WA SBL - Oct

The goldfields giants and s/w slammers have been very quiet since there seasons ended. the giants in particular are always on the front foot with there signings and have been very public about them.
whats happening with both of these clubs .
NO coaches and NO signings .

Giants are defo in some trouble off court and nearly half way through October, dragging their feet with advertising for head coach.

Havent really had much success with attracting/retaining Oz players let alone coaches - assumptions would be that would have appointed coaches locally and concentrated efforts on recruitment.

Hope im wrong but sad how such a proud club has gone through such a tough few years with no signs of improvement, again based on outsider looking in.

Earnest Ross to Joondalup. Seems Ben Ettridge has pulled out his immigration map like he complained about at the start of the year. Spent all year having a sook about it.

http://sbl.asn.au/2018/04/13/mens-sbl-preview-week-5/

Have a read of how smug and ridiculous this article is and then see what he's just done to the Buccs. Poaching players and paying big money to get them down to Joondalup. But yeah all his players are home grown.

I am really getting worried about the South West Slammers ability to field a team next season. Rumour had Teny Puot returning but don't think that will happening and they look like losing Durnin, Voelkel and Thompson at the very least. Any other rumours of signings or re-signings for that club???

Slammers need a coach!

they threw everything at getting Utley but missed out.

players find it hard to commit to playing for a club not knowing who the coach will be

they are essentially back to the pre-Ty Harrelson era where they won 1 game in approx 3 seasons

HAHA this is gold!

Lets be honest Ettridge (Ben Dover) has no integrity at all.

He has not developed one player at all.

Reece Maxwell who is a hell of a kid, deserves a championship but wont get it under ego, or ben-dover, Maxy deserves better.

The GF's he has lost when odds on favourite is hilarious.
Choke once, choke twice, but not a third.

Classic Ben Dover.

Let me have a go.

Kalamunda (Davis, Timms)
Cockburn (Steph Jones, Priestley, Gandini, Chan)
East Perth (Davis, Easley, Tawhiti, Anthony)
Stirling (Kisha Lee)
Hawks (Holmen, Thomas, Cassir)

Giants have made some positive strides in the last few years fielding men's and women’s division one sides, but they are still struggling big tome on the court. They will be onto their sixth coach in the last seven years and have only been able to get a handful of Perth players up in that time. Very sad times. A good Kalgoorlie team makes for a better league

Why is Palkert mentioned there? He didn't rip the league up but he was very solid. 20/10 and led the league in blocks at 2.5 a game.... Consistent outside shooter at 6"10.

Men's SBL Budgets based purely on not very much at all aside from being the best fictitious journalistic endeavour this side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Joondalup $100000
Coach Ettridge commands $20000 for his expert services of being the most grounded, in-touch coach in the League. Then there are the payments for club veterans Salinas, Iliadis & Huntington who are Joondalup 'born and bred', each receiving approximately $500 per week. So $1500 per week x 22 week season puts us around the 30k mark; Earnest Ross has just signed on for the mates rates price of $1200 per week, which is a bargain for such a team oriented, wins above stats star that he is. So that is another 25k in the bank and its easy to see why the Wolves are the most professional run club in the league when they have to somehow account for all these funds and remain below the SBL threshold.
Perth $90000
Coach Lackovic is on 30k per year, mainly for the latest hair products, top of the line man bags and some health supplements because lets face it, who needs to actually invest in knowledge on how to beat zones and things of that nature when you have Shawn Redhage on 25k for the season when he's not creating awkward moments on Wildcats commentary trying to prove he has a sense of humour versus Homicide? Then you have Vigor on 20k plus business class flights to England at the end of each season as well as the 10k for subscription service to Maori Ballers Anonymous, which leaves approx 5k to pay whoever feels like playing all season then sitting on the bench all finals to get knocked out in the quarters or semis

Rest of the League $300000 give or take a few thou depending on how many Oceania/Unrestricted NBL players the Slammers, Buccs, Giants & Flames can find.

"Cockburn is where basketball careers go to die"

Name one?

Cockburn operates on 10-30% budget of other clubs.
Its an absolute credit they get done what they do with out the budget.

If they had 2 x imports for the last 15yrs like everyone else (even playing field) they likely win half that in championships.
On average they have had the bets locals over that time.

