Could potentially be a coup of a signing, but he has to come in with a professional mindset and in relatively good shape. He's 31, and as we know, was playing starting level NBA basketball 5-ish years ago.

Maybe he's washed up, we've obviously had players with big pedigrees before that have come in and stunk, but there is a wealth of talent/upside here if he comes in with the right mindset.

If Ty can join the upper-echelon of import guards running around in the NBL this season, Brisbane are a real championship threat.

Looks like the script is playing out. Throw everything into getting Melbourne United a Championship, then focus on Brisbane. Hopefully they play Perth in the finals so Perth fans get the rough end of the stick from the dodgy refs this year.

So, has he been recruited as a starter or behind Cadee??

No joke, if Bullets land Ty Lawson and he's a shadow of the player he was at Denver, they become instant contenders. Would be a joke if Cadee started over him.

That being said, strange they would try to sign a player with documented attitude issues after what they did with Perrin Burford.

If this is at all true.

This is the kind of signing the Kings would have made a season ago. Hope it works out, but some pretty major red flags, ala Blake/Tyler.

Blake, Powell, Gee, Flynn, Harrington, Young etc, the ageing long-time NBA veteran hasn't worked out that well in making teams better as a general rule in recent years. Josh Childress was the obvious exception.

Second PG drafted by the T-Wolves (in that year they had a couple chances at Stephen Curry) to end up in the NBL. Ricky Rubio next?

Lamar Patterson looks like he'll be added to that list, he's already improved the Bullets.

Boone can be put on that list too. Harrington was just a stop gap for Childress being injured. The rest didn't pan out so well.

Thing is, Lawson is not a bad guy. He had some alcohol issues, whether he was an alcoholic or not I don't know but he definitely made some poor decisions by getting behind the wheel.

It seemed like a humbling experience, he seems committed to trying to give the NBA another crack, and by all accounts he was pretty good when he got picked up by Washington not long ago.

I have no idea if he's sober now, but I'd wager a lot of alcoholics probably aren't bad people... when sober. Again, hope it works out, and I hope if he has a wife/kids etc. they are out here with him as well. Risky move though with how well Brisbane are playing at the moment - but this should get bums in seats in Brisbane short-term, I'd say.

Are you suggesting that it is OK for the average Australian to be caught for DUI once every 2.5 years? Note, if they are caught that often they are doing it un-found even more often.

I think we have learnt that recruiting older ex-NBA players requires due diligence. The imports have been a real mixed bunch.

Returning Australians have done better: Bogut, Bairstow, Heal, Gaze, Bradtke, Anstey, Jawai (in Perth), Andersen, Schenscher.

Recruiting younger imports who had brief NBA careers has seen some great NBL players: Grace, Rose, Ware, Copeland, McClain, Owes.

Maybe the take home is that NBL franchises should go for 2 types of ex-NBA players: returning Aussies and imports still in their prime and hungry. The first is a natural, come home to finish your career thing. The younger imports would be harder to recruit: if you can't maintain an NBA roster spot, come down under where the lifestyle is great and there’s no language barriers if you only speak English.

The difference here is that a new import does not have to put a team on his back and turn them into contenders. He just has to hit the open shot, play some defence, and not expect to play 20+minutes.

"Lamar Patterson looks like he'll be added to that list."

Definitely not, didn't play much in the NBL and spend the previous season in Europe. Boone also had played around the world before coming here. That's probably why Childress is the exception of the long-time NBA vets, he had played Euroleague and learned what the international game is about.

Keeping Kendle is a smart move.
Brisbane are looking better each week and like Perth can still play 3rd import card anytime.

Can't see him starting, Gliddon is pretty ensconced in that SG spot and playing well, and if they're going to change starter at PG it would be Gibson moving into that spot given he's the one playing the back-up minutes there now.

AngusH,

Australia allows for dual citizenship (AUS/USA), so Kendle could well play as an Aussie in coming years should he meet requirements (eg Lisch)

What you are thinking of is the reverse. If an Aussie wants USA citizenship, they have to renounce their Aussie status and we American only.

Well...

Back in the 1950s they had a HUAAC to declare people as "Un-American". It led to blacklisting in Hollywood and elsewhere, and some good fictionalised accounts (On the Waterfront, the film version of The Scarlet Letter, The Great American Novel, Catch 22)

HUAAC= House UnAmerican Activities Committee.
