I still don't understand why he qualifies as a Next Star but John Mooney doesn't?

Mooney was already signed before they changed the rules to accommodate Jessup for Goorjian

Perth maybe thought enough of Mooney to sign him as a regular import.

Very good pick up - his outside shooting will spread the floor for the Hawks and should allow the bigs to get some good looks.

Liam Santamaria said Mooney was eligible but the Wildcats would need to nominate Mooney as an NS which goes into a pool and others may grab him.

Yeah you can't complain if your club wouldn’t take the risk of letting the player be a NS

Mooney is applicable to be a Next Star, Perth chose not to sign him as one.

Doesn't seem to make much sense not to sign him as a Next Star if you have the chance - the league pays his salary and you keep an import spot to use on another player.

Maybe Mooney demanded more money than the NS rules allowed so Cats had to sign him as a regular import? Not sure

It doesn't make sense to risk losing him to another club either!

"It doesn't make sense to risk losing him to another club either!"

On what basis would they lose him to another club? If the league is paying for his salary, then it's not like it would be a bidding war. Then it might come down to role and fit. The Cats are offering him a pretty prominent role, effectively filling the shoes of Nick Kay.

If a club wants to sign someone as a Next Star they have to register that player with the league. The league then notifies every club that that player is on the table as a Next Star and he is up for grabs.

"The league then notifies every club that that player is on the table as a Next Star and he is up for grabs."

Yeah, but what does "up for grabs" really mean? Who makes the final call? I understand the player has to agree to where he's going. So if money was taken care of regardless of where he was going, then it would come down to fit and role. To which Mooney seems to be a good fit and have a prominent role with Perth.

I think the only thing that makes sense is that the NBL's Next Star salary might be $100k, and Mooney is worth more so negotiated a better deal?

What's to stop Mooney registering as a NS, then Perth outbid everyone else for "overs" for his signature?

Wasn't that sorta done in Melo's case where the league paid his "wage" and the club offered more on top. He (the player) gets more and the club still have a roster spot avail. Or are they keeping a NS spot up their sleeve?

Oh Perth, you're a worry with all these schemes.

LK looking after his new franchise, it's that simple. You own the league you make your own rules, no different to any other business.

Perth opted to sign as an import because they didn't want to risk the player going to a different NBL club. That’s why they made that decision. What are you arguing against exactly? Perth made the decisions sign him as their import.

Just because you want a guy to be NS of your team doesn’t mean that’s how it would have worked out, hence the risk.

Perth will be hoping for...

Norton/White/Britt
Cotton/Steindl/Buluk
NS/Blanchfield/Travers
Mooney/Wagstaff
Plumlee/Majok/Ferguson

Perth will just be hoping for Plumlee.
Don't see them getting a next star especially a wing player.

Perth should try and get a point guard as a next star

How dies Jessup land at the Hawks though? If he is offered to every club, did the Hawks outbid others? Did the league decide the Hawks was the best fit for him, and on what basis? How did Sydney get a NS last season when a player like Didi would have been much more useful at other clubs?
