Jackson second in MVP

AAP News reports

Houston Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes has beaten Australian centre Lauren Jackson by two votes in the closest-ever balloting for the WNBA Most Valuable Player award.

Swoopes received 327 points to Seattle star Jackson's 325, with the Aussie polling 20 first-place votes to 16 for Swoopes from United States reporters and broadcasters.

Both players were awarded 15 second-place votes but Swoopes received seven third-place and nine fourth-place ballots, while Jackson managed just one third, three fourth and six fifth-place votes.

The pole is set up with each voter selecting their top five players, with number one earning 10 points, seven for second, five for third, three for fourth and one for fifth.

It was Swoopes' third MVP crown, having won the award previously in 2000 and 2002.
