Vic State Basketball Centre budget upgraded to $130m

"State Basketball Centre expansion receives budget upgrade" - Basketball Victoria website

$130M pumped into the facility to take it to 16 courts and additional administration areas.

"The additional $22 million, announced in the Victorian State Budget, is on top of the original funding announced in 2018, provided by the Victorian State Government ($83M) and Knox City Council ($25M). The expansion will increase capacity at the State Basketball Centre to 16 courts, encompassing 10 new indoor community courts and high-performance training facilities for athletes within Victorian and national teams as well as WNBL and NBL franchises."

I had thought a while ago, there was talk of expanding the show court area capacity, to make it more suitable for NBL regular season games? No mention of this in the release that I saw. Is this still on the cards?

Great news for local basketball nonetheless.

8000 is ideal for basketball, make tickets more valuable and the stadium full. In the local derby if it gets so popular move it to Rod Lavor arena for those games.

I'm from knox, the population of sem is too big for just 8000 sear. They pack the 3200 boomers quite easily.

Some stadiums can be great but there's nothing nearby to do such as bars restaurants. What's the go in that area?

8000 seats is perfect. SEM struggled to get 3000 to games, even Melbourne had lots of games not reaching 8000. I understand there is going to be growth because of the move to SEM but it will also mean they stop giving away tickets. No point having 12000 seats for SEM V Hawks when less than 4000 would be there.

The Derby can be moved to Hisense(Not sure what its called now) or Rod Laver if bigger is needed.

So there will be:
3000 at State
5000 at MCA
8000 at State MPS
10000 at Hisense
15000 at RLA
all possible stadiums for Basketball.

You get out what you put in. Greater financial support offered by state and local governments is one factor - among many factors - that drive Vic supremacy in Aust basketball.
There is no equivalent facility in Sydney. By design. Tony Abbot was very keen to build a new grandstand at Brookvale oval for NRL, which is played by few. Made a huge deal about it in the press, particularly the Murdoch press. All the while, the Norths Basketball Club was being thrown out of its crappy 4 court facility (that sits on top of a carpark) and faced extinction.
