Ettridge became so creative in explaining away his grand final losses that in the end, he was just discovering more ways to lose. Classic case of paralysis by analysis.

Replacing him is the equivalent to the Heimlich manoeuvre- clear the obstruction in the airway so normal breathing can begin again. Amen

my information is that the goldfields giants players had no respect for wayne creeks coaching ABILITY .therefore this team was lucky to get were they did because of how smart there leadership group was . bowie, holloway, humphries etc.
the giants board have decided to stick with the coach and not listen to the players and are know going to loose quality players and people.
sometimes you need to listen to the players- look at the rockingham women.

Okay Moose, I'll bite.

I have avoided this forum in recent times as unfortunately it has become a cesspool of misinformation, ghost whispers, undeserved and misguided criticism, and sadly pure loathing and hate. But when my name is mentioned and linked with some of that misinformation and ghost whispers, then you have crossed the line.

Moose, you obviously know who I am (it's no secret to most people in SBL circles), and I have absolutely no problem with putting my name to my posts (unlike yourself). So please call me - I'm pretty sure you have my number - and I will debate with you the misinformation and untruths being thrown around here, and update you with what the ACTUAL situation is with our playing group and coaching staff. You will probably be very surprised as it will be completely different to what you think.

If you feel you want to continue debating this on this message thread, you will be wasting your time as I won't be responding.

Tribute to Benny Dover - Rating the Chokes

No.4 - 2017
If I can give Ettridge a tiny tiny break, is that this was more a 50/50 game I didn't think they were the strong favourites in this game.
Bet365 thought otherwise, and they weren’t just beat they were absolutely embarrassed in what was one of the biggest lopsided GF games in SBL history.
The game was effectively over by quarter time. Not even a sniff.
With Ben refusing to make any changes or adjustments he sat back and watching his team sink without a yelp. Pathetic.

No.3 - 2019
The running stoush with Buccs Skipper Moot, only adds to this story.
Ben attacked the Buccs organisation during a regular season game in 2018, only to poach the very same player he was condemning in the offseason.
#builtnotbrought was turned on its head as Benny did everything he could to buy his way out of a 4 peat.
To blatantly bag out a team, only then to do the exact same thing means Ben actually fielded 1 wolves player in his top 7 players.
So as Minor Premiers shaping up to a Bucc’s team on the road, recently sending home an import, and getting destroyed by one of the players he bagged (MVP – Hunt) and let down by the one he poached (Ross) was an all-time classic.

No.2 – 2016
Losing the final regular season game and conceding the minor premiership, Benny then felt compelled to tell anyone and everyone that would listen that "we will see what happens in the Grand Final".
When word broke that when Cougars lost captain and best player Gav Field, Benny boy’s talking and confidence grew louder and louder as he was eyeing back to back championship’s, the shirts and hats were ordered.
What transpired was anything but, again a contest over early with Benny refusing to shake hands and smash his white board in full view of the crowd.

No.1 – 2018
Hawks losing stud import Holmen in the Semi-finals, left the Hawkies right for the picking, Wolves starting as the unbackable favourites, the result seemed a foregone conclusion, all the Wolves had to do was turn up.
However after losing 2 in a row, external pressure was building on the Wolfpack, but no one had any idea the mental demons Ben was facing inside, his kool aid he was drinking was going sour.
With Ben clearly struggling they went on to lose the unloseable of games, and the greatest upset in SBL history was set.
Losing to a Domestic team of Perry Lakes juniors the unthinkable happened and handed Benny boy his 3 peat.
Wolves should have won this game by 20pts with one hand behind tied behind their backs.

I am a massive Wolves fan. My observation for the past 2 Grand Final games have been both the Hawks and the Buccs took their intensity up another notch. The Wolves just seemed to be in cruise mode and not play with the same sort of passion as the eventual victors.

Wow we're clutching at straws there a bit aren't we. Clearly some jaded willo person based on the remark. Let it go, they left its done, move on people far out. Previous post saying Thwaites appointed himself women's coach clearly doesn't look on their social media page much given they were only asking for further EOI for that position this morning. Perhaps if you're going to make up BS you should at least make it a bit harder to fact check.

