Harry Wessels Signs with Saint Marys

Wessels becomes the 22nd Aussie to suit up for the Gaels since 2001. It's a bit of a stereotype at this point, but I’m not sure there is a better option for Aussie players going the college route.

18/21 graduated university.

18/21 played or play high level professional basketball - 15 in the NBL and 3 in the NBA. 2 had career ending injuries that prevented a professional career but were likely NBL grade.

3/5 of Boomers starting 5 were SMC alum (Delly hardly in form these days but still a legend).

What is Wessels ceiling in university and beyond?

Really is something that works so well for both SMC and Australia.

Didn't realise the success rate was that good. Who are the guys that didn't make it?

You can Click through to the different seasons since 2009 but before that you had:

Patrick Mills
Lucas Walker
Ben Allen
Carlin Hughes

If my memory is correct: Adam Caporn, Dan Kickert, Patty Mills, Carlin Hughes, Lucas Walker, Ben Allen, Clint Steindl, Delly, Mitch Young, Jorden Page, Matt Hodgson, Emmett Naar, Dane Pineau, Kyle Clark, Jock Landale, Tanner Krebs, Jordan Hunter, Jock Perry, Alex Mudronja, Kyle Bowen, Alex Ducas and now Harry Wessels have suited up for the Gaels since 2001 in roughly that order.

Mills left early to go the NBA. Mudronja left after completing his freshman season to pursue NBL opportunities. Jorden Page left after a nasty knee injury before his senior year.

I believe all of the above played in the NBL (or NBA) with the exception of Carlin Hughes, Jorden Page (career ending injury), and Kyle Clark (career ending injury). All 3 of those guys were very good hoopers at SMC though.

Self audit: Bowen and Ducas are still at SMC so have not yet played professionally. They both seem NBL caliber to me.

There was a recent news article featuring Page. He said he regretted going to the same school as Dellavedova. He was a very nice guard for SMC, but kind of got lost in the shuffle of Mickey McConnell, Dellavedova, and Steven Holt whilst also suffering serious injuries. He just had the misfortune of being on a ridiculously stacked college team when it came to the caliber of guards on the roster and recurring knee injuries. He clearly had the talent to be a great NCAA guard and probably a starting caliber NBL player.
