Schueller to Geelong

Justin Schueller announced as Supercats coach for next 3 years.

https://nbl1.com.au/news/article/supercats-announce-schueller-as-new-nbl1-mens-coach

I personally believe this is a great appointment and a perfect fit for Justin. It will be interesting to see what changes they make to the roster for next season.

Don't expect any local kids to get a go. Just expect all NBL fringe players to get signed.

Well, that is totally against what a merger of the Associations stands for! Why merge and create a huge Association if not to provide a pathway, which is what Schueller's first job should be to support the local talent and start sorting out his best local options?

Leon has been a great asset for Supercats and seems to have been treated poorly by Supercats Management with surprise tactics and bias against to bring in Schueller.

Clearly an uneducated move by Mark Neld, who in fairness has limited exposure and experience in the Australian Basketball landscape. Questions have to be asked; Was this a BV appointment???? or have United had a hand in Leon O'neil fate.

Replacing a coach with a rival who has a lesser record, had access to a way bigger player budget and still failed and has no ethical or passionate ties to Geelong is really poor......……….., I smell a rat!

All Schueller wants is a stop over for his next Job, Great work Kilsyth for recognising this and getting rid of Cash grabbing coaches who don't care about anything else but themselves. Leon O'neil is the opposite, loyal, genuine, good coach and great person!

Poor form Supercats!

Nicely said and could not be more spot on. Leon has been shafted, with the team he had this year to make finals was an incredible achievement. Hoping another association picks Leon up.

Loyalty is not around in any form of business any more. Sport probably the worst of the lot.

One coach with big budget who fails replaces coach with small budget that does better, you work it out.

Loyalty lol. Never saw him at anything other then a SEABL or Nbl1 game. Not at vjbl, not at clinics, never at domestic. Bring on Justin and let's hope his contract has precision to connect with the Juniors.

Cash grabbing coaches - being paid to do a job at the near professional level is not allowed now?

This is crazy, coaches need to be paid too! Time away from family, putting up with non-coaches on forum boards. I don't know all the background but money is money if Geelong see it fit to pay the man they will pay him. Results industry, its what are the results that the club wants.

Watkins would probably want to take over as he would think no one else would be good enough.
And it would be his way or the highway.

A great appointment for Geelong, Schueller has a proven track record of recruiting talent which is far supreme to O'Neill's. Leon has had 5 years at the helm of the Supercats and while he has made the playoffs every year he hasn't be able to produce a championship for the club. There comes a time when it's clear that a coach simply doesn't have that capability and it looks like Geelong have come to that conclusion with Leon.

He hasn't developed any local talent in his time at the helm of the SEABL program so they argument that he was truly invested in the Supercats isn't a fair statement, he was invested in the SEABL program, thats it. Leon didn't look engaged in games this season, disinterested and lazy on the sidelines.

He's relied on the talent of a handful of players during his time to get it done, not his great coaching. Life is easy when you have Nathan Herbert, Gatlin, Owusu etc to rely on to make plays.

A positive change for the club overall in a men's program which had become a little stale the last couple of years. They didn't get a win this season against anyone above them on the ladder, they won the games they were meant to win, that's it.

Will be interesting to see if David Herbert still wants NBL 1 gig,has resigned from role with Geelong United, which is a great shame as they won't replace him with either the quality of person or coach that he is,was able to attract high quality young future and current opals to program and if he is not around I’m not sure what type of side they will put on the floor, good luck to him in his new venture, good luck to Geelong United in trying to fill those shoes, because if rumours are true it will be funny watching on,looks like some messy selections amongst there VJBL sides, but that’s basketball.

Believe David Herbert was involved in appointing coaches.

Pathway development positions are a hard gig. Merging 2 clubs huge. They will not get everything right and keep everyone happy.

Lucky Bellarine close for the unhappy

I'm sure budget helped , but wouldn’t have a clue to what extent,Shelley could have stayed closer to home, she can’t receive payment, and Akuso improved every week, and re VJBL selections don’t put yourself in a position where nepotism is the the first skill to be selected,be a realist and go and coach where your child belongs, don’t have good long term committed kids in the twos, let’s just wait and see where this group ends up,and end of season results is all you can go on,

Like to see a couple of young locals developed. Don't mind a few MU bench players but now a monopoly of basketball in Geeling surely dictates develop some home grown players. Do not mean Varley etc who have had the chance for years now. New blood injection please.

Interesting comments here!

I think firstly it's important to say that Leon did a great job last year and the comments about him being lazy and not interested are not founded. Difference between what the Supercats have done the whole time with this group is have to balance life, work and basketball unlike a number of teams that have had a team that is available to them as professional athletes. The same goes to the coaching staff who from my knowledge, Leon does the same as these athletes as he works full time, has a young family and put everything he had into that team. To add to that he had one assistant who is in a similar situation studying, working and heavily involved with basketball in the region and state level.
We need to be honest and say that this year his team overachieved everyone’s expectations considering the turnover that he had to deal with. With that said, the decision to part ways from what I have heard could have been done better but this is the way the world works. We can sit and say all these things but give credit where credit is due.

Schueller is a great coach and I hope, looking from the outside in, that he succeeds and that the Geelong region benifets from having him there.

David Herbert has also done an amazing job with basketball in general in our region. Which is sad that if these rumours are true, he is avaliable to go somewhere else and coach.

They haven't kind of the point. Varley was on the bench off and on for years.

Yes that is the point, did he and others get much opportunity to actually develop? I know most of them spent 1 or 2 years max on the bench playing behind that group of guards that have just retired and then those who were recruited from elsewhere. Probably worth giving them a chance to actually play I'd think?

The last studs to come through
Geelong have left for bigger and better things which hurts too.
Johns, blagogevic and Landale (who did play for a bit) are examples of this. Tom pupuvac is another over playing college.
Cohen Blythe has potential to be a reasonable player at NbL1 level too.

Probably worth giving them a chance to prove themselves before we write people off.
Blythe and Varley both showed great things at times last year in limited opportunities.
