Premier League Round 6 Power Rankings and Preview

Power Rankings
1. Norwood Flames (6-0)
1a. Forestville Eagles (5-0)
Like we have at the bottom of the ladder, we have two clubs so far ahead of the rest that I can't seperate them. Forestville have had the easier schedule so far this year of the two clubs but have been impressive in dismantling each team while Norwood have had a mixed bag of opponents and taken all before them. Both teams have an elite top 6 players and fall off badly after that, but it's working so far.

3. North Adelaide (3-2)
Normality restored after a couple of surprise losses, taking care of the hapless Panthers. Starling returning to beast mode with a huge game on the weekend is an ominous sign for the league.

4. Central District Lions (3-2)
Huge weekend for the Lions taking care of business at home against West and Eastern. Imports looking to find their feet and getting solid contributions across the board.

5. Southern Tigers (2-2)
Could leap frog Centrals with a win this week. Handled business against Woodville and look to maybe getting some chemistry together.

6. Mount Gambier Pioneers (2-2)
Not docking them too hard for their late game collapse as Norwood are a very experienced team who just happened to get the better of them. Thankfully have another bye this week with South coming to town.

7. Eastern Mavs (2-3)
Took a loss in a game they'd have been hopeful to snatch on Sunday but still performing above expectation so far. Brandon Morris looks the real deal.

8. West Adelaide (3-2)
Possibly harsh to be put down this far but a two game skid in a close competition will do that. Would have been expecting to find a win last week against Centrals but appears they were never in it.

11. Woodville (1-4)
11a. Sturt Sabres (0-6)
11b. South Adelaide (0-4)
The less said about these teams the better with their only hopes this year looking like beating each other. In fairness Sturt kept the score closer with Forestville than the predictions indicated. Am noticing players disappearing from Souths box scores - have they already pulled the pin on a season going no where?

Round 6

North vs Eastern
A few weeks ago this would have been considered a walk over, but Mavs have shown some grit and fight recently Starling vs Morris alone is worth the price of admission but North should have too many complimentary pieces.

North by 13.

Mount Gambier vs South
Panthers seem no closer to their first win and Mount Gambier will be fired up after letting a winnable game slip away. South in desperate need of help for Allmon while the Pioneers have had someone different step up each game.

Pioneers by 24.

West vs Forestville
Two perennial contenders trending in different directions at the moment. West have struggled to put points on the board despite Kubanks return while Forestville have only been held under 100 once. I expect Forestville's starting 5 to be too strong here.

Eagles by 15.

Woodville vs Norwood
Can't see this being much of a contest. Saw Clippingers name not on the box score last week and wondered if perhaps he'd been given his marching orders but would be strange after 25 against South. Interesting to see if he suits up this week. It won't matter either way though.

Norwood by 19.

Centrals vs Southern
Played only a fortnight ago and Tigers took the W at home. Lions imports have had time to settle in some more since then and both had impressive outings on the weekend. Southern look to be settled again but will be well tested this weekend.

Southern by 4.

Forestville's depth does not fall off. I'd argue their 7-12 is the best in the league

Forestville have Rios and who on the bench?

I would judge that by their reserves record through the season.

Think your bench has to actually play more than garbage time minutes before you say their bench is deep.

Would put forestville above Norwood, played a lesser schedule but smashed opponents, especially north. Wins are wins but Norwood have sneaked past north and mt gambier. Proved against the pioneers they're always a shooters chance at winning any game. Ridiculous how Legan didn't get POTW, nearly single handed pulled the flames from losing position to take the win whilst the guy on the other side may have had more rebounds etc, wins it. Stevie Wonder must have watched that game and given the votes.
As for best bench, as said, apart from Rios they don't really have anyone. Akol Deng is terrible, can't think of any others. Would have to go to stats and add up bench points etc but no real standout. Maybe West with the experience, is Jordan West gone? Looks like Jimma Dau is coming off bench for Centrals with new import in. Very young group but Jackson Walsh had a big game last time against tigers and Atuer has had some good scoring games in limited minutes. Don't know what's going on with Clippinger at Woodville but if he's gone they sacked the wrong import. Can't understand why he gets limited minutes, has contributed well coming off bench.
North should begin to settle in, looks like they went back to correct game plan with Starling dominating. Would take a while to integrate McVeigh in. Bj proving his doubters correct, wants to be the man instead of running team and getting ball to Starling and McVeigh. That being said he's an upgrade on Cj and hopefully starts to get it.
Mt Gambier have been solid but not dominating as many thought. Being up in the air with waiting to find where they would play hurt them with depth losing some players. But probably have the most daunting home court advantage and experience of playing on the road. Maybe they've underestimated the Adelaide teams, but more likely the top teams have gotten stronger.
Can see Southern missing the playoffs, suddenly not the most talented team out there and coaching wise Deano can't just sit there. Depth isn't there, relying on Dodman as your first big off the bench isn't scaring anyone, his matchup against Truslove was like watching two old elephants banging bodies. Drmic is a great player but losing Mays who helped cleanup inside is a massive loss, even with his off court baggage. If Drmic or Turnage have an off night they're in trouble, Johns scoring is way down.
Sturt really miss veterans and South completely incompetent. Eastern only have Morris, whoever said they have top 2 imports in league havnt really watched Cherry. He's ok, but hardly a star, just bullied some young kids in his good games, no outside game.

Some decent assessments there of where teams are at.

