Olgun Uluc released by Fox Sports

Is this a consequence of corona virus or were Fox already looking to cut their basketball coverage?

Whether you liked him or not, he helped keep basketball in the spotlight with his coverage.

The media landscape continues to transition to full time coverage of Mickey mouse AFL stories. Was watching 7 news the other night and their sports segment consisted of discussion about the best AFL players to wear #7 and a story about St Kilda assistant coach Aaron Hamill fixing swimming pools during his time off from the AFL pause. Basically an AFL magazine type tv show.

Fox released motorsport, AFL and rugby-covering employees as well. Doesn't seem to have been basketball-specific.

7 News has doubled up as an AFL magazine show for many years. The fact there are no games on right now has just emphasized the lack of stories so they have to come up with endless puff pieces and hypotheticals.

At least channel 10 Perth ran a decent segment about who were the top 5 Wildcats players of all time are.

Anyway, im sure Fox Sports will employ a new basketball reporter when the NBA and NBL resume. Would be good if they stood down a few AFL reporters too though...

And Channel 9 is showing similar desperation to keep up their quota of footy-related stories.

Olgun's job is to cover the NBA. His NBL stuff is a bonus. With no NBA there's no need for Olgun.

He'll be back in one way shape or form when basketball returns.

Launch a website Boti Nagy style?

I only caught part of this starting from when they finished showing some black and white footage (???) of Mike Ellis. From what year was that?

It was from 1983, and I have no idea why it was in black and white because I've seen that footage in colour on other history pieces.

He tried for sure, but Olgun was never any good and won't be missed.

Want some NBL content right now? Check out the NBL Pocket Podcast and Aussie Hoopla pods, both of those are releasing some ripper content right now and deserve attention.

I liked Olgun, he bought something different to other NBL journalists and was carving out his own lane.

Aussie Hoopla guys do some great work too. Both are very different in how they go about it. Good that we have choice.

No need to put one down over the other. No one is getting rich from this. Happy we have options.

"A few good aussie NBL pod's are out there really enjoy Aussie Hoopla & Beston Greenway for alot of my NBL Pod content."

Whilst I respect the efforts that many parties go to to provide content (probably at a net financial cost to themselves), the fact that Aussie Hoopla and Beston & Greenway are the best we have to offer right now kind of sums it up right now.

Beston and Greenway are far from the best

NBL Pocket Pod
Brad and Boti
Derek Rucker just started doing stuff

There's some decent content out there. Stay away from Beston and Greenway!

Once Olgun covered the Jonah Bolden boomers exit and just happened to "stumble" on a go fund fund me page that Jonah contributed to! A few days post negative media coverage of Jonah, and Olgun just randomly searching go fund mes and bang some positive press.

Easy to see for most who had him in their pocket.

Let me help you connect on of the most WELL KNOWN dots. His "sauces" was in fact one source, and it was Daniel Moldovan.

Now can you guess who Bolden's agent is?!?!?!

Haha - he will ask a 60 second long loaded as F question which he'll repeat but say differently at least twice. So bad. Listened for 15 minutes then shut it down.

Stay away from Beston & Greenway? FOH

I guess it really depends on what you value. The production values of Beston & Greenway are way higher than any other show. And really they are not so far from whoever you want to be the best...honestly who in mainstream media sport is head and shoulders above Karl Beston? Trig? Matty Johns? Some AFL bloke? Yeah, the guy loses his top and can go on but he has a lot of intelligent points and completely owns who he is. Guess a lot of people hate him for the same reason they hate Bogut.

Brad and Boti is corny AF, short and half WNBL. Cool if that's your thing. I much prefer Brad as a courtside reporter.

Rucker is a good personality but stopped for a long time. He always got the best out of his guests. Production values also average.

Pocket Pod has great guests and quality has improved but the host is pretty smug.

Aussie Hoopla are a treasure. The OGs. Their Leroy Loggins interview was brilliant.

Never heard of Karl Beston, who is he even.

Dan from Aussie Hoops is great IMO, quality has improved greatly from early days. Currently interviewing all the NBL coaches and those conversations have been interesting.

The dude from Pocket Pod is an acquired taste. Didn't like him at first but I'm fine with him now. Like his guests. Just dropped a pod with Sam Smith looking ahead to the Bulls doco, cool.

But yeah, certain people have certain tastes and not everyone will like one person. I just think it's good we're still getting quality NBL content at such a stale time.

This is one of the most bizarre and deteriorating posts ever. What the hell are people going on about and is it such big news a basketball journalist has been let go when there is no basketball on the planet. Then a plea to dad(Isaac) about a rude word.
Too many people working at home and self isolating only explanation for this. A lot of ramblings and bullshit, not even amusing because it makes no sense.

Don't mind the Boti Pod as well seems fun and enjoy Beston Greenway as a listen on the daily commute (when that was happening) and happy to mix and match a few of the pod's as all have different angles/conversations etc.

All of the pods with the exceptions of the betting company supported pods are put out at a financial cost to the presenters so good on them for having a crack.

The only one i'll probably avoid will be the convicted fraudster's pod thou!

Hilarious most of these comments on here are obviously from other NBL podcasts trying to pump their own tires up. Olgun wasn't perfect nobody is but he delivered the facts and was spot on with his rumors. Boti used to be the guy that would give you that, now he isn't posting as much content losing Olgun will be pretty big.

He was spot on with a very few situations. He had one close link to the Kings and a personal relationship with an agent. This is the same guy that bragged he had never spoken to anyone at the 36ers about a story for years. Quality.

Disregarding what you think about Olgun, are we really surprised Fox made his position redundant?

We shouldn't be. Never understood the value in having an Aussie regurgitate what's happening in the NBA, when there are a stack of credible US reporters/services who undertake a reliably better job.

As for NBL, the NBL provides decent enough coverage on its own site I feel. Sites like Pick N Roll and Aussie Hoopla pick up some scraps and supply secondary coverage. Aforementioned podcasts do a good job. Who actually relied on the Fox Sports site? Few people I'd say.

We'll be right.

Not going to argue with the NBA aspect, but I think there's value in having media covering a league rather than just relying on what the league itself puts out, or more casual blogs. Not sure I'd want to be paying their salary, but there's value regardless.

Wouldn't the NBA equivalent of the latter say that salaried sources like ESPN/Woj are unnecessary and we could rely on NBA.com and r/NBA?

Not critical to the NBL's success though and not a specific sign of the NBL being abandoned by Fox.

Lol at people having a go at Olgun for leaking stuff with an agenda. What do you think all journalists do?

70% of the journalists in this country colour their stories with whatever editorial line Murdoch wants them to take which is usually whatever is in his commercial or ideological interest.

In that light is he really that bad?
