Bullets v Breakers

Finally some NBL action!

What's everyone’s thoughts on todays game?

Will the Breakers finally break their duck, or will the 'no weakness’ Bullets get back over .500?

Breakers have had two weeks off, Bullets three - will be see a high quality game or a slugfest as the teams shake off the rust?

Breakers first half specialists, Bullets second.... Given the extended break and it’s really too hard to tell who’ll come out on top!

Praying for Gaze, Copes and JC on commentary!

Peyton Siva is back for NZ and Rob Loe is out and Geremy McKay is in as an injury replacement for him.
Tom Abercrombie is expected to return in 7 weeks from his foot injury.

Now this is novel an NBL game, what a treat!

Siva is back? I thought it was meant to be a 6-8 week injury?

What would people prefer for all games - a standard 'national' commentary crew for 10 peach games (ala TNT/ESPN), the current mismatch of commentators (different ones each games/week provide no continuity) or a ‘local’ crew specific for the ‘home team’.

I.e.
Adelaide - Brett Maher & a caller (John Casey etc)
Melbourne- Andrew Gaze & caller

I know it’s really hard with the pandemic and the centralised broadcast model, but there’s certainly room to improve the overall presentation (regards of who’s in commentary).

Where’s the NBL jingle - ala ESPN/TNT, correct graphics, better stats (I.e. not just the main ones) etc

Dumb foul by Harrison got Brisbane n trouble with him spending to much time on the bench. Nz doing well at present.

Man it is good to have some NBL to watch again.
Buzzas playing well below capability so far. I'd be good with NZ breaking the duck today.
I'm liking the unis.

Did someone promise the Breakers they could steal all the alcohol they wanted from Nissan if they won?

Why are they playing winning basketball?

Yes Brisbane played like an under 10s team but doesn't help when the refs give NZ every single 50/50 call.

Obviously they wanted NZ to win and it had nothing to do with Brisbane coughing the ball up every other possession

Brisbane offensively were poor, to many players of the same type, Salt was going great and should have got more time. NZ deserved there win, the two import guards were great, loved the small ball rotation at the end with Wetzel in the five.

It's almost as though not playing for a couple of weeks while a severe respiratory illness runs through your team is subpar preparation for an athletic contest.

The difference for the Breakers was Siva. He brought some defensive intensity getting being active, reading the plays, and disrupting Brisbanes offence. It got infectious and all of a sudden even Besson forced a travel and Dieng was trying to get rebounds. It's a tough road for the Breakers to be consistently competitive, let alone make the playoffs, but that was a solid win for them against a good team and they have plenty of upside. The extended break has been good for them and they should aim to win 1 game at a time and get close to .500. That would be a positive outcome for this season.

Something I’d like to know is was Walsh doing what Rucker claimed: telling Shamir players to sub in and sub out? It sounded like the rest of the commentary crew didn’t believe it. Anyone at the game see it?

My guess is that it's factually correct but Rucker painted it differently than it went down.

Good to watch some basketball, have to say. Also good to see the Breakers pick up a W.

The difference for the Breakers was Siva.

First game Siva was fully healthy and Breakers win unsurprisingly.

There were some classic comments on here recently about Siva such as he wasn't worth the hype by the league or why would you not cut him as he's injured.

Breakers social media is full of comments from arm chair coaches calling for Siva to be replaced because he didn't drop 30 points lol. Even people saying he should be on the bench for Besson, have to explain that one is a PG and the other a SG and their roles are different.

Been very happy with Bullets progress this season.

BUT, what's with Isaiah Moss? and why have the Bullets not even looked at an injury replacement. NZ lose Siva for a 'few' weeks and get a stud, Chasson Randle to replace him temporarily. Siva is back, Randle is/was available, would he have not been a (very) useful stand-in (and even permanent replacement)? And if not, what about Jeremy Kendall? Not the best guard in the world but better than one who can't play at all! He's here, he knows the NBL, great basketball IQ, and currently available. Other teams have done similar. Bullets, no replacement, not even contemplating one it seems. And we still don't know when or if Moss will ever contribute.

Thrilled with Salt's impact last night (v NZ), Hope that that was his break-out game and that he continues in this vein. In fact, he and Harrison had a very efficient and useful 7 from 8 FGs between them. Get Liu firing and that will become a formidable front line. No, not the most frightening or dominant but with Franks, Patterson and Sobey doing the heavy work, they (the C's) will be more than adequate.
And, I have to give Cadee credit for 2 of the best assists I have seen for a long time. Both pin-point passes under the bucket for lay-ups.

Fix the Moss situation (short- or long-term) and Brisbane can genuinely be considered as a contender.

Congrats to the Breakers and Wetzell on their 1st W for the season. Well deserved, should have happened sooner.

Salt can be a really solid player in this league. Just needs to regain his confidence.

Randle isn't available. He’s still contracted to the Breakers. It looks like they’re keeping him around in case Siva gets injured again or Martin / Besson go down.

Moss, on the other hand, WTF. You're right Kendle could at least contribute something. He showed last year with the Breakers as well that, if he’s a local, he can contribute in the NBL.

Bullets haven't considered signing an injury replacement for Moss as they're the biggest tightwads in the league. No secret.

Not sure that's the reason. They may be, "the biggest tightwads in the league", but isn't this sort of thing covered by insurance? Either the injured player's costs (wages, medicals etc) or the replacement player's costs?

Anyone out there, a Bullet's member perhaps or even some-one who understands social media speak, know more? Please post!

Teams do not get magically reimbursed by any insurance to cover the replacement costs of another player re injury.

Thanks. How about the injured player, Moss? Wouldn't the club have to provide cover for him as a member of their roster?

That's what DP's like Big Liu and Mackinnon are for to cover for players on the roster who are unavailable.

WC will pay a lot toward the injured players salary unless they have gone against that model.

Zodiac, I don't really think that that's the role of DPs. You're saying that if an injured superstar is N/A, we have a DP to replace him.

And obviously, injury replacements are in fact, DP replacements where the DP is required to replace the injured stud.

Good strategy, that!

[I know what you mean, Zodiac, but it reads funny.]
