WNBA 2021 Season

Pretty big free agency period so far, with Candace Parker & Natasha Howard among the players changing teams.

Aussie-wise, the big news was Sami Whitcomb being sign-and-traded from Seattle to New York
:(
... in exchange for the rights to Steph Talbot, who today signed a training camp contract with Seattle.

So we'll potentially have:
Magbegor & Talbot in Seattle
Whitcomb & Allen in NY
Cambage in Las Vegas
Smith in Phoenix
Mitchell in Washington
Heal in... ???

(the draft should be around mid April)

Heal currently on mock to New York. She was #21, #18, #11 and now #6.
Mangakahia dropped way down, was #9 and now #27 to Atlanta. looks like it will be some time before she she gets her conditioning back. Won't make a roster this year, wnbl bound.

The fact that atlanta picked her up 3 years ago at #16 and the coach is still in regular communication with her plus they have kept her rights means they have a future for her. If Dietrick didn't have a great season last year, maybe she would have had more of a chance this season.

At the moment they have Carter as starting pg, dietrick as backup pg and Williams as a cg, Laney as sg/sf and no other guards. Surely they will go for a guard in the draft.

Mangakahia will have another year of eligibility as this season does not count. Syracuse will want to keep her it just depends if she wants to stay. But i think that would make her close to 26 years old playing against 18 and 19 year olds.

Tiana said herself she's only 80%, I personally think she should test herself in wnbl, not wnba calibre based off this season.

18/19 was a completely different player to this year.

I really hope for everyone's sake that Mangakahia can get back to her form of a few years ago. At that time she was talked about as a 1st round draft pick (in stronger drafts than today's one)
She has been through a LOT, so fingers crossed that she has some healthy years ahead of her and a shot at recapturing that old form.

ESPN down under have always been a bit hopeless in letting us know which games we'll be seeing.
Keep in mind that there are also selected games on Twitter & Facebook (and as of this season, some on Amazon Prime as well).

I have so many streaming services as it is at the moment and don't watch enough of any of it to really justify having the ones i have let alone adding more.

I agree the WNBA league pass is incredible value. I probably max out at having time to watch 2 games per week anyways (as I currently am at with NBA) so if ESPN were to show even one extra game a week it might be enough for me. I might wait and see.

Strong starts to the season for Liz, Ezi & Sami, and today Bec Allen was a big part of swinging the momentum back to NY as they beat Minnesota (with Ionescu becoming the youngest player to achieve a WNBA triple double in the process).

Smith put a couple of poor starts behind her and logged 20 minutes today.
The bench was important in helping to put Washington away.

Rough start to the season for Mitchell and her undermanned Washington team. 7 assists & 3 steals but 0-5 from outside as the whole team was ice cold.

Talbot getting decent bench minutes for Seattle, which should increase in the short term as Samuelson leaves to play 3x3 qualifiers.

All up a very nice start for the aussies. NY have transformed from complete trash to highly watchable over this offseason.

Mitchell is done, if sandy picks her, it'll be because of personal relationship and not who’s best for the team or who’s in form.

Don’t forget sandy chose Mitchell n Mansfield for the WC, both injured they moved ebzery n Madgen to the 1. We won a silver medal... After this sandy goes back to Mitchell again...
Every tournament from Asia qualifiers, Olympic qualifiers and Asia cup with Mitchell at the helm we have lost the tournament. Multiple losses to China, Japan and beaten by France. Scraped past Brazil. Could not keep up with wang, motohashi or epoupa. Teams we will face at olympics....

George’s lack of mobility at the 4 was also a problem and should be the backup c from now on.

They still have Cole if they don't make 3x3 ( which is highly likely they don’t)
Still got Shelley to come through, and watching Antoniadou run point in NBL1 you could add her along with Conti and Reid to that list all early 20s

Coles a sg.
AFLW starting earlier means you can't play both wnbl/afl
Shelley is overated, hence why she was moved on, fallon further down bench.
Both Mangakahia and Wallace need to get back into game shape.
Heal and Rocci both need exp, maybe Asia cup first.
Reid a step below these 2 atm, so too antoniadou. Both backups in wnbl, not starters like heal, Rocci

Obviously you haven't watched Antoniadou lately ,
Wallace has yet to prove she can stay the distance, she hasn’t played in almost 4 years
Amore is in a low div college , never played against older players ..... and yes too small for international play
Mitchell only made the international scene after Mark Wright picked her up fir ads denying and Brendon Joyce saw her as a Harrower replacement ..... and she’s been ok, but struggles against taller international opponents

Just caught up with this morning's Atlanta @ Chicago game and gee it was really not pretty for Shyla. Her D got thoroughly abused, she got her shot blocked, some poor turnovers, a defensive 3 second, and 2 of her 3 assists were extremely generous interpretations by the score bench.
On the positive side, she looked solid enough with the ball in her hands, and Coach Wade clearly has patience and a long term view of things because he gave her way more court time than most coaches would under the circumstances. Even gave her some minutes at the 2 spot alongside CVS. She didn't get time in the 4th quarter though.

No hate btw. Just observations. I really hope she makes it, and am keen to gauge how she is going to be able to find a niche for herself to stay in the league. Size & quickness were the obvious concerns going in, and I think the size factor can be overstated at times. Defense is going to need some serious work because what she is up against now is a major level up from what the WNBL was able to throw at her, and quick players are going to target her.