The Thwaites thing may not be done yet and shouldn't of been written like that but I think it is fair enough to speculate on it.

They open the positions in August with him running the process for both men and women ending in Coops being appointed men's coach.

They now re-open the women with the expressions to go to the President. It definitely creates a process and pathway for him to apply for it.

Will be interesting to see where Nener ends up now that he is out at Cockburn. he did well with what he had to work with.
Coops will do well there and will be interesting to see if any rocko boys follow him there. Travers?

Rumours swirling that Ettridge could be linked with another SBL club for 2020 season

Will be interesting to see how Tigers go with their recruiting in the offseason. Barrow didnt exactly set the world on fire for them and their second import situation didnt work out for them. Will they go with the model of trying to attract imports from other clubs or try to recruit out of the US?

CJ Jackson in at the Redbacks will be interesting. You can imagine he will be able to recruit a few guys there. Does he look at Redhage and Roberts returning?

Who do lakeside get to replace Kyle?
Do they back isenbarger in for another season and retain Wall?

Wolves. do salinas and illiadis go around again? Does Ross return? Davis?

Look at the League expanding to 16 teams in either 2020 or 2021 with both the Wildcats and Albany lodging formal applications to the League for SBL Licenses within the past two months.
The Wildcats have been steadily working behind the scenes to have their own development team in the League within the next two years (Similar to what West Coast has done in the WAFL). How will clubs feel with the likes of Lo Buluk, Travers etc suiting up for the Cats each week rather than the clubs who have spent years investing in their development?!
Albany have been attempting to get the Raiders back afloat for many a year but now with some huge sponsorship behind them and a new state of the art facility at their disposal (A far cry from the cracked backboard and garbage bag lined nets for change-rooms they use to dish up at the old Sports Centre just up the road), it seems that a new road-trip will be back in the League very soon.
It will be very interesting to see if the League gets longer in terms of season length or if they just add a couple more double headers of the current time format. Could also be a great opportunity to look at two conferences of nine teams in each and have less games but more emphasis on quality of product also. Only time will tell I guess

Albany makes sense - and it would be great to see the Raiders back in the League if they have the budget to be sustainable for many years to come. You could imagine the Buccs or Giants playing in Albany on a Saturday night, before playing South West on a Sunday arvo - What a road trip that would be!!

There are some many questions in relation to the Wildcats proposal: Where would they play out of? What sort of crowd would they generate? Why would clubs agree to develop kids through wabl only to lose them at SBL level for the cats to poach on false promises of an NBL contract; If the Cats was a genuine option, then there would need to be a serious talk about monetary compensation toward any club who's kids play for them, otherwise it really is not worth it whatsoever from a current club perspective.

Wildcats proposal was overwhelmingly knocked back by the clubs when put to them by BWA, for many of the reasons outlined above. I have it on good authority that their backup plan was to make East Perth basically Wildcats 2.0. Brennan and Chance have already been linked to them coaching wise, and you will find with the proposal not being approved, they will now link in closely with the Eagles and expect alot of their development players and even some of their vets to lineup for the Eagles over the next few years with the heavy NBL influence.

all good Cockburn wanted Tyrone to coach, odd that they go from a players girlfriend to the GM of the club, very incestuous but its the clubs choice IMO What is puzzling is that they got Tyrone to run the interviews, why a club allows someone who wants the job to run interviews is mind boggling and disrespectful to the applicants

New finals procedure to make it seem like we are following suit is crap. It basically means shock losses do not count for anything anymore, because that team will still get a second chance. It was the whole win or go home that was exciting about the SBL finals.

Then, to top it off they still have a one game grand final, like a bunch of morons. They make it out like teams aren't competing throughout the year, so it makes the regular season that more competitive. NO!!! teams always compete to get 1st seed for home court advantage.

how do you get a second chance in the old format? it was a best of three series, whoever won the series you went through. No Second chances, you had to prove you were the better team than the one you were competing against. Not lose and then end up playing another team from the other side.

