Bullets v Cats Jan 5

I'ld like to think this game would be close, but the Jeckyl and Hyde nature of Brisbane means that they could win any game they want, and on the converse lose any game they should win.

Last time they played in Brisbane, Brisbane won by 9 points. In Perth, Perth won by 8. Which Brisbane team will roll up today? Perhaps the most interesting part of this game is seeing two coaches strut along the sidelines being more animate than a drama coach on crack. Who will be the most agitated and who will be the first one to get a tech?

You would think the Cats might just sneak a road win today....

It's crunch time for Perth.
They let top spot slip with a mediocre performance against Adelaide. If they want to cement top-2 and have another crack at first they have to start winning these "winnable" games.

It will be interesting to see the tactics, and whether Andre persists in starting Magnay and Hodgson together. And is so, ow he plans to go at Jook and Hunt. Getting those guys into foul trouble early is one of the keys to containing Perth. (Along with the obvious limiting Cotton and White.)

Another big game for Norton. He did well against Adelaide, so the battle against Sobey & Spudey will be telling. The starting PG role is his to lose.

A win here keeps Perth in striking distance of top spot with 5 of the past 7 games after this being home games.

Now would be a great time for Kay to return to form.

Any can win or lose to anyone on any night, and even in wins, more often than not they are far from convincing. What is worse, losing or Cairns and Brisbane after beating Perth in Perth, or losing to Adelaide and Brisbane after beating Sydney in Sydney?

Brisbane too big. We start majok and go down 10 real quick. Hunt is marginally better at least he has some explosiveness and looks to score. Why have an import big if you're not going to start him. Also norton is doing his best to mirror Martin, clanking wide open threes then goes camping inside the keyway because he doesn’t want to continue clanking.

Is it just me or is Norton hugely over rated? The commentators talk about him being aggressive but to me it looks like he just charges into the paint and throws up a prayer hoping for a foul. He also doesn't seem to be particularly creative at bringing others into the game. I’m hoping next year we go for an import starting PG assuming Martin either retires or comes off the bench. No use wasting an import spot on a big to sit on the bench.

Perth Wilburs

Terrico has low basketball IQ, he can't count the number of Brisbane players in front of him so carelessly dribbles the ball on the court resulting in a turnover. Terrico is too lazy on defence.

Norton is way overrated, but he is way better offensively than Martin. Norton should just dribble inside the arc and put up jump shots. Norton is mediocre on defence except last game for a bit. Norton has no confidence taking 3 pointers and can't finish at the rim.

Clint us ok. But like to see his best his man off the dribble more and go inside for more 2 point jumpers. Clint isn't a defensive player at all.

The Wildcats game plan isn't flexible enough to do adjustments when the opposition has done their adjustments.

Cotton should be more selfish when the game is being taking away from the Wildcats. Jordan demanded the ball when the Bulls were in trouble.

Hunt is serviceable but needs to fly for rebounds and finish. He grabs the ball yet can't jump back up for the finish.

Mmm, I hate it when he does that. needs to iron that out of his game.

It's actually hard to fault individual Cats players, some just a bit off their game. Overall defence was not where it needed to be, especially te failure to contain Patterson.
And the 3-oint shooting, God help us. Somehow the cats have morphed into the team that lives or dies at the 3-point arc. A risky strategy at best, and clearly failed miserably tonight.

I don't mind Norton, but the problem is we currently have no backup, so so we end up with Cotton and White running the point, which seems to limit them in other areas.
When Martin retires, Norton will either be starting PG, or playing elsewhere. No point bringing in a 30 minute gun PG, AND wasting money on Norton.

Besides, the biggest challenge remains doing something with our Starting Centre position.
We've currently got an import Centre who is undersize, has no range, can't start games because he gets into foul trouble, and can't finish games because he can't shoot f/t's. Definitely need to upgrade him for next season.

Cats have shown that on their day they can beat anyone. That makes for an interesting play-offs.
But they need to get rid of these inconsistencies. It's already cost them top spot, and MU & Cairns are nipping at their heals.

I personally like Nortons drive move, unfortunately it seems this season he hasnt been as confident with it. Lately he has stopped dribbling when inside and getting stuck, instead of dribbling back out of the key if the shot isnt there.

Terrico needs to start playing like a forward and do some driving, so lazy.

Sadly Hunt doesnt seem to be performing and might have to go, Majok Majok is playing great - im not sure why he doesnt get more minutes.

It's always interesting to hear Cats fans put shit on their own team's recruiting, the most team with around twice the amount of championships as the next best team in NBL history.

Cotton is on superstar money, White would be on close to that too very good money regardless and they had to pay overs for Nick Kay to get him to come over. After that there wouldn't be much left to throw around which is why their import big is usually a very limited player because they would be coming relatively cheap.

It's not like cheap import bigs like McKay, Cooke or Hunt has stopped the team from being successful right?

Dominant teams dont stay dominant if you get compliant on success, the talent in this league has moved on from what it was a few years ago.

Some facts:
* Their core which include guys like Knight, Hire etc.. are gone. I would argue in his prime Matt Knight had better rebounding, defence and scoring threat than Kay
* Martin looking his age and not really shutting poeple down like he used to
* League has moved away from low scoring games to higher scoring . You need to have teams who can light it up. Take Cairns as example where affordable roster built that way is lighting it up.
* Cooke Jrn was part of a failed campaign, if success if getting to finals and then exiting the first round then he was a good hire. If its a championship then it was a fail move
* Cats dont seem to be renewing their mid experience talent, we have bunch of old guys whos better days are past them and some total newbies who wont get enough court time or minutes to develope at Perth (e.g. Sunday Dech)
* Basketball internationally has moved away from the old centre like Hunt, cats should of looked for someone with either a decent mid range shot and preferrably a three.
* When your light on talent you dont hire an import than some games plays less than 10 minutes. It just shows the person was not a good fit for the team or league play style

When cats have lost this year in most cases it has been a slaughter, ive lost track how many games I turn off the tv when they play so poorly. They could easily lose most of their games from the finals. if their 3 dries up its over red rover.

The old cats rarely got routed , it was usually a close knit affair

Zodiac, its hard to comment specifically without knowing the full story. It's particularly hard with Perth because Trev will say he's targetting X, but then hire Y.
Maybe Hunt is a bargain who had to fit within the 5-man cap?? I don't know. It's not clear to me what guys like Martin, Norton, and Wagstaff are getting. If that's the case, then he's good value, but hopefully things change next season.
My personal view is that he is undersized, and that contributes to his foul trouble. Clearly he's a step backwards from Brandt, but maybe that was warranted and necessary.
He has been improving as the season progresses.

"You must be watching a different Hunt because his size has got nothing to do with his foul trouble"

His being "undersized" is my personal opinion, others may differ.

"Hunt got called out Heals show today, showed as being a lazy defender in a number of plays. "

He's a poor defender, and he commits sloppy fouls which mean he has to back off more.

In regards to his size and fouls, yeah, I guess I am talking wild hypotheticals, as in "if he were a bigger player, he would play differently"
Which I concede is not really much of a point at all.

Let me put it this way:
He's too small to defend the really big slow 5s,
and he's too slow and sloppy to defend the smaller quicker 4s.

"certainly not improving as the season goes on"
Part of it is that Trev is limiting his use, and getting better value out of what he can.

Perth has already hit 21 games, so barring an announcement in the next 24 hrs or so, Hunt is here for the season.
But I would not expect him to return.
