Line for Boomers at +14.5.
Do we have anyone other than Mills and Goulding that can light it up.

As a young man growing up I dreamed of being able to watch a national game between Australia and America. Tonight my dream became a reality, luckily I guessed that the superstars wouldn't come out so I didn't go to the event live. But even watching it on tv, I didn't change the channel repeatedly to see what else was on and go on Facebook etc because the performance churned out tonight was unbelievable. Most of the above joy I totally agree with, a gem of a selected team with way more excitement as a div 3 under 14 game. I'm grateful I paid for the electricity to watch even a part of it let alone going to it live. Can even use the excuse of flooding youngsters to prepare for Olympics.

Before Rio Bogut's health was suspect. It was when he came into the team that the Boomers form really lifted. It looks like Bogut can be just as influential on this team. He might be 3 years older, but he looks just as fit and athletic as in Rio and high IQ doesn't disappear. He might even be more potent as a scorer.

It is only a win in a practice game, but the best part is that we looked much closer to our Rio form. The offense was running well and there were patches of some serious D. It is also important to get guys like Mills and Ingles into some form. Now we need Delly to step up. He was great in Rio.

Went to the game - wasn't on the floor so can’t speak to that or the extortionate concert prices.

In the stands at the back had no issue, loved the game and the setup. IMO people were over reacting last game and because of the result this time around that negative feeling shifted completely.

I’d have like to have seen some more crowd involvement such as you’d see in the NBL by the announcer, and intro music being like thunderstruck, tnt, joker and the thief etc

Questions following the series:

1. Does the game 2 win negate the negative press regarding seating when it comes to promotion of Australian basketball?
2. Is it more damaging to Bolden's brand to not play? I.e if he played in the win that would have been great exposure
3. Realistically what are the boomers chances in World Cup. The bookies do not rate them.

I still don't know about our chances of winning it all this year. I feel like Serbia is far stronger than this USA team tbh. 1. Does the game 2 win negate the negative press regarding seating when it comes to promotion of Australian basketball?
There's a Channel 7 news story being shared on Twitter, which can be summed up as "there was a thing on at Marvel Stadium today, we interviewed some people about how shit their seats were. Here are those interviews. BTW we beat the US. Here are some more interviews about the shitty seats." So no.

Haha I saw the 7 news story. Does 7 just hate basketball or something? It was literally a video that collected photos of people taking low angle pictures of the court, a rehash that ACCC is investigating, interviews with people they had collected that did not enjoy it and then a mention that AUS won.

Reply #758093 | Report this post

^ yes, channel 7 hates every sport that competes with AFL. All channels have their own agenda* for showing what they want and in what light, but 7 seem to be notoriously bad for highlighting the negatives in all sports, including basketball.

*their own agenda being if that channel covers that sport. As basketball is not on 7 and hasn't been for over 20 years, then it couldn't care less about the gane and will highlight any negatives over the positives, while protecting the AFL as much as possible (Marvel is owned by the AFL, but 7 won't mention that in the critisism)

The Guardian usually seems to have an issue with basketball also. There's zero coverage until something related to Cambage flares up, or until the Filipino brawl, or these seat complaints. They have however put up a story about the history-making win at least.

If you were at the game yesterday you know how much this mattered. It certainly mattered to everybody in the stands who spent the whole game standing on their feet screaming. Even if they had to watch it on the Jumbotron and paid too much money for not being able to see. It mattered to every newspaper in America who had it on their front page. and in Australia. It mattered to every team in the World Cup who now knows that the u.s. is not invincible. Basketball is a game of confidence. Now we've got some and they don't. So what you're saying is it mattered when they lost to Canada in the first game against the United States so much everybody wanted the coaches and the team fired. But now that they won, and beat the best team in the coming tournament. It doesn't matter.

The key was Ingles handling the ball more. When he runs point forward they get into their sets earlier and he is much more damaging than Delly on the pic and ball.

I like subbing Goulding in for Delly here too if shooting is required.

@ KET

Game is on SBSonDemand.