Exactly if you lose one game of a best of three, you arent out but punished, then it means that team then has two win one more to prove they are the better team. In this new format a team can get lucky once against a team who may just have their number when it comes to match ups but then loses the next game to a team that has their number.

They might never play each other again.

So lets say for all questionable purposes:
Wolves match up really well against Hawks but poorly against Buccs.
Buccs don't match up well against Flames.
Buccs play Wolves first round and beat them.
Gero gets a break.
The next round they face Rockingham and lose one game and are out of the playoffs.
Joondalup lose first round, get a second chance against Perry lakes and they beat perry lakes. They then don't face that same team they lost to in the first round, they play a different team and make the finals. why should Joondalup make the finals if they were not suited to beat Geraldton in a best of three, or have the ability to make changes.

It gives no teams a chance to strategise and make changes within in a series. That is the part that shows good teams and good coaches. Not going on a great run against teams u may match up well against on one day. You had to prove over the course of three games, you were the better side and earn that next round to the max.

Go to club with the lowest expectations.
Take the pressure of himself, no doubt he would be feeling the heat after 4 fails in a row.

Daniel Johnson to play for willetton again at some point over the next few years

"As for his future, Johnson sees no possibility in him playing for any other NBL club than the 36ers the rest of his career and while Adelaide is always likely going to be home for him, a stint back at his original club Willetton is a possibility.

The lure of playing in the brand new Willetton Basketball Stadium is something that is something that he wants to experience at some point, he's just not sure when."

Just goes to show how uneducated you tools are
IF you have a look at imports around the league not often you get guys coming back year after year. You do get the odd exception but not often. So to say Bourke and Bowie are leaving because they don't like it here is a flat out lie. Anyone who knows even the smallest part of the way it runs the imports are generally last signed due to what aussie contingent there is. BH has an amazing opportunity in SA within basketball, something he couldn't get here so he has moved. Humphries was never a long term, infact he came last year to honor a contract he signed the year before due to injury.
As for the Creek Factor, you have an opinion, clearly your a hater, I know Wayne ok and I do not have an issue with him at all or the way he coaches.
There are some quality signings coming up from what I hear, so stay tuned. Unless you just like hating cause you have a pathetic insignificant life.

Be Safe All.

It seems that each week the haters change their focus to a different individual or team. Last week it was Etto, previous to that it was Ty and the Cougars, before that it was Lako. Now it's the Giants.

Interested to know who is next on the firing line. Buccs maybe?
Defending champs possibly losing 4 or 5 of their best players?

**BREAKING NEWS**

Big news out of Kalgoorlie-Boulder this evening, Goldfields Giants captain and backup point guard Daniel Forlano has announced he will be leaving the club in pursuit of a professional Australian rules football career.

Considered a local legend, Daniel has been a mainstay of the Giants roster.

"It was a tough decision in all honesty. But at the end of the day, two fiddy is two fiddy, and to get that every week to kick a ball around isn't bloody bad" Forlano said.

Although he is content with his decision, Forlano hasn’t ruled out a return to the Goldfields.

“The goldfields is a wonderful place to live. It has it all, subway, nandos, and the world famous Goldbar. What more could you ask for?”

Couldn’t have said it better myself Daniel, good luck champ.

From what I see Rockingham did very well to pick up Travis Durnin. Travis also did well choosing that program as opposed to Magic and spending another season sitting in the corner or at the wing and watching imports take most of the shots. If he hopes to get to the wildcats in the future, he definitely has a much better chance with the Flames.

Stop being so damn precious "Oooh this is a men's thread only"
No its not, it says WA SBL - thats it. If you cant handle the fact that we discuss both leagues on this thread then i suggest growing up, learn about a little thing called equality and dealing with your own personal shortcomings rather than hoping everyone else can make sure you feel comfortable just because you only want this to be about one gender. That's the problem with society today, too many numpties who get butt hurt at the slightest inconvenience to themselves without looking at the much broader picture. Hopefully your mum removes her breast from your mouth long enough for you to be able to actually grasp the concept that you dont always get what you want in life, and this is a public forum discussing our Leagues - Men AND Women.

