Whitcomb replaces Mitchell

Seattle Storm and Perth Lynx star Sami Whitcomb has been added to the Opals team for the 2018 FIBA World Cup for women that tips off in Tenerife, Spain on 22 September to replace the injured Leilani Mitchell.

Whitcomb, whose Storm are just 1 win away from capturing the 2018 WNBA Championship, will join the team following the conclusion of her WNBA commitments.

Much more potential to put points on the board now.
Our guard depth is so terrible. Real shame Wallace is injured.

Got lit up by the sg johannes in the first game against France and then laksa did the same for Latvia. Sami at least plays some defense.

Come Olympics, I don't see Mitchell, Mansfield or Madgen getting back in.

Not at 35y.o...
Guaranteed won't be there.

Wallace, Ebzery, Whitcomb, Ohea and one TBD in the backcourt.
Few 22-26y.o guards around that show promise.

Whitcomb plays defence? If you call running around and getting the odd steal but never containing anyone defence then I guess so

Hard to say for certain due to limited minutes but I feel like her D has improved over the course of this season.

How long is a while? 1 year?

Whitcomb will be 32 in 2020. Even that's getting up there in age.
Mitchell 35y.o and Griffin 33y.o.
You don't see hurst getting a shot at 35 or wilson at 33.

No doubt they will play wnbl for a few more years but I think they will be overrun by youth within the next 2-3 years.

in the 1/2 position some young ones that will still be un25 in 2020 waiting in the wings

Wallace
Antoniado
Rocci
Shelley
Conti
Tupaea(though shes injury prone)
cant think of any more but Im sure they are out there just not in my memory of former national squad juniors

under 30 in 2020 you still have the likes of
Lavey
Clydesdale
Mansfield
Seekamp
Panousis
Cole

and Im sure a few more will develop ,look at Whitcomb, she really didnt stand out till she was mid twenties, until then she was almost an also ran. Kelly Wilson has probably just had her best season yet and shes 30

though will say it makes a change to have so many young talls coming through

95 5'7 F.Nakkasoglu PG (Currently with Turkey NT) dont think she can represent Aus as think shes already assigned to turkey

whats a CG... also forgot Mareena Whittle why shes is always over looked beats me, such a good all round player she a good small forward/sg

Wallace isnt 5'11 , shes same size as Antoniado another guard missing from your list, seems plenty of names, it will depend on who actually develops into the court leader they need to replace the likes of Mitchel and her predecessor Harrower, hopefully they can find one amongst all those players

A cg is a combo guard. Can play both pg and sg.
Antoniadou isn't even in the mix anymore. Not listed for any wnbl team this year.

Antoniado is currently in Europe from what I was told, not sure if its a sabbatical or playing which would explain no WNBL I know rangers wanted her to play, thats was the info that floated out early on, certainly wouldnt discount her from the mix at all, but yes shes been quiet

also need to add Horvat and Maley into the mix for s/f two very good players both at college currently but will be back in year or two.
Nicholson is one to watch, think shes only just getting going.

The college forwards I left out. Hard to make a call on them just yet.
I'd say Sharp looks better than Horvat, Bibby and Maley early on. Could be the extra year under her belt and the weaker conference.

Bibby is more of an undersized pf, playing underneath a top 3 draft pick centre.
Maley transferred from Oregon to tcu. Looks to be struggling transitioning from a vic state team pf to a college sf.
Horvat should get more minutes at ucla in her sophomore season.

forgot about Bibby and there is also Pizzey, when you think about it lots coming through,it will all depend on who steps up really ,its anyone's game, but Australia certainly isn't short for choices over the coming years

Yeah without massive improvement, we may not see pizzey stay in the wnbl.
Same goes for a lot of other young signings.

25-30 Girls a year going to the NCAA now. Some of those players will get a shot at the wnbl when they come home. Players that aren't up to scratch in the wnbl will be much easier to replace with so many girls now going to big schools.

If you look at the senior season in college this year,
A few quality Aussies that could play wnbl.
Smith, Froling, Woods, Brown, Brewster, Nakkasoglu.
Every year from then on more quality prospects become available.

Hopefully the AFL have shown enough contempt to the WAFL one year in that the experiment is over in some ways, and only the girls that truly love footy will leave

AFL are far from finished with the WAFL
They are adding more teams each season over the next three years so that every AFL team has a women's team also
That’s not a sport that has no future , that’s one that’s just getting going
They are scouting potential recruits from women’s elite sports now and the incentive for the short season( which will be increased when more teams are added) and decent money is going to sway players.

So many young girls playing AFL that they will no longer need to take elite athletes from other sports. Atm, got to be at least 30 girls from different sports in the aflw.
The biggest problem going forward is the length of the AFLw season...

If they choose to extend the season by starting in january, other players from different sports will have to decide between playing afl and playing there other chosen sport.

Players like Conti will have to choose between one or the other and in a few years time, the afl salary will likely be 3 times the wnbl salary.
