A point of clarification regarding the 17% increase:

Good sign, can start competing with the big boys when it hits 2 mill and restrict poaching from overseas.

Good start but clubs like Barcelona, etc, have around $60 million it's still away to go.

Can clubs legally have a local marquee player (including Asian players) AND an import outside of the cap or do they need to choose one or the other?
Also does the next star have to fit in there?

Olgun has tweeted that a team spent double the cap this year, but it wasn't United. Any educated guesses?

Perth. Cotton was on over $1M on his lonesome this season, and they were paying tax on every other contract they had.

Would've been budgeted for him becoming a marquee mid-way through the season, but that obviously didn't eventuate, so their spend would have been huge.

You can't have an import outside of the cap under any circumstances, regardless of whether you have marquee players or not.

Does this make Perth's injuries a kind of karma for going so far over the cap?

Did Perth know about Cotton's citizenship situation when they signed Magnay?

Cotton was on 650k+. Don't think it was 1 mill. It was 2 millover 3 seasons.

Korean league has reduced salary by half.
China has no imports next season.

Expect alot of imports from Korea or China here or in the Japanese league.

How troubling is Japan/Korea for the NBL?

Seems like they're on the rise and could potentially splash a whole lot more than NBL clubs will for players.

What kind of salary cap do they have or salaries are they paying for a guy like Kay for instance?

Not Korea. BUt yes nbl and b league are in a battle.

B league have the money and lots of opportunity, 3 tiers
Nbl is better for potential to nba and obviously English speaking.

B league top tier up to 400-1 mill for imports.
Here it's like 400-650

"Perth. Cotton was on over $1M on his lonesome this season, and they were paying tax on every other contract they had."

What's your source for Cotton being on $1m? The West Australian said it was $2m over 3 years when the signing was announced, which is around $0.67m per year if we assume it was spread evenly.

Even if you did assign $1m to Cotton, not sure where the other $2m is being paid to.

The cats roster hardly screamed out of in-demand players they would've had to pay up for, with the exception of Magnay and he only played a small component of the season.

Jervis, White, Bairstow: not sure they would've had offers from any other team, so assume they're on the minimum or thereabouts

Wani: was on a deal from a couple of seasons ago as a teenager, doubt it would be a big money deal?

Norton: was in the last year of a deal signed 3 years ago as a backup

Steindl: possibly on decent money as it was reported his services were hotly in demand when he was last a free agent

Blanchfield: might be on a solid pay check but don't think he was particularly in demand this past off season

Mooney: was a highly rated college player but generally first year pros out of college don't break the bank. I remember Nick Marvin saying it was often cheaper to get rookie imports than signing locals.

Magnay: would've been in demand and with a high price tag, but only played a small part of the season

To be honest it felt like a bit of a budget roster coming into the season, hence the predictions many were making about missing the playoffs

I haven't seen any numbers, but as above I remain unconvinced Perth was spending big, even knowing that Cotton was on a large salary.

Melbourne may have still spent big themselves, but they were able to take advantage of Australian marquee players like Landale and Goulding (McCarron?) not fully counting against the cap. Also baba not counting against the cap because of Asian player rule

That team would probably be SEM

Creek 500+

Sykes Euroleague guard

Broekhoff signed late Feb

Wetzell would've been in demand

Gliddon would be on decent $$

Pineau top 5 NBL rebounds and blocked shots and had just signed contract extension

Moore another decent import played for Galatasaray last year

Gibbo, Adnam experienced NBL role players

Their owners are loaded from memory

Agree that South East Melbourne would be my educated guess as the big spending team. I reckon Sydney would've spent a decent amount too when you factor in ware was the highest paid import in the league in 19/20, jarell Martin was a high level import and cooks is presumably expensive too

Yep, the rumour was Cooks signed a back ended deal. Spurned his Dad's Hawks and signed in Sydney, taking a smaller salary for the remainder of 19/20 but a huge salary in 20/21.

Ware and Cooks would've been on well over $1mil combined I reckon.

Ware 600-700 and Cooks 400+.

Say 1.1m, that's like 75% of this year's salary cap. Although Cooks would've been marquee so is it 150k that counts against the cap for tax purposes?

You have to remember the pay cuts. If Cotton was netting 650k, that's 1.3M against the cap.

Eh? $650k was the "full value", not 50%.

Here's what we know, for sure, no whispers or rumours or know-a-guy-who-knows-a-guy:

1. Lachy Reid stated Cotton was making $600k a year on commentary during a game. Not sure which year, but it would have been before the hub.
2. Cotton opted out and only came back after having the chance to renegotiate his contract.
3. Liam Santamaria said on Overtime that Cotton was taking up the entire salary cap.

I think we can safely assume Cotton didn't renegotiate his contract to make exactly what he would have made anyway, so we know he was netting more than the $300k he would've got off his base $600k, even assuming no raises since Reid's comment.

Given that him netting approximately the same amount as prior years - in the $600k ballpark - also leads his contract's value to be in the same vicinity as the soft cap, as per Santamaria's comment, that seems the most plausible conclusion.

"I think we can safely assume Cotton didn't renegotiate his contract to make exactly what he would have made anyway" - fair comment

"so we know he was netting more than the $300k he would've got off his base $600k," - what does this mean

"Given that him netting approximately the same amount as prior years - in the $600k ballpark - also leads his contract's value to be in the same vicinity as the soft cap," - not sure I really understand this but maybe the explanation to the second quoted comment might help

He was on $600k pre-COVID.

Under the COVID paycuts, that means he nets $300k.

It's safe to assume his contract is thus worth significantly more than $600k.

If his contract was worth $1.2M, he'd be netting the same $600k he would've got pre-COVID.

The salary cap was approximately $1.2M.

Santamaria said he was taking up the entire salary cap.

Therefore, it's reasonable to assume he was actually taking home close to $600k, rather than only 50% of $600k.

Cotton was on $600K per season.

COVID came along which meant a 50% pay cut on all existing contracts, so he would only make $300K.

So Cotton renegotiates a new deal to earn $600K nett which is $1.2mil on the books against the salary cap to keep earning what he did before.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. So Cotton wasn't necessarily taking home $1.2 million this year, but that was the size of his deal that applied to the salary cap because the Cats could only give him 50% of his contracted number.
