NBL breaks attendance record for a round; crowds up 17%

Just read this press release. Great stuff:

The Hungry Jack's National Basketball League (NBL) has set a new record for the highest total attendance for a regular season round after 67,206 fans attended nine games across Round 13.

It smashes the previous record of 61,990 set across 10 games in Round 3 of the 1995 season. Attendance highlights from the round included:

· The top of the ladder blockbuster between Sydney Kings and Perth Wildcats at Qudos Bank Arena had the biggest attendance of the round of 11,569

· 27,354 fans attended the three games in Melbourne, a new record for the highest total attendance in a regular season round in Melbourne. The previous record was 24,768 in Round 16, 1994

· The Cairns Taipans sold out their New Year’s Eve game against South East Melbourne Phoenix at the Cairns Convention Centre, with 5135 attending

· The Illawarra Hawks recorded their highest home attendance since March 2012, when 5064 fans watched them upset Sydney on New Year’s Eve

A total of 576,739 fans have attended games so far this season, a 17 per cent increase on the same period for the 2018-19 season.

Finally. Since the move to summer public holidays have been barely utilised outside of Boxing Day. Such a wasted opportunity.

On crowd stats - obviously the league holds all historical figures - it would be nice if they were released to be viewed online.

It's absolutely smart to do so IMO. I actually think with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day on tues/wed they should have had a Thursday match as well. During the Christmas New Years period when everyone’s on holidays it’s a good time to have a game a day as best possible. Spreads it out during the week, perhaps even better for tv networks!

Great results especially for our little regional clubs.

So season to date (84 games), the league is averaging about 500 more people per game than full 2018-19 season. That sounds brilliant.

It's hard to know what they mean in the press release by "17 per cent increase on the same period for the 2018-19 season". 'The same period' might mean 84 games into the season or it might mean the period up to 1 January 2019, which only covered 66 games of last season.

Note that the 500 increase above converts to about 8% increase in the average crowd per game, which is quite different to the 17% increase for total attendance. So it's hard to project out where the total attendance will land for this season, compared to last, using these numbers. Safe to say it should be a lot bigger tghan 2018-19.

By way of comparison, last regular season had a total attendance figure of 714,346 over 112 games (6,378 per game). The 576,739 figure from the press release covers 84 games (6,866 per game). This regular season there'll ultimately be a total of 126 games played.

The round is on average less people per game

They have just added more games and counted more people and so they have a new round attendance record

What is it with all the idiots commenting on here lately?

Round 13 had the highest attendance for a round in NBL history 67,206 across the 9 games beating out the previous record of 61,990 set across 10 games in Round 3 of the 1995 season.

Zodiac, good work for pointing out idiots that can't read or just want to bag a very good product.

The LK reign keeps getting better.

You're a smart man Zodiac like myself.
6199 per game ( 10 games) in 1995
And 7467 per game (9 games) this current season.

Still a higher aggregate with only 9 games.

Man don't get too exicted. Have you ever seen how crowd stats are done?

Look at the official numbers from the host venue, add whatever to it and that becomes the officicial crowd. Therefore it's true because someone published it.

Some other idiot said "Great results especially for our little regional clubs"
Yes the underwhelming crowd at the Gong is such a good thing.

You are dumber than that other stupid Perth nick. Do you both have the same mother or father?
