Go Southern

Southern have 6 new players who would all make the starting 5 at most clubs ;
Tracey Beatty (Braithwaite), Colleen Kaesler,
2 names ready to return to South but given the "testy times" there have decided to venture to Southern - Michelle Traener & Liv Warne.
Final clearances have not been given for the other 2 as yet but suffice to say they are friends with the above (NOT from South) and Southern will be looking for a top 4 finish this year.

South said there would not be any fallout from the coach change - they have effectively lost 4 excellent players - so far - rumour has it one more may be heading North.

It will be good to have another club in the finals mix but I hope Southern reward their loyal players and still give them some court time, not just replace them with the new names.

That's where you're wrong Mo'Bags. West are putting together an all 3 point shooting team, hence Krause was lured to the black and red. Phillips and Krause are going for an all time record for 3PA's next season.

Arnold, Thompson I believe to eagles. Hambour not going anywhere.

Think the eagles wanted Thompson to replace Farman, who has retired. And Arnold to add to their small, young guard rotation and play the 3 spot for them aswell.

Interesting to see if Thompson can have an injury free season. Bit of a risk by the eagles to take him...could end up being a waste of time and money, on the other hand... if he gets fit, could be more than a replacement than Farman...I think with the right people around him, Thomson could easily be a 20 and 10 player.

Good luck to them cause any team that can lift and make the womens comp more even has to be good for the sport. I'm not saying that they will make finals only time will tell but a better womens comp and a even mens comp has to be good for CABL supporters to come and watch both games.

That Norwood team was very ordinary. A Webber was the only shining light in it and norwood will not afford to loose him. Im just glad rupert has some youngsters coming in to replace the dead wood.

Reply #59930 | Report this post

Years ago

Yes Norwood could be better.

Notwithstanding the poor finish on the ladder individually I don't see any shining light. From the stats on this site:

No of players in Hoop SA rating top 20 - Nil

No of players in top 10 PPG - Nil

No of players in top 10 RPG - Nil

No of players in top 10 SPG - Nil

No of players in top 10 BPG - one (K Krause 9th)

No of players in top 10 APG - one (A Webber 10th)

No of players in top 10 TPG - one (A Webber 6th)

When looking at the list for stats per 48 minutes Norwood fair much better - they have 4 in the top 10 for turnovers!

In that list A Webber has 6.1 turnovers per 48 mins which is exactly the same as the number of assists per 48 minutes. Given that his ledger is square in this area how valuable is he to the defensive intensity of Norwood?

My advice - focus on playing the game and not chasing any $'s. Financial benefits will flow commensurate with your performance.

Reply #60016 | Report this post

Skyhook
Years ago

All of you idiots talking about money in the ABL league is worthless - the $ they get is peanuts anyway .

Everyone knows Norwood needs to improve, but trying to assign performance based on financial rewards is ridiculous, Webber is a first/second year player, he is not playing for the money.

The Norwood team will not be bottom this year as they have learned a lot from the quality teams they played last season.

My tip is Centrals or Tigers to be spooners this season.

Ps Have some balls and stop posting under anonymous all the time , so we can pick one anon from another .

Dont ya love these nwd predictions of grandure. I still remember their coach in 2001 quoting in a newspaper article that they were going to win the GF before the season even started. They were bottom that season as well! Maybe nwd pay their players peanuts but there are plenty of other clubs that would pay for webbers services, even if he was 7th or 8th man.

First of all - tool , it is grandeur. Besides, all i said was that Centrals and Southern will be below Norwood this year. Both those teams under-achieved for various reasons too.

Second of all, i was not saying dont pay the kid, i was saying that in a league like the ABL i DO NOT think that MONEY is the reason guys like Webber play the game. You CANNOT (in this state) live very well on $ earned playing basketball. So saying "pay him" to come off the bench at another club is totally off point.

Thirdly , S-a-l-a-r-y Cap (i said it slowly so you can understand it)
Do you know what that is ?

I'd like to know what ABL teams pay their "bench" .

What youngsters do the Flames have coming through and who are the dead wood that have been replaced????

There were no shining lights in the norwood season last year. If you think A webber had a good season last year you are kidding yourself. It is the PG job to run the team not try and do everything yourself. Webber needs to understand that to make his team better he needs to take that chip off his shoulder and do more of the team things. And dont say he averaged 6 assists a game Im talking about passing the ball around to keep the offence flowing instead of going outside the offence to create for yourself.

