It's all well and good that the current people want to put a team in.
The problem with Uni teams is when the current enthusiastic people move on to the next stage of their lives, are there going to be another group of people coming through who want to take over the workload of admin etc. one of main reasons LtU and Monash folded in the past. Only sustainable for one 'generation’ of players.

Depends how it is run/ organised.

Melbourne Uni has had continued success as most of it's players aren't uni students.

Some are often ex students, but it's generally just a normal organisation being run out of that venue. In the case of Melb Uni the committee is stable (non/ ex students) and the playing group has been pretty stable (again made up of non students and a few ex students). I was told last year there were no actual current uni students playing, and they obviously had an older more experienced, and pretty solid squad (Norton, Masunda).

The University it self would pretty much be considered a sponsor which supports the club financially, as they do across a lot of elite sports (amateur footy, hockey, soccer, cricket etc)

At Melbourne Uni our aim is to promote students into our squads but it often depends a bit on the current enrolment as division 1 can be challenging for some of the younger players.

Historically we have always had a few students in our squad and it has in large part been made up of Melbourne Uni alumni (Liam and Nick being good examples).

University games is a good pipeline for us which I imagine will also be a recruiting tool for other universities.

We get a bit of support from the university but the program is mostly administered by club alumni on the committee and partially subsidised by our domestic program. We are probably the biggest adult domestic club in Australia with 14 Sunday night MSAC teams ranging from mens and womens A grade to E grade.

It would be great to see more university Big V clubs. As Billy mentioned, having stability on the committee is a pretty important first step but then being able to find the money is very tricky. Our Big V program annually costs ~$20-30k after league fees, payment of scorers, game night etc. and that is hard to fund without a junior program or having our own competition to pay for it. It can be challenging field a competitive team when other clubs can afford to pay for imports or waive fees for players etc.
