United have no weak spots, could go undefeated: Landale

Star signing Jock Landale has high expectations for his Melbourne United team.

He's also mentioned to the media that there is only a "small" buy-out to exit (for the NBA) before 75% of the season is completed.

_____

"It's a monster of a line-up and I have monstrous expectations for this team," Landale said.

"Having seen how good we can be when we're on I think we have the potential to go undefeated.

"It will be so hard for teams to beat us ... there's really no weak spots."

"If an NBA team comes calling any time before 75 percent of the season is up, then I can go over there for a really small buy-out," Landale told AAP of his contract.

"The last I heard from my agent was when I locked in with Melbourne and I said to him, 'for my own mental health, can you now leave me out of this process and don't tell me anything unless there's something that's there to sign'.

"I was getting so wrapped up in it about who was interested and what could happen that I couldn't focus with a whole bunch of maybes thrown at me.

"I'm just trying to live in the moment and enjoying being back home with my family."

No weak spots? Did they sign a starting 4 man? They are definitely the most talented on paper, but that was true last year too.

Maybe that contributed him ending up in the NBL?

1986 Adelaide 36ers team, 24 - 2 in regular season and 3 - 1 in the Playoffs

Landale is confusing NBL with European leagues. We actually have parity.

Adelaide invincibles were a two loss regular season team.

New Zealand went 24-4 and 4-0 in the playoffs in 2013, the year they won their third title.

That 2006/7 Bullets team was strong albeit in a weaker league. From memory, they applied a full court press at times, which is rare at the professional level.

Only way MU goes undefeated is if the season is cancelled.

No Weak Spots?
1. They have no starting PG, and presumably are going to rely on McCarron.
2. Goulding was moved to the bench because he was too inconsistent, but will now have to hold down the starting SG spot.
3. Ok, so they managed to poach Hopson, that's a big plus.
4. They have no PF, apart from old-man Badlow, who passed his use-by a few years back, and as usual won't last the season.
5. Landale should be Good in the NBL, but already has one foot out the door.

The bench isn't that great.
Barlow might be the weak link but with Jack White will timeshare power forward.

Landale explains to the rest of us why he hasn't made it to the NBA. Not even Westbrook would make that type of claim.

Bit of a strange comment as I'm sure he doesn’t realistically think they’ll be undefeated. Nothing wrong with having confidence but these types of comments can come back to bite. Disagree that White and Acuil are weaknesses off the bench. White looks impressive as a role player at the 4 while Acuil would IMO be the best 5 off the bench across the league. Just needs more consistency and to hold his position in the block. Has got range as well. Barlow as the starter at the 4 presents some problems as he really should be off the bench these days. They have another import spot up their sleeve though.

Not interested in a ridiculous prediction like this from a guy who's never played a game in the NBL. Unfortunately it says a fair bit about him though. This United team isn't even the best team on paper.

All eyes will be on Landale .
Comes in rated our best non NBA player and allegedly highest paid local.
He needs to be an all nbl level player and MVP candidate to justify the hype.

The undefeated comment I wouldn't read much into that. Many have made those comments before and failed, nothing wrong with optimism though some see it as arrogance.

Loe > Acuil. No way Acuil is the best bench 5.

Bench centres don't look that impressive.

Pinder
Harrison
Jawai not the same as we was.
Ogilvy
Lual Acil
Loe
Jervis??
Pineau?
Kickert and Hunter.

Yes, fair point, Loe is a probably a better player right now but I think Acuil has a much higher ceiling with potential to be a genuine starter.

Hopson is a big plus offensively, but defensively ain't that good. Vickerman is probably smart enough to cover the weakness with who’s on the court with him, though as last year it could be United problem again, bad defence.

Thanks. Bit of overconfidence there

If he's under any illusions about how competitive the NBL is, they'll quickly be erased

Interesting context though is He's been playing in Lithuania where he team was 22-2 last season before it was ended due to covid, and in 18-19 32-4 and then 7-0 in playoffs, undefeated

He may not realise exactly how rare that type of dominance is in Australia

His Lithuanian side last year dominates every year. He never even started a lot games. Nbl lot closer than that.

I've been a fan of Ogilvy for his entire career but he is slowing down, as for who I'd go as best bench centre, I'll go Jawai as when he is fit and firing, he is more unstoppable than other bench 5s... it's keeping him injury free that is his biggest challenge.

As for United, I'm intrigued by their Japanese shooting guard, will he get a starting role over Goulding or will they finally play McCarron at the 2 (his best position) and start Ili?
