Backboard shattering

Just saw the A League broken soccer goal fiasco and I thought of 3 things.

1. Why wasn't a matching spare available?

2. Leigh Matthews really was a hard nut in every sense of the word.

3. How many times have backboards been shattered (or otherwise broken) in game time?

I saw a backboard shattered by Sydney in the early 80s at the Apollo. I’m sure it was Brad Dalton. The year that Mark Davis replaced Brian Decenzenzi (sp?) a few games in. Tech foul. Backboard replaced in about 10 minutes, the process looked very efficient and practiced to me, so they had to have had experience in changing the glass backboards.

I’ve also heard about the shatters that matters in dunk competitions, but I’ve never seen or heard of in-game shatterings (if that’s a word).

Has it happened in Australia, NBA, Euro etc in game time?

Saw Tiny Pinder smash one at Challenge Stadium (or Perth Superdrome as it was known back then). Not sure exactly when but I'm guessing 1987 or 1988.

Wasn't the gorilla’s shatter-fest in a dunk comp though?

I think it would be less common in game time.

Sorry. My original post referred to Dalton's shatter- that was in the warm-up. I think 1985.

Scott Ninnis broke one at the Apollo in the warm up and delayed the game by about 30 minutes

Following the 1992-93 season the NBA increased steel brace strength and increased stability of the backboard to prevent the hoop from falling down after Shaquille O'Neal broke two goal standards the previous season (although the glass remained intact, welds in the goal standard failed).

So technically no.

Tiny Pinder broke the backboard against Brisbane in 1988. I believe he also ripped one down in training the same year. Pretty amazing for a one handed dunk!

I always wonder if the NBL have spoken to Nate Jawai about this... For a bloke with his size and strength, he NEVER pulls down on the rim. I imagine he'd be capable to pulling the rim down.

Darryl Dawkins named his dunks with the one below being a good example after he covered Bill? Robinzine in glass in the 70s.

The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam-Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam.

Had about 6 others as well