Agree with starting intro for the Boomers. Music for USA was fine, but terribly underwhelming for the Aussies when some solid pump up music would've got the crowd going. Came across poorly on the broadcast also.

As someone else has already mentioned, very little that can be done re announcers etc soliciting crowd involvement in-game. Just the way it is, especially with USAB pretty much being an event 'partner’.

Personally thought promoters were way off the mark with pre-game entertainment inside. No hype whatsoever. The gender neutral DJ was ridiculously out of place, if I wanted to listed to shitty loud mash-ups I’d turn on Hit Network radio on a Friday afternoon.

Floss Cam, ugh. Sweet Caroline singalong, double ugh. Amateur hour.

Some people's reactions to this win have been ridiculous and puzzling. Okay, this is not the dream team. Everyone agrees. But what they are is the gold medal favorites heading into the world cup, and the most talented team at the cup by a wide margin. So if you can't accept it as a true win against Team USA, accept it as a win against the gold medal favorites, which is an achievement no matter how you slice it, and bodes well for our world cup campaign. It is also the first time we've beaten Team USA, regardless of its line up, since the times when we were stocked with NBL guys and they were playing college kids. However you cut it, we created history and ended a 66 year streak. It also looks pretty good in front of a crowd of 55'000 who probably never anticipated that a win was actually possible. Maybe people should stop being a bunch of bitter and hateful cunts and see all the positives that come from this win.

Is it our biggest win ever? Well, has any other win had the kind of media significance this has? I'd argue it is our biggest win ever in terms of public interest and exposure. Let's face it, the Boomers don't have a great history of winning those big, important games. And if we had won a medal it would easily trump this game. But in lieu of anything more impressive or any bigger statement, this is probably our biggest win ever, yes.

"Calm down our VERY best fluked a win over their C graders."

Are you some kind of moron?

Ben Simmons? Dante Exum? Jonah Bolden? Thon Maker? Ryan Broekhoff? Any of these names ring a bell?

You could make an NBA starting 5 out of the Boomers we're missing.

Lemanis doesn't lack confidence either does he. I admit myself if that I was coaching I'd be too scared of the backlash of making moves like he did, but he stuck to his guns, and it paid off... Pulling off Landale/ Baynes down the stretch and then going ultra small for the last possession. Bold.

@ME

Bolden & Maker aren't in our best 10 guys once Exum/Simmons come back so the don't make the roster as it is currently constructed.

Bolden & Maker play a similar position and with Simmons in that pushes them further away from a roster spot as Landale has clearly proved he is a better player than both at the FIBA game as his skill set is perfect for FIBA baskertball.

Broekoff most likely makes it ahead of creek or Gliddon but Maker/Bolden don't make the ten make roster.

Good point. If that doesn't make them work harder to gain their spot (or regain their credibility, in the case of Bolden) ...

Wow, imagine our depth if we can afford to leave guys like Cooks, Bolden, T Maker, ... out

Okay. The point I am making is this team is not our "Very best" possible team. Ben Simmons alone could potentially make the team substantially more dangerous. I think it's unfair for people to say the US didn't have their best team yet to ignore who we are also missing.

Broekhoff will be straight into the team. I imagine Bolden and Maker are still in our best 12.

It's amazing we have that level of competition for the squad.

Simmons, Delly, Exum
Mills, Goulding
Ingles, Broekhoff
Baynes, Bolden
Landale, Bogut, Maker

A squad like that seems right for me if injury/ egos allow it.

As the above said, when you start leaving out some pretty high calibre players

@Greggo

Landale has been playing the 4 spot beside Bogut/Baynes at the 5.

Maker & Bolden are both 4's in FIBA basketball as neither can guard the 5 spot as they simply don't have the frames/size to do it.

Cooks/Adel might be the ones who push for the spot behind landale at the 4 spot but can;t see anyway to fit them all into the team as we'd have to many of the same guy/position

Swap Landale and Baynes in my chart if you wish.

Maker is definitely a 5 in FIBA.
