ILL v PER Mar 7

Perth were pipped by the Bullets last game, and they hate losing as much as Philippe from Paddington loves Mardi Gras, and wasn't he gorjus last night!
Illawarra fell into a mid season slump, until Adelaide bedazzled them letting them get a win. Pre-season, the games were close, but regular season is when the gloves come off. It's 2 v 3 and it's hard to see either team rising too high over the other, but the one parading around after the game should be the Cats.

Cotton looked a bit banged up at the end of last game against the Bullets. His heavy workload and tight schedule maybe just taking the edge off his dominance. He is very durable though considering his relatively light frame, the attention he gets and the effort he puts in at both ends of the court. If he is not close to 100% it might just tip the balance toward the Hawks.

Sam Froling is seven foot in heals opinion, nba bound, there will be no one left in nbl if believe these guys. Sam would 7'10" standing on his brother laying down, so 6’11” at best.

I didn't even think our D was that bad. Bullets were just excellent, and rebounding numbers are always going to look worse when the other team is hitting everything they throw up. Perth did really well just to hang in that match.

Hawks have been insipid today.

Adele and Deng are like turn stiles defensively, coaches are working out how to stop Harvey and Jesup and while Ogilvy and Froling are having a go there ain't much else there.

. Mooney is the best 5 in the comp, Cotton is the best guard in the comp and Gleeson is equal or better than any coach in the comp. Gleeson gets players like Blanchfield better, Wagstaff always solid, Norton now playing great since he’s starting. Every one just does what is required.

Perth get an other import, shut the gate.

Probably not in Goorj's best interests to argue that as 2 fouls. Would only mean no Jervis and more Mooney.

Adel paid more than 300K as a marquee. Might be the most overpaid player at this point in the history of the league. Just a streetballer who plays zero D. NBA player my ass.

What happened to "Cotton stopper" ?
Him not being able to shoot hurts Illawarra offense and it's really starting to show in the NBL Cup

It would be interesting to see who royally f'ed up by signing him. It feels like something the n00b owners would do, continuing the trend of dud ownership there. I'd be shocked if Goorjian was fooled.

Not even close.

David Andersen in his first year at United after being lured back from Europe was supposedly on $500K+. Import DJ Kennedy is his lone season at United was sais to be on $750K+ too.

So if there are no secrets who exactly is to blame for being suckered in by the Adel myth - the ownership or Goorjian? One of the worst decisions in modern NBL history, somehow Ed Smith's BS is still bearing fruit.

Deng adel isn't an Ed Smith kid.

But it was well known in Vic after he played more than 2 seasons in the same age group that there were some question marks about his actual age.
Why you will find a lot of the guys who have question marks over age careers fall off a cliff or never take off as expected. Instead of coming into their prime , they are actually on the downward part.
Countless examples over the years, once college finishes, or even before that, get stagnant and the hype quickly disappears.

It makes no sense at all. He had a decent sophomore and junior year at college, bounced around the G League with decent output, is obviously struggling to adapt to the NBL, so the only logical conclusion is that because he allegedly lied about his age, he's actually over the hill and in the decline on his career? I've never heard so much rubbish in my life.

That age thing doesn't seem a likely explanation. Is it more so hype and acting on limited data? (e.g., Exum.) Or biting on the "played in NBA" info without a bit more due diligence? There have been a lot of solid prospects who didn't carry through for one reason or another - one dimensional, headless chicken, poor chemistry, etc. Plus it's possible he hasn't fit Goorjian's plans well?

Reply #836107 | Report this post

In the g league, certainly in the past it was all about scoring, no D, passing or team play, it's a lot easier to look good scoring at will on no defence. Re the age thing, it does make a bit sense but very hard to get a true gage if it’s true.

Hawks are a team put together at the last minute due to the changing of ownership.

If they win about 50% of their games that will be a big achievement for the year.

The small market clubs like the Hawks and Cairns will struggle at stages due to the lack of population in those areas.
