I'll stay if the club wants me: Joey

Joey hinted in his post match comments that the decision on his future is up to Sixers' management.

_____

"If the club doesn't want me then I can't stay here," said Wright, who will coach his 500th - and possibly last - NBL game next Saturday against Perth at RAC Arena.

"That's going to be up to them," he added.

"It's their decision but I haven't heard anything to the contrary other than finishing up my two years.

"There's a lot of speculation out there but I'm here until they say 'no'."

I doubt Boti announced it without there being something to it. Feels like management doesn't want him and Joey isn't interested in playing the game of "oh he left due to 'family commitments'. I think he wants the blame laid straight at management's feet.

Joey wants a good payout that's only reason saying happy to stay.
The club ,the supporters and he knows it is time to go.
I personally have no real desire to keep too many of this team. to be honest.
Need someone else quick to sort out who really wants to play for us .
No KB , No Smyth lets get Beveridge or someone climbing ranks or a import coach to go with 3 new imports.

I want the club to either fire him or back him 100%.

The worst case scenario is to have Wright stay and this thing hanging around.

Players will be unsure of their position and likely less motivated. Players may not want to be here if Wright leaves, let them go.

Import / recruit selection will be a mess because Wright and front office will clash heads.

Then another season gone.

Owner could have squashed it when asked by Casey last night, but he didn't.

Owner is the one who gave Joey a 5 year deal without pegging it to any KPI’s

The Creek situation has shown the owner is the best when it comes to understanding contracts

Lovemaker you are spot on... Nancy Clancy no comment crap after clearly leaking info. Back joey in and support with recruits or pay him out. Especially when owner signed off on 5 years.
Joey deserves better than this and so do Sixers.

Get him a decent assistant that is not a yes man and understands defence, Joey offensively has been excellent but his teams struggle defensively. No point backing him in for same results.

The Sixers front office doesn't have much a positive reputation so they could take one from the Matt Walsh playbook, make Joey redundant and appoint a Director of Basketball?

What I mean is if they reconcile, they back each other and work in unison.

We actually had enough money to buy a 4th place budget this season.

We squandered a season.

Don't believe that nonsense for a second. We spent less than Wollongong by all reports. DJ is our highest paid guy and he would be mid tier on most NBL teams

Hodgson, Sobey and Deng all left for significant salary increases.

The same person that Joey seems to have an issue with is running around telling people what he is paying players except he is over stating their payments by 200%

At the end of the day - it's not Joey that's putting the ball in the basket and the players need to be held responsible for the losing season this year. Joey is a good coach but needs to bust balls for non performers such as Froling that is horrendous - can't defend a 2 year old with a rubber ball, Griffin that has been great one game and horrible the next - and the list goes on.

The owner is nothing short of a tool - I firmly believe if you ditch Joey, then it's going to be at least another 2-3 season's before we get in the top 4 or close to that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the current owner signed off on a 5 year deal - pretty sure he didn't own the club when this deal was done.

Think you will find the current CEO of Titanium Arena inked that contract.

Incorrect, GK became majority shareholder in December 2016 and outright owner in March 2017.

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Adelaide_36ers

GK re-signed Joey to the 5 year deal at the end of March 2017.

One thing we can all agree on, a 5 year contract to a coach in any professional gig is extremely stupid. Add to that the lack of incentives and you got yourself a shit storm.

You wouldn't give a five year deal to :

NBA
- Nick Nurse
- Greg Popovich
- Eric Spoelstra
- Steve Kerr

NFL
- Bill Belichick

NBL
- Trevor Gleeson

Gleeson record in the nbl is as good as any, facts are facts.

Joey might have taken less money for a longer contract, at time owner probably thought it was a good investment, Joey happy due to a bit security.

LMAO @ Gleeson being in the same list as those other coaches

I know this would come if I included Gleeson, thats why I purposely separated them to their leagues so people wouldn't surmise that Gleeson is as good as Nick Nurse.