Look at that stats when they have 2 x imports, its actually incredible.

They are facts.

Cockburn work on half the budget? If only they got two imports? What are you on about? Cockburn have had two imports many times. They are often duds in the recent years which is the problem. The years they actually get good imports they are some of the best in the league.

You made the comment about the best locals. Who? Gavin Field! who else? If Cockburn work on 10-30% of the budget of other clubs, then perhaps that is a very good sign to poor management and leadership from the top > downwards.

You can't use that as an excuse forever, it is not a positive. If your club is not financially stable then thats on the management.

Development can be tricky to judge. Wolves have developed some and have def poached players. Willetton too. Redbacks too. But sometimes, you want a title.

Redbacks for example had a visible and successful junior development pathway under Harris and became a strong club on the back of those juniors. Good enough for a top four or five club. But there's no way Harris was good enough to win a title. Loud, obnoxious, over emotional.

Once the foundation was in place, they switch to Lako. Nobody buys his nonsense about development, but he won the club its first championship since '97. No way Harris gets that done. Development played a role, then it was time to swing big.

Every club goes through cycles. Is it necessary to bash them? Sure, call Lako and Ettridge out on their BS but don't get out of hand!

Ettridge cops a bit of flack.
But I guess at least he gets his teams to the GF's.

I think apart from his arrogance and contradicting articles, the main backlash comes on GF night.

He has been favourite in each of those 3 games and lost.
If you swapped Parsons and Ettridge in 2016 & 2018 then Wolves win by double figures both games.

2017 not so much, but still the margin was insane.

Lacko and Ettridge are on $15000 easily. Parsons didn't get resigned at Cockburn because he wanted an increase in pay after winning a championship and Cockburn are supposedly poor. (If you listen to the board there) so I am sure Redbcaks and Wolves are paying their coaches around that maybe a tiny bit less.

Players get paid everywhere around the league and yes plebs are getting $50 for fuel to make them want to stay at the clubs they are at and to make them feel like they are any good. It's a ploy to keep juniors around the club.

Good unrestricted Australian - $400 to $800 per week

HAHA mate tell me one Aussie that would be getting $800 per week.

The Aussies in this league are very watered down.
Aside from say Gav Field who is it the best Aussie by a country mile.

Who else is worth over $400 a week?

If they are any good they are off playing elsewhere.

If Ettridge is on $15,000 then Parsons must be on $20,000+

He clearly has Ettridge covered in coaching ability.

Anytime a coach has less talent then the opposition coach and continually gets the better off him speaks volumes on ones ability to coach.

Just because someone is better it doesnt mean they get paid more. Perry Lakes has a smaller budget than Redbacks and Wolves, and now you could probably throw Flames into that mix.

Parsons would be on decent money for SBL coaches but not as much as the two previously mentioned.

Lets not forget probably the oldest trick in the book. put $150 through on the books and we will pay you the rest to coach a wabl team or do a camp or coach in an Academy. the books might say one thing, but the actual income in reality is often far higher.

"Parsons didn't get resigned at Cockburn because he wanted an increase in pay after winning a championship and Cockburn are supposedly poor."

well that's a bit skewed... he left Cockburn after two years of basically being team manager and sbl director as well. He wanted less club responsibility and more just team-based responsibility.

Is it reasonable to believe a couple of players in the league are making that? Perhaps. Assuming arguendo that you have any more credibility than anyone else.

But it gets thrown out as a standard mid-range starter figure. I've seen team lists with salaries on here where both imports are earning $1500 a game. It's laughable.

Then there's the question of how many games these guys played. If they only played 2/3rds of the season, $750/game becomes an entirely unremarkable figure.

There are many other Aussies in the league that provide a lot for a team not just scoring. If other Aussies took as many shots, they would be sure to put up similar numbers.
Look at guys in the past who were putting up good numbers and have tweaked their games to suit teams needs. Illiadis, Della, Jervis, Williamson, Thomas, Salinas, Hughes, Prince, Tovey, DJ, Ralph, Armour, Bruton, Tupea are all Aussies and still in the league and contribute to the teams success.

Recent ones Scott, Field, Cummings, Purser, Ellis, Godfrey, Vigor, Hussey, Michaels, and tonnes of other young Aussies doing their thing. There are plenty of good Australian talents, not just one.