If the Flames had a decent PG last year they would have done alot better. There was no dead wood at Norwood we the oldest player being 27 I think. Once again the talent was there and the PG should have done better.

There are very few youngsters coming through at Norwood. Lean times ahead unless they recruit well.

I also heard that Jason williams may be returning to the central conference with the flames to fill the void at the PG position?

Excuses

Rob Eley, Christian Bell and Andrew Webber were not good enough to help the Flames "talent". When talent struggles for a number of years, when do you actually get evaluated for what you are doing on the court and not what you think you could do in your mind with a better player. Or keep hearing "we would be good if". It hard to run an offence when after the first quarter teams work out that you can stack the splitline and challenge them to shoot from outside. Think with the Flames you need to look at the quality of shots they miss compared to the opponent. 1 player shot 50% from three (not enough to make the top 10) and 3 above 40 from the field. 4 players above 60% from the line.
See below

http://www.hoops.com.au/sa/stats/team_display.cfm?id=3to make the top 10)

To say they would be better with a better player than Webber at the point guard is correct. They also would be beter with a better 2 man,3man 4 man, 5 man, bench & coach. That simple
Good players find a way to get it done, bad ones make excuses. Learn to shoot.

Tracey will have some great players to assist her and she is not only very pleased, she has been instrumental in persuading a few of them to join Southern.

Try....
Colleen Kaesler
Liv Warnes
Bec Redden
Terri Jo Draper (McNamara)
Fleur Holmes

Almost correct "Go Southern".

Try this:
01 - T Beatty (Braithwaite)
02 - C Kaesler (Byrt)
03 - TJ (Draper)
04 - Olivia Warnes
05 - Bec Redden
06 - Michelle (McCarthy)
07 - ?
08 - ?
09 - ?
10 - ?
11 - ?
12 - ?

Nerrida Cooper a possibility as she's been cut from West.

Hey - is it true Forestville have four "Restricted " WNBL players currently on their books?

Screen / Ranford / Smith,(Adel)
& Lindsay,(Canberra)

Skyhook I have also been told that J WIll is looking to come to Norwood.

Im not sure how confident I am in my source but it would be a good pick up for the flames.

Go you Southern Panthers ;-)
Do they want to relocate and use Marion stadium as their home court too? May as well. Will be an interesting showdown between Southern Panthers and South Adelaide Panthers come main season.

Mr Skyhook and Mr Lommax,

I now in NZ and realise Brakers not the team for me. I a liddle bit down to reed that you may look at J Will as yor messiah. Me thinks me have no future in basketball if you want him over me.

Schoolies week is over now Ivor - you should try applying for a position at the Caroma toilet factory. They are always looking for good people like you . You might run into Peter Okoye there , you remember him dont you ? My friend from Nigeria.

IF you look at the names at least half of them were actually Noarlunga Juniors at some point in time anyway.

mmm, yes - couple points to make since the last time i posted:

1 - Former Southern/NCT Juniors feature strongly in the line-up i announced,

2 - My bad on Lindsay - DOESNT MEAN SHE'S NOT COMING THOUGH!

3 - If it's good enough for South to steal Southern players, why can't we steal them right back? POSSESSION IS 9/10THS OF THE LAW! :)

4 - My bad on the ASIO/PEDDLE post before too - Peddle's playing for Connecticut, not Phoenix... oops.

To be honest its best for both clubs. The flake last year with South were not enough juniors and with Southern too young. South I'm sure will pick up players. Both teams should be in for a good year. And yes it should be a classic of games next year when South play Southern. Well worth the money to go and watch. For spectators to come and support their clubs.

Anon (#60773),

I believe money will not be an issue. The word going around the traps is that Mark Webber's Formula 1 team is looking at sponsoring a club as successful as they are and Norwood is high on their list. There definately seems to be a connection.

The word is that the Webber team does not have the talent of last year (but more heart). They will struggle ...... and only get three wins.

You can take this as gospel: Ivor Lotsakrappe, touted as the boom recruit WILL NOT be suiting up for the Flames. He has turned his back on basketball and has taken on a new challenge in European Handball. This is certainly a loss for the competition and Norwood in particular.

Apparently there was some internal dissent by some members questionning why you need to import 'Krappe when they already had that role covered.