The reason that this is connected is because the SBL community is very connected. Coaches and managers are/have been often part of both competitions, players have partners/friends/siblings in the league due to the club/community nature of the competitions. The referees generally have involvement with both leagues and as do administrations, sponsors and volunteers. It is a minor inconvenience for the people that are only interested in one of the leagues, there are however many more benefits than these slight inconveniences. The people groups mentioned above are a lot more important that the fan who is asking for a lot of the content to be removed, I hope that they can be humble and step back for a moment and understand this.

Just Wondering?
Years ago

Born in Zambales, Philippines, Washington played for the Eckerd College Tritons during his college career. In 2002, he had per-game averages of 20.5 pts (on 36% 3PT shooting) and 3.9 rebs in 32 games. He then raised his averages to 21.7 pts and 5.5 rebs in 32 games the next season. For his senior season, Washington was named to the Sunshine State Conference All Tournament Team. Washington also suited up for the Gwinnett Grizzlies at the 2004 LA Summer Pro League.

Washington was selected 1st overall draft pick in 2005 PBA draft by the FedEx Express and was traded to the Talk 'N Text Phone Pals during draft day. Despite putting good numbers, high expectations and the deep rotation of Talk 'N Text led him to being traded to the San Miguel Beermen in 2008 in exchange for the draft rights of 2008 3rd overall pick Jayson Castro. During the 2010 PBA Fiesta Conference, he was awarded the Best Player of the Conference. He is a three-time Mythical First Team Awardee in the PBA. He was then awarded another Best Player of the Conference Award during Game 4 of the 2010-11 PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
On June 11, 2013, Washington was sent to the GlobalPort Batang Pier after a trade that also sent Japeth Aguilar from GlobalPort to Barangay Ginebra.
On September 22, 2014, he was traded from GlobalPort to Talk 'N Text for Nonoy Baclao, rookie Harold Arboleda and the rights for Talk 'N Text's 2nd round pick in the 2018 draft. This trade is a part of a series of trades between Talk 'N Text, GlobalPort, and NLEX Road Warriors. He returned to Talk 'N Text after six years of playing with San Miguel/Petron and GlobalPort.
On October 13, 2016, Washington was traded to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters from GlobalPort Batang Pier in exchange for JR Quiñahan.

Wrong Jay Washington. That bloke you mentioned is a 38yo 6-8" Filipino/American who is well past it.

The 'Jay Washington' that the Slammers have signed is a 6-0" point guard who recently played in the QBL, and the year before that in Queensland second division league (SBL).

You could almost say he is a modern day Michael Lay.

He didnt play them at Wolves, he played half of Stirling before his own juniors, heck he even went and got some Ross which was against "everything" he believed in.

Outside of Hire, Durnin and two imports (Heard they are getting Ritchart back so will just be a replacement for the other guy they had last year) you would expect them to keep much of the same lineup down there. Godfrey, Beards x 3, Griffin, Roberts plus Waters returns after being at CoE for two years. Heard they are a smokey of getting Wagstaff also

2019 >> 2020

Ritchart >> Ritchart
White >> Import
Hire >> Hire
Travers >> Durnin
Godfrey >> Godfrey
J.Beard >> J.Beard
Pal >> ????

Same same.
In fact the loss of Pal may be countered by more games from Hire, but in the end they won't improve unless the second import is a gun. Still a top-4 team but not a championship team.

SBL to become NBL1 West as of 2020. Great for smaller clubs with the extra exposure but a raw deal for the clubs who have out in the time and effort in establishing a brand in the local community, this does absolutely nothing for them. Who do we want to see commentating the games each week when they are streamed on the soon to be launched NBL1 West YouTube Channel?

