Is there some provision in the NBA by-laws that state Lebron cannot go to LA?

It's not rigged, but it's certainly getting less interesting with every passing year.

In 2016, the number of contending teams was reduced by 1, as Durant moved to Warriors.

Spurs with a healthy Kawhi were a contender. As were the Cavs.

LA are a serious team, assuming they actually do land Kawhi. Again the number of genuine contending teams has reduced by 1.

Not sure what but the NBA needs to do something. We'll start next season with only 4 or 5 genuine teams. And it could yet fall as low as 2 if Rockets can't re sign Capela and if Philly can't add the right pieces or if Simmons doesn't come along.

Right now you have 2 teams who are undoubtedly serious teams with a real chance. Warriors and Celtics.

What exactly is the point of the regular season? What a snore fest this league will become for 10 of the 12 months of the year.

Undoubtedly it's rigged as they try and help their biggest markets but LeBron to LA was his choice.

They will fix up the Knicks soon but they will be happy that their big markets (outside of NY and Chicago) being contenders but there is just WAY too many we can't trust.

As for NBA bringing back my Seattle Supersonics, I don't ever think that will happen again

Pretty unfair to list the Celtics as serious contenders and leave the Rockets off the list, LV.

But I agree with you overall in that the regular season is a complete waste of time. The Warriors made that very clear this year where they really only won the number of regular season games that they won by the accident of being too good to lose them. Then played in a different gear in the playoffs. Until they feel like they need home court to win a championship, the regular season isn't worth watching.

Rockets just lost Ariza and have not yet re-signed Capela.

With Paul, Harden, Anderson on big contracts they won't have the cap space to pull a big free agent. Unless they could shift Anderson's contract.

If they re-sign Capela they'll be a contender. Without him, it's hard to say for sure but I don't like their chances of putting together a team who could win a championship.

Even if you include them that's only 3 teams. Plus LA, assuming they land another big fish or 2.

The good old days you had 6-7 serious contenders every year.

The problem with the league lies with the salary cap/luxury tax scheme IMO.

From 2015-16 to 2016-17, the salary cap jumped from $70m to $94m. Yet it took more than 10 years for the cap to raise an equivalent amount ($24m) before this.

This has facilitated 'super teams' even more.

The luxury tax also means that super teams are happy to spend - knowing that the extra merchandise, extra sponsors, TV games etc. will pay most of it back. ala Warriors.

IMO, the only way the disparity gets resolved is with a hard cap - though the players union will never agree to it.

Thing is under the current situation - you're expecting teams who spend $85m, $90m, $100m to compete with those spending $140m a season.

It's a whole $40-55m more - it's not necessarily rocket science why so many teams aren't contenders.
