Social Basketball - provide an umpire or be 'removed'

Just interested to know if anyone else who plays social basketball at a BSA run venue is surprised/shocked/bemused that all social teams will need to 'nominate a person to referee 1 game each week, around your game time if required'.

Whilst it's certainly an unique and outside the box idea, surely that suggestion will go down like a lead balloon and/or result in a mass exit from these competitions?

Does anyone else play and ideas so to their next steps?

So they don't want to pay for umpires anymore? Or have trained umpires?

Back when I played in a small regional town in QLD it was common practice to provide a ref and score bench person for the game before or after. If you didn't provide one, your team was fined with the money going to whoever did the reffing or scoring.

Refs got their fees reduced every game they did so they were paid in a way to do it.

Basketball SA plan to have all teams to do a game before or after their game to lessen solo games plus teams have to nominate
a referee then that basketball SA doesn't have to pay them .They say remove from comp won’t happen it’s all fake .
Since Covid many referees have left ,not many good refs left and basketball sa not making effort to develop next generation of refs .
B prepared social teams might as well umpire their own games ,no need experience, then don’t need an uic who only gets paid to
sit in the office all night chatting on messenger.Another basketball ide to save money..

Happens regularly in social comps in WA. Usually you are on a roster once a month to have one player be available the timeslot before or after your game to ref (and be paid) if needed. Makes sense since there isn't a surplus of suitable/experienced refs around wanting to spend their weeknights be abused by D-Grade flogs in NBA jerseys

What I hate is when they transfer you to one of the dirt courts.

Is there a mass shortage of refs in District at the moment as BSA haven't scheduled games for all teams this Saturday. U12s play, some u10 but no u14.
I see a lot of games at the lights with 2 green shirts reffing at same time.

I believe the future looks good for basketball SA ,(financially) social will be refereed by fill~ins and district will refereed by parents .
They will save money ,no uic no refs to pay possibly no doorkeepers .
All basketball SA need to do is contact teams to have ref available for their following weeks ref.
This is happening in country basketball now .

@568

Curious what social ball in WA does this.

I've played at a chunk of venues (Wanneroo, Craigie, Warwick, Perry lakes, Lords) and never had to provide a ref.

Refs get abused, spat at, even heard of physical violence.
BasketballSA dont care, all they care about is taking your money.
No refs means cheaper games right? since they dont have to pay the 15-20 bucks?

Anyone that organises community sport understands the challenges of developing, maintaining and recruiting referees.

Current BSA staff have given up. Service to grassroots is almost non existent.
