Scott Machado to United.

Machado who had been in talks with Cairns and United has accepted a lucrative deal with United worth around $1 million over two years.

This makes me mad. LK strips other teams of good players by paying more than they can afford. Seriously hope this is a shit move for them just like Trimble was.

I imagine Mike Kelly will be infuriated.

He has to make a living. How about you take a job where in 10 years your out and have to find something new. That is basketball and sport in general. You have to prioritise the rest of your life and your financial well being.

What small teams like Cairns offer is the next top import to play for a bit less in the hope they can increase their worth on a big contract.

Can't blame Machado - he has to look after himself.
Can't blame United - have to do whatever they can to put themselves in the best position to win.

Still doesn't feel right - how can this be fixed?

There has been neither confirmation of a Cairns biggest ever value Contract signed, nor another United poach.

I use the poach term loosely as it's not really a poach.

Whilst I agree that its a bit stinky for MU to pull the same stunt two years running, why would Kelly be infuriated?
If anything he'd be thrilled!

This is almost exactly what he wants to happen. Without it Cairns' model doesn't work.

Cairns have the lowest budget in the NBl. They cannot afford to compete with the other teams. Their model is comprised of:
Playing "moneyball" with locals who can't or won't get a gig elsewhere;
Offering opportunities to young locals looking for a start; and
Scouting Imports who want to come to the NBL and showcase their talent for one season, in the hopes of getting a better deal elsewhere.
Guys like Trimble and Machado are their big selling point!

Last year they hit the jackpot with both their imports and young guys.

I don't know if the OP is official, or just a rumour, but the point stands.
Only way Cairns could retain Machado is with a big cash injection.

Hands off MU. Up until Trimble and Kelly, Taipans was a Bullets feeder-club.

McCarron was at Cairns as well, not much changes but that's business in sport and business in general.

I'm not sure about this it's been rumoured for a long time that Machado has re-signed with the Taipans for a new 2 year deal and it just hasn't been announced yet and I'm sure I heard something about Vickerman saying they intend to star McCarron at PG this season.

It would be terrible if it's true though Cairns losing another great player to United, LK's first born. Getting a bit sick of that culture-less team hoovering up all the talent from other teams.

Another reason that Melbourne is the new Sydney. Brian Goorjian when interviewed today made the point that of the Hawks roster, they have not taken players away from other Australian clubs. I now know what he was referring to.

It's not much of a point because that's also what Goorjian's teams in the past used to do it's just now at the Hawks with a smaller budget they can't afford to do it.

Correct they have not taken players from other clubs why would players want to go there.
Dech was in a way the exception to the rule in leaving Perth as a training player to get a contract and he has already bolted for Adelaide.

Deng Adel and Harvey look like good signings.
Deng Deng is probably grateful to be in the league.
Grida and Naar weren't getting much love elsewhere. White is a rookie , Froling wouldve been cheap though if he does well for next two years he will bolt for big money elsewhere.

Conflicted with this. Machado iis an ezcellent player abd woukd lift any team up however we already saw the Trimble/Mccarron/Goulding experiment and ir faiked miserably. Id rather get an import SF/PF for balance.

If true, Cairns will just go out, find another under the radar point guard and he'll continue the tradition, just shows how bad the Melbourne front office is if they have to continually pay big bucks to get players. Why can't they do the same and get under rated players themselves?

I for once think that the Hawks might actually have a bigger budget and one that may be closer to the other teams then we have ever been. Goorjian is on pretty big money himself.
