Would the NBA ditch the three-second rule?

Saw an interesting comment elsewhere on the rise of three-point shots, wondering if the NBA might consider removing the three-seconds-in-the-key rule to rebalance the game for traditional centres? The other advantage is that it might make the midrange shot viable again.

Figured it was at least an interesting hypothetical.

Midrange shot was always viable for the Spurs

Not certain about your last sentence, Isaac;
"The other advantage is that it might make the midrange shot viable again."
Isn't the 3-pointer more of a value-for-the-shot issue?

KET, the 3 was viable for the Spurs when it was the trend.

Midrange looks didnt work for them for long once the game shifted to 3's

This is interesting. Would like to see it trialled somehow.

I imagine you'd have to remove the three second defensive violation as well though yeah? Or not? I guess you could go either way.

Funny that the best two teams (Lakers/Nuggets) clearly had center who could dominate both inside & out

Perhaps the modern Center has actual skills and and drag slow defenders away from the rim and smaller defenders get killed down low opening up the floor for others.

The old days of massive unit centers with no skills are dead and buried for the better.

Davis was magnificent for LA, but always wanted to be the 4, when he went to the 5 he was at his most dangerous. Agile big men are not going to be replaced by giant lumbers soon.

Won't work, Boban becomes a max player because you stand him under the basket permanently, his offensive efficiency becomes too high as every catch would be a tackle to foul him or a dunk, that's not how a traditional centre plays.

They bought it in for that reason because Chamberlain was dominating

Agree the Defense 3 second rule helped back in the early 2000's when the game became super ugly and junkie type ball was being played but now it makes it to easy for Lebron and Co to just charge to the hoop without being challenged by big time shot blockers.

It might bring the bigs back into the Game if they can contend at the rim more.

By mid-range shot, are you referring to shots from within the key?

Which 3-second rule are you referring to?

TBH there have been some NBL games where I would have liked to see the defensive rule in place

WTF are you on about???

He didn't specify which 3-point rule, so I was trying to figure out how removing it made mid-range shots more viable?

That makes even less sense than you somehow thinking mid-range shots were taken from the key.