Reply #780004 | Report this post

If true, huge news for the league. Will it mean some financial injection from the nbl to get the product up to similar of what was offered in NBL1 this year in VIC?
Commentators wise who is there that's really out there? T Cowper and friends who ruined the grand finals this year by seeing who could yell the most or have the most adjectives in one sentence. No thanks. Be interesting to see if B Cecins or at T Young could do some games, even if it's only Perth and Rockingham respectively. At least their knowledge of the game and their ability to communicate that effectively to the viewer is known to be approved by most from their work on the radio show as well as on grand finals. Maybe get opposition coaches to do color commentary on games and allow them to scout somewhat as well.

Giants to be a good rebounding team that's for sure. Malek was a top 5 rebounder this year, and they add Garrang who was one of the best per-minute revounder in the comp. And now Hammell who looks like he might bring Volkel type rebounding numbers.

But who is scoring the points?

I would assume they will have a shooter lined up as their other import. With Hemmell, Tipene, the two Sudanese guys and another import, they will get their points. They've also got Ballantyne, Reid and Klasztorny and I've heard a rumour of another Mandurah player heading up there for work.

Don't know about the Giants' second import - looks average. Only 14ppg in NCAA D2

http://www.goldfieldsgiants.com/2019/12/24/jonessigning/

Reply #782411 | Report this post

Anon
Years ago

Doesn't mean anything. There have been plenty of D2 players come over here after averaging 10-15ppg in college, and been 20+ppg scorers in the SBL. The majority of college players who average above 15ppg in their senior year generally either played in bad teams or played in a lesser conference that didn't see much defence.

Jones actually looks pretty good and has high efficiency scoring when you look at his stats. Just reading the Giants media release and he was a high school All-American nominee and started his college career at the University of Richmond (NCAA D1), so to get a scholarship there to begin with is something. And the conference he played in is one of the tougher D2 conferences going around.

A pretty good pickup I would say.

Imports so far....

Buccs - Colter Lasher - 6-7" forward
Cougars - JT Harris - 6-6" forward
Flames - Josh Ritchart - 6-9" forward/centre
Giants - Corey Hammell - 6-6" forward
Giants - Joshua Jones - 6-4" guard/forward
Lightning - Jack Isenberger - 6-2" guard
Senators - Justin King - 6-3" guard
Slammers - Jay Washington - 6-0" guard
Tigers - Patrick Burke - 6-7" forward

Anyone want to start predicting some starting 5's

Might as well start at the top with the defending champs. Hunt and Alipate are gone, and that's two massive losses as quality 'Aussies' are difficult to replace for the regional teams. Inger returns and the rumour is that Wundenberg and Ralph are playing on. The big question for the Buccs is what to do with the second import spot (if Lasher is returning as rumoured). At the moment they are looking a shadow of the 2019 championship team...

Starters
C - ?????
F - Lasher (import)
F - Inger
G - ?????
G - Dinardo

Bench
C - Wundenberg
F - Ralph

Do they get an import centre or guard?
And then who fills the other spot?

Reply #783248 | Report this post

Anon
Years ago

Cougars:

F - JT Harris (import)
F - Field
F - Travers
G - Pesava
G - Chan

Bench
FC - Holmes
GF - Knight
GF - Bell
G - Van Lit
G - Vinci
G - Jake Harris

Only going with one import and don't have a true centre. Status of Pesava is unknown and Holmes, Bell or Knight with slip into that starting line-up if Pesava doesn't play.

Several clubs struggling to meet the criteria for NBL1 West next season. Signage requirements, streaming and commentators, 10k per team; are just some of the major issues that some of the clubs are very much struggling to come to terms with. What happens if they do not meet those requirements? Should the League just use the same commentators and roster them around to different games like they do with the refs and pay some kind of a stipend for travel / time etc

Reply #784010 | Report this post

Lukosius

As someone who has attended the meetings regarding the NBL1 proposal, I can state that the previous poster is incorrect. For starters the cost is nowhere near that, commentators will not be compulsory, and the clubs will have a transition period covering multiple years.

I won't elaborate any further as it's not my place to say at the moment as negotiations are still taking place. My club is fully in favour and we see this as a perfect opportunity for the SBL to go to the 'next level', and not be left behind or forgotten like we already are in some ways compared to the East.