Gleeson is like it or not the closest in the league I would come to to offer 5 years.

He sits across your GM desk, he wants 5 years, in the last 5 seasons he has reached the playoffs 5 times, GF 3 times, won it all 3 times. Plus another 1 championship before that.

Do you tell him to get out or consider 5 years?

This was originally to address the assertion that you shouldn't offer ANYONE 5 years, not even Steve Kerr.

Lovebroker, perhaps those individual coaches sure. But you surely understand my point, in verbal sports terms, AFL etc it's very dumb thing to do. 3 years at a time, build culture and that carrot stays dangled to stay engaged.

Yes I understand.

I too thought that deal was risky for 5 years.

For Wright it was certainly a gamble but maybe the management saw potential there for a *gulp* dynasty.

Wright has turned bottom dwellers to grand finalists with this style of play plus Gary Ervin. He has developed talent like Creek and Sobey and they would likely stay. Under his coaching the team was on an upward trajectory.

It's hard to defend that decision knowing what we know today but there was some argument (found to be baseless now) at the time to make that decision. I say this though not knowing anything of money or KPIs etc.

Usual poor form by 36ers owner and upper echelon management (pre JVG) - sneaky, underhanded, decision making taken out of Joeys hands. IF the club does keep him on he needs to insist he does the recruiting - not the owner (who listens to any idiot that whispers in his ear) and the clueless CEO. Everything they have touched since Kelley took over has gone to c..p. Kelley should have been sanctioned by the NBL for initiating contact with Creek, who in their right mind would think for even a moment that Creek would want to be within spitting distance of Kelley. I will happily donate to the $500 fund lol

It is time for people to stop making excuses and look at the facts. Joey has underachieved. His game plan does not hold up and the team is not run properly. Teys should never be staring. Kyei should not be starting, although I do like him. Even when his team finished on top, his gameplan was so flawed and they were swept out of the playoffs. He has underachieved. Just look at what Gleeson has done in Perth with a similar budget to what Joey has in Adelaide. Playoffs and championships, while we sit here making excuse after excuse and go into full on denial mode about our team, our composition, and our spending. It's time to clear house.

I keep hearing about developing talent but if the player is there then surely it's just life? The player is there and they improve because they mature? I have never heard about JOey out on the court like Goorj used to do with his players. Creek (and others) was always going to get better and he did. Saying Joey achieved that is a bit far stretched for mine.

Every team has to pay up to 90% of the salary cap, I believe it's 1.5 million. Most team would be around that mark or slightly greater. It’s part the reason the comp is so close. Adelaide problem is the make up of the team, Perth get it right continuously. Even if team went 10% over the cap the difference is variable. Adelaide pay to much for some of there players that ain’t that good or Joey doesn’t develop them like most believe. Sean Bruce is a classic example just this season.

Teys is probably not the problem, he's cost effective, plays with true grit and is team first guy. Griffin. Moore and to a certain extent Randle have not performed. Throw in Froling going backwards, McVeigh not much good, Johnson and Drimic being hot and cold through out the season and any coach would be in trouble.

"Wright and the 36ers have been in discussions this week and have agreed to the terms of his exit ahead of an official announcement in days. He is still expected to attend their MVP night on Saturday for an official farewell."

so - 2 years contract payoutr - i'll say this for the owner, at least he's prepared to pay out a coaching contract, so wish matry had gotten paid out.

"Jerome Randle has also had a very quiet finish to the season and had just seven points last night. Unlike Griffin he does have a contract for next season."

So- openings for two more imports

"Anthony Drmic is out of contract and will have no shortage of suitors if he decides to explore his options at the end of the season, but is waiting on a call on Wright's future before making a decision on whether he stays or goes."

!!!??? highly in demand - a 3 point specialist who went 4 from 31 in the last 11 games of the season ?? -- stats may be quite wrong - correction invited