Congratulations Wolfpack. A great wsbl offseason already.
CEO made it clear that if the club didn't have the talent from their massive junior competitions then they would poach the very best juniors from other clubs and pay for the very best players and coaches to win ... win ... win!!!
Wolves wsbl will run with a bigger spend than most men’s teams and it will be daylight to the second spend in wsbl.
Add steindl at 15-20k to that team and they are frightening in ability and budget!
And coach can now get paid outside cap as legit development staff so they can spend spend spend even more!!
Wolves deserve to win. They have earned it from their massive junior competitions and can now buy it!!
After all that is what wsbl is now about ... poach the very best juniors and players from other clubs ... abandon your juniors ... state it’s ok because they are 'good people’ ... spend spend spend and win!
Aaaahhhhhwwooooo ... wwwwiiiinnnnnn at all cost!! ... literally!

Salary cap 60k including coaches and all finals. If coach is paid 15 ... that is within the 60.
If 7 finals games 3+3+gf then need to allow for this if players paid per game.
If you have 2-4 players on game payments that can be $10k plus just for finals payments.
players can be on 800 pg if that's the way a club wants to build a team and it makes finals expensive and fitting in cap a challenge.

That’s why some teams have paids coming in half way thru season. They stack the back end of season.
Seems there are many different ways to play the sbl salary cap game.

40k - maybe a little to much I guess. old saying you" gotta spend money to make money" however and don't be surprised if some other coaches in the S.B.l are getting close to that number.

old saying " you get what you pay for "

old saying " gotta risk it to get the biscuit "

same result for the giants LAST-

the 4ok coach would have bought excellent players and imports and great coaching ability , thus sparked the town and basketball community once again. 8800-1000 people back therefore $$$$

however it will be same old , same old , time to take the blindfolds off and get out of your bubble and into the real world.

I think you might be right there about a former disgruntled someone.

Let's look at the logic of it all, if the Giants were flying and had the cattle already, a top line coach would be a priority. The fact they have to heavily recruit players means they currently can't spend that type of money on a top line coach.

If the reported 40k is true, half of that probably equates to a couple of top level Aussie recruits, which is probably the sizable chunk of their local playing budget. It's easier for metro teams to splash money at recruits as generally they don't have to relocate and accommodate them.

I'm sure no coach, no matter how good they are, would be able to win regularly with the cattle the Giants have right now.
Could they afford him as well as the alleged players he would bring? Highly unlikely.

While we are on the subject, let's rank the coaches. Interestingly there will only be one rookie coach in 2019 - Petrik - though his WSBL and WNBL experience almost counters the argument that he's a rookie.

Of the other 13 coaches, we will see 8 coaches staying put, and 5 coaches making comebacks in a head coaching capacity (Forde, Joseph, Creek. Utley. Triscari).

1. Parsons
Seems to win wherever he goes.

2. Ettridge
Despite what some may think of him, takes teams to grand finals.

3. Ellis
Underachieving

4. Black
Underachieving ver2

5. Lackovic
Underachieving ver3

6. Nener
Overachieving

7. Petrik
Has a championship-level team at his disposal so has everything to lose.

8. Utley
Veteran coach should shake things up at the Suns.

9. Creek
Has nothing to lose - the only way is up for the Giants.

10. Daniels
Will have a very young team in 2019 which will be challenging.

11. Forde
Needs Wildcats players if he wants to make playoffs. And will probably get them.

12. Trahair
Never really rated him as a coach.

13. Joseph
Been out a while and could be handed a rebuilding team.

14. Triscari
Looks like a desperation appointment.

signed Kyle Armour who is a veteran point guard
allegedly signed Mike Vigor who is a veteran big man
if they convince the ageless Jarrad prue to go again then thats another vet
add 2 quality imports which lakeside always seem to be able to get they arent looking so young

Creek is an experienced coach and is a good signing by the club. Bringing in rock n roll rubery from gero was an epic failure
they may as well go with someone local who can actually develop some local talent and stabilise the program

will be interesting to see if the rumors are true coming out of redbacks land that hussey looking elsewhere, obviously barrow signing at tigers and if vigor gone too what Lako will have to work with
