

Just curious.

From what I have seen, Luc and Rike (and maybe Delly who by the vision was exceptionally keen to join the fray from the bench) are the only people in this whole debacle who can hold their heads up.

@Dave, agree that it wouldn'thave been out of spite, below is from an article on it:

Moore said Basketball Australia later apologised to the Philippines Basketball Association.

"We had a team shootaround the day before, floor decals are always something that you look at," he said.

"We trained, had numerous players fall and fall heavily and our team management undertook a course of action that we actually apologised for. We ripped the decals up.

"That wasn't the smartest move we made.

"There's no doubt that heightened the issue, but that was more from an administrator, federation-to-federation part as opposed to players."
