Pau Gasol Retires

41 year old Pau Gasol has decided to retire after playing for Spain at the Tokyo Olympics and playing for FC Barcelona last season.

What a great career the older of the Gasol brothers had. I thought he looked a very good player early in his NBA career with the Grizzlies but never thought he would develop the steely resolve and toughness he displayed after the trade to the Lakers (which included the rights to younger brother Marc being traded to Memphis).

Pau went on to win back-to-back championships at the Lakers essentially saving Kobe from himself by salvaging his reputation. Even Phil Jackson thought Kobe was too far gone. An incredible effort really.

On the international stage with Spain he won a gold medal at the 2006 WC, silver medals at the 2008 & 2012 Olympic Games and a bronze at the 2016 Olympics.

A very fine career and an ornament of the game. Younger brother Marc's NBA career appears to have come to an end now too although it's expected he will play on this season back in Spain.

Yes he won a gold medal but he didn't actually play against Greece in 2006 as he was injured. They beat Greece by 23 so he wasn't really needed as they were cooked after playing with the hand of God v USA in the Semi. But Pau indeed was a generational player.
