NH: SANFL cost saving

Have read that the SANFL has announced that players, coaches, umpires, and officials will not be paid when the resume. Apparently they will be back training on May 18.

Great leadership by their CEO. It will ensure the league survives.

Will Basketball leagues look to do the same?

The only payments they will receive are from the Federal Government's $1500-a-fortnight JobKeeper package.
Sounds like they're being paid to me - what's the distinction? With JobKeeper, the payments are routed through the employer too (paid by employer and then a delayed reimbursement from the government).

Maybe there's some other benefit to being classified this way?

Hmmm, umpires volunteering to use own money to go to game to get abused and denigrated by both teams and if crowds are allowed. Definitely see umpires doing it for love of the game.
Wonder what the dropout rate will be for players. Money isn't really a deciding factor but a risk for them if virus returns and for no pay, in fact losing money. Can argue that most premier league players do the same thing so not pissing on sanfl bonfire, but if Forestville players were called in and said you're not getting paid I reckon a few dummies will fly.
And don't think you can call it leadership, just stating facts.

Isaac, not all players are eligible for Job Keeper, so many will be playing for nothing.

A few less amateur players doing nose beers on the weekend, not a bad thing for health and safety.

All community sport should be looking at players not getting paid this year. Save the money to ensure clubs stay around and invest in grassroots.