North will hand Eastern two losses in a row.
South will remain winless in the Mount but might have a good night out.
West to lose covincingly for the third game in a row against the Eagles.
Norwood will be too good against the Warriors.
Centrals vs Southern harder to pick but the tigers should prevail.

North to beat Eastern by 18

Mount Gambier to beat South by 26

Forestville to beat West by 32

Norwood to beat Woodville by 11

Southern to beat Centrals by 19

North should account for Eastern fairly easily with Starling being able to negate Morris with Dowdell sliding over to help. Predict Eastern to struggle to score 50.
Mt Gambier will obliterate South by 40+, don't know what's going on at West but their matchups aren't too bad if they play together. Wouldn't mind putting some money on that as major upset. Kubank on Teys, Thomas on Harris and imports on Mays and Deng. Forestville should still win but would like to see odds. Or unless the alleged strongest bench in the league blow it out.
Norwood will kill Woodville and can see Southern having too much experience for young Lions.

Brine was huge for Norwood, but their overall lack of size allowed the 3 woodville bigs to feast on them as the game progressed. Really liked the composure of the young fella Meldrum. Was able to penetrate and score or assist his teammates well tonight. Was it helped by having a midget guard him most of the game ?

Looks like the Webber boys don't show up when they're playing infront of a small and quiet crowd and like the rowdy atmosphere

Hmmm, didn't think north would play like horseshit and let it go to overtime. And let the infamous Seb Vozzo score so much.
How can the preseason favourites in North be so bad, is it simply chemistry, is their backcourt so defensively terrible. Way they are going they may miss playoffs, maybe Hawkes should have stepped away, must be frustrating as hell.
And Warhurst haters going a bit quiet.

Good game at Port Adelaide. Haven't been in a while, but the stadium has a different feel to it. Not sure what else they did other than the floor, but it worked.

Patty Thomas also showed some great class telling a few young fans to cut out the "overrated" chant they started at Majok at the line. Nice to see.

#598. Lets write off North now! North needs to get back to their higher standards of defence. Seems this group believe they can outscore anyone. When the chemistry improves and some of them understand defence is important they may sneak into the finals

Norths defence in the last few years has been their trademark. This team seems to think it isn't important. The "guns" need to come together and sort this so they return to the Defensive unit they were last year and should be. Until then and when they get better chemistry they really are unpredictable. Holding Gambier to 65 then giving Eastern 102. With the athletes they have they should be scary in defence but a lack of effort and communication in this area is clear for most to see.
They are still 4-2, pretty sure they will be sorted and playing playoffs for those trying to write them off.

Had a look at the weekends games. Probably Brine for me.

Brine 36/17r/4 blocks
Dowdell 29/17r
McVeigh 32/9r
Morris 32/9r
Turnage 29/18r
Majok 26/13r
T Daly 27/8 5 steals

For me the loss to a bottom 3 side would rule Brine out. But we know that isn't a factor for the POTR selector(s)

It seems pretty straight forward that Brine should be POTR. His team lost but this is an individual award. Winning or losing hasn't effected any other weeks. Although Legan got shafted last week so who knows..

Was going to mention that, but personally don't think it matters as much as people believe. He obviously still played well. Selectors will probably make it a fans vote again and chuck a few spud calls in the mix.

Easily Vozzo for POTR and Warhurst coach of the round. In fact if Mavs win a couple more games Warhurst will crack 10 career wins in four seasons.

Thought some of the young woodville guards did a great job of forcing hard catches for Legan and not allowing him to get some freebie points at the foul line by Bryce Cottoning' him.

Anon #698 - How many wins do you have? LOL The effort Mavs did against North to go into OT was pretty impressive. Why don't you give credit where it's due or is your club that's on the bottom 3 of the ladder not giving you what you "want". Maybe some jealousy cause you left and they're doing better. Maybe the link to Mavs negativity was you, the link, and now you're gone they are doing better. The imports are pretty impressive compared to other seasons which is a good. Morris, Cherry, McGee & Vozzo all played well. Stop your rant and move on.

Gotta say Woodville was impressive as well Saturday night.

Mavs did play really well. Twice North looked like they had broken away and twice Eastern showed resilience and determination.
Eastern threw everything at North, who werent as bad as others are claiming on this thread, North got the win still though.

For sure. Much deeper this year.
Warriors getting Norwood, Eastern pushing North and Centrals smacking West are great results for the bottom five teams.

POTR Thacker (Southern) 25 points/6 rebounds

Other considerations
Tyson-Thomas (Eastern) had 26 points/9 rebounds/75% FT%/3 assists/1 steal/
Spencer (West) 27 points/7 rebounds/2 assists/3 steals
Annetts (Norwood) 27 points/5 rebounds/3 steals/3 assists/80% 3P%
Boone (Centrals) 29 points/8 rebounds/4 steals

I'm only touching the surface on what's in ink. How does Thacker get POTR fouling out of the game which means giving up points to the opposition (potentially) - I'm lost for words! This should be about overall points/rebounds/and general all round great on court.

Who on earth is picking these players each week...You're fired LOL

I notice that you conveniently omitted FG% from your stats. Scoring 25 points off 12 shots off the bench is just as impressive as any of the other scorers. You also omitted that Jemma had 4 steals while listing other's.

There have been some very questionable selections so far, but I don't think this is one of them.

If you're shit-stirring or have an axe to grind: good job. If you're actually trying to make a point then you've done so poorly.
