The Tom Jervis/Nate Jawai conspiracy theory thread

okay conspiracy theorists, get your teeth into this:

1. Tom Jervis gets the flick from Perth and is on the point of retiring
2. meanwhile big nate wont immediately commit to a new contract and taipans haven't got state govt. funding to pay him what he wants anyway
3. taipans reach out to Jervis through Jamie Loughton's Perth connection and sign Jervis on a retainer on the understanding he's unlikely to ever play, and that he's only playing if nate doesn't return
4. nate's agent shops him far and wide but no takers. Perth don't want a bar of him because he's a lazy pain in the arse to deal with, nobody else is looking for an injury-prone 32 Yr old centre who averages 6 ppg in the French second tier
5. tailans find some indigenous funding from somewhere and go back to nate with an offer
6. nate realises he's got no other options and signs
7. Tom Jervis steps back gracefully
8. nate acts like he was always coming back
9. nate's agent puts down the deposit on his new summerhouse

frankly I'd rather have had Tom Jervis but there you go.

I have it on pretty good authority that's basically what happened.

it IS funny how nate's signing was announced a day after Jervis retirement.

I could see that being quite possible, the only real iffy part of it is the Tom Jervis on retainer thing but that could be true. It's not like his family situation changed between signing with Cairns and retiring he was always going to be commuting and did sign a 2 year deal so it was a bit odd that he then decided to retire.

call it a signing bonus or whatever but there has to be something in it for him.

If that's what happened and it’s a big IF, it’s a pretty good plan so I can’t see that happening in Cairns.

Nate's salary has been partly funded as part of some kind of community outreach fund since he came to Cairns. they couldn't afford him without it. it's common knowledge.

Yeah, I don't know how long they've been in Melbourne? Maybe they thought it was going to be temporary.
Maybe he was hopeful of a gig with SEM, and when that didn't happen he took what was on offer, but they then figured it wasn't worth the agro?
He seems pretty involved in his wife's business, so maybe that's really booming???

Regarding the timing, its no big deal. It's quite conceivable he told cairns a while back, but agreed to hold off on the announcement.

jawai lost 20 kgs in France. It was either his lack of eating French cuisine or his team had a great s&c crew

Alternatively: Taipans don't want to overpay Jawai and negotiations stall. They have Jervis at least. Later, Jervis wants out as the money:strain ratio just isn't there, he forewarns them and the announcement is made at whatever time suits Cairns. Meanwhile, that both frees up some money and puts them in more desperate need of any local centre, so they slightly increase their offer to Nate and he accepts. They time his signing announcement to come shortly after the Jervis news and soften the blow.