I think maybe in 4 years she'll be an ok backup. Wnba expansion of 2 teams looks likely so that helps her. What doesn’t is all the international guards that opted out this season.

She's one of the PG’s in the mix for future opals along with Rocci, Mangakahia and Wallace. Atm, no one else is close. Nobody knows who will replace the current 4 who are near the end of opals tenure.

Mitchell is crap atm and already should have retired from opals. 20% on the season shooting.
Ebzery is 31 and has max 3 years left, so too Madgen.
Lavey at 28 is not a future starter either and with aflw starting earlier, she’ll have to make a choice soon.

Heal is still one of our very best PG prospects. I think she has proven that irrespective of what Hammer has claimed.

Landing in Chicago was good and it was also bad. Absolutely great in terms of opportunity to play immediately, but the downside is that Chicago will have a good roster once everyone is back from injuries and 3x3 qualifiers. Then the pressure is going to be on to start winning games. Vandersloot is a key piece, but is also on the older side and can't be forced to log massive minutes. So if Heal can't at least become a steady backup she might find herself in the very rare situation of being a top 10 draft pick who gets cut before the end of their first season.

If last nights game was anything to go by, she's a long long way off

Looked very Slow and sluggish ,, not like Brisbane has any star guards to challenge her, but they did ... 8 turn overs!, and thats being kind as they missed at least 3 others , can’t say she’s been out as she’s just come from a college season straight into WNBA camp and preseason , shot at 25% FG

Lots of hype comes from college ball, but often found wanting once out of that environment.

Commentators and club are doing their best to continue the hype with the "focus on the positive (13 points) and ignore the negative (8+ to)

Be interesting to see how she travels in this league

has anyone actually taken a step back and had a real deep think about why Whitcomb has not been selected ahead of others? Maybe she is just not a great team mate or really high maintenance. Maybe Sandy can only deal with one of these types of players in the team and she already has Cambage. Forget her talent, being a team first team mate is a big thing when you spend weeks at a time with each other.

Thanks for clearing that up. I've never heard 'troll’ used as a positive. I think what you’ve described would usually be called clever, wiley, sneaky, etc. in any case, I agree with you that she’s messing with opponents heads and having a great season this far.

Troll was probably a poor choice of word, but yeah I meant it to have a positive connotation as well.
I know that in college she was public enemy #1 with a lot of opposition fans. (Maybe #2 ... I think Sophie Cunningham was probably #1). But she is tough and is starting to have some real impact in games. Right in the conversation for most improved.

I also think Bird fouled on that last Dallas drive in OT and received a 'goat' free pass. Dallas should have walked away with that W as awesome as Lloyds buzzer beater was.

She's played for dandenong 18/19, Bendigo 17/18, Perth 15/16 or do you have to be in country for 4 years continious or a permanent resident.

How handy would she be though given our shooting guard situation going forward. Still just 27.yo.

2024 Paris olympics - outs Mitchell 39, Ohea 37, Whitcomb 36, Griffin 36, George 35, Tolo 35, possibly Madgen 34, ebzery 34.

New team...

PG? 3 of... options
5'6 Heal 23, 5’6 Rocci 26, 5’11 Wallace 28, 5’6 Reid 28, 5’6 Mangakahia 29, 5’8 Lavey 31
SG 6’0 Laney 31 / 5’11 Nicholson 31
SF 6’2 Talbot 30 / 6’2 Blicavs 31
PF 6’2 Allen 32 / 6’4 Magbegor 25 / 6’4 Smith 28

Luuuc, you agree on the opals lineup, cutting Mitchell, moving George to c?

George aside (give me Cambage or Magbegor at the 5 over her any day) I like it as a smallball option that can create some chaos defensively and put points on the board in a hurry, with Ezi + Liz as a more traditional front court option when needed.

My worry in general with the Opals, regardless of Sami being snubbed, is that our depth drops off quickly. Not even that much in ability, but in aggressiveness/proactivity. We need a productive bench in a compressed tournament like this (potentially 4 games in 6 days at the business end if we are good enough).
I mean Sami, Bec & Steph aren't doing anything in the WNBA right now that they weren't already capable of - it's just opportunity, mindset, and having the trust of their teams. I want to see more of that in the green & gold rather than just revolving around Liz. Allen has already taken that step, and I think Talbot will do so in Tokyo too. But she just makes up for the loss (since the World Cup) of Sami from the team. We need more.

Her bench is pretty bad. Heck some of her starters are pretty bad too (Nurse has been quite the disappointment this season other than fluking that game-winner).
To me the problem is her good players underperforming. Turner & Vaughn were both excellent last season, but this years she's getting nothing out of them. Griner back in the middle makes a big difference (just like Liz does in Vegas) but they surely should have adjusted by now.
I also don't get what's happening with Alanna Smith. Yes she has been unimpressive, but to get literally zero minutes last game was weird to me in a team desperate for extra contributions (especially when Brondello is just about to put her Opals cap on and will need to get something out of her). Yes her main attribute seems to be quick cheap fouls, but she's also capable of hitting shots so at least give her a few minutes to see how the game flows with her out there.

"I was in a place where I was like, 'I'm exhausted, I can't give anyone anything.' Thinking about coming back here after the Olympics, I was just overwhelmed.
