NBL Expansion Update

Any update on expansion teams for the NBL ? I understand the DEC needs to be essentially given to Larry for a Tassie team to happen. Is that likely to happen for NBL21 ?

I would say 21 season.

They would need to sell DEC and surrounding land for commercial use to LK for roughly auditor general value, then pump in funding for upgrade of DEC.

Not sure what the expectations are re putting in for a team itself.

I imagine it will be 2021, the general concept development of the area is a brilliant idea and draws in stakeholders which helps argue for it.

He needs to get $20mill from the Government for Dec "repairs". Then $1.5 per season for running the team. Oh he wants to buy the land too. Wilkinsons Point for (funnily enough) a rumoured $20mill.

And you'd think there would also need to be an upgrade on a Launceston venue. It could drag on for another year beyond 2021.

Is the Launceston Silverdome NBL ready?

They could get the DEC ready and play out there till any modernising of silverdome if required. The worst thing about the silverdome is it's location and lack of car parking. They don’t need 10000 seat stadiums in Tasmania, 4 to 6 thousand is fine.

They don't need a large stadium in Illawarra either.

I think Tas would be hoping for near-sellouts each game in a 5,500-6,000 seat stadium, particularly if they manage to make the general vicinity a great place for a night out.

latest on the dec upgrade. Id assume if the development was staggered over a decade like the article suggests then the stadium would be part of stage 1 if larry wants the Tassie team there asap?

Not only that.
The idea of student accommodation in the Northen suburbs is something the Uni has been pushing for a while now.
Part of the pay wall article.

"STUDENT accommodation is being considered as a late addition to a proposed worldclass lifestyle precinct in Glenorchy, council documents reveal.
The Glenorchy City Council planning authority will today consider a planning scheme amendment which would help pave the way for the development of Wilkinsons Point near the Derwent Entertainment Centre.
Last month, National Basketball League owner Larry Kestelman unveiled his masterplan for Wilkinsons Point, with up to $200 million to be invested in the area.
The plan for the waterside property includes an 11-storey hotel, restaurants, multipurpose indoor sports facilities, a high-performance centre and retail shops.
The project hinges on support from the State Government to refurbish the Derwent Entertainment Centre.....

I believe the re zoning decision might be made tonight?

Yeah the planets are aligning, however Larry has said he will pay market value for the land, that may be a kicker yet.
